I was an instrumental music major in college, but I hadn't touched a trumpet for over 50 years, so when I tried to play my new trumpet, I was squeaking and squawking worse than a flock of geese. I actually bought a mute so I wouldn't scare the neighbors. So I put the horn down and just practiced buzzing the mouthpiece for 20 or 30 minutes a day for two weeks. When I put it back in the trumpet, believe it or not, I actually sounded like a pretty good beginner player.😊 🎺

Excellent video. Very didactic. I've been learning to play the trumpet for 2 years and my teacher gave me some of these instructions for the exercise routine and I can say, it works very well. Nowadays I play lighter, although I need to improve more and more. I will follow these instructions step by step. thank you for this magnificent class. From São Paulo, Brazil.

Hi Eddie, 40-year budding comeback player. Totally agree that my musical knowledge is FAR superior now than when I was at my "peak" playing in HS. If only I cared more and listened more then! Regarding the exercise pyramid, to clarify, with each exercise how much investment of time per day? For example, with the blowing air stage is it 10 minutes per day? 20 min per day? 10 min in the AM, 10 in the PM? Thank you!

I answered this in the live stream Q and A today. Here's the link:

If that doesn't answer your question, then just let me know and I will try to add more detail.

Thank you for the detailed answer! Unless I misunderstand your video reply this was with the context that one has already advanced thru the pyramid phases, past blowing, lip buzzing, MP buzzing and so on and now is incorporating the pyramid exercises into their daily 1 hour practice time? My question is strictly with regard to starting each phase from the beginning. So with the blowing exercise for example at this point I’m not even instructed to touch the horn yet (I’m not yet “practicing”). In that case, how much time would I devote to blowing for the (up to) 2 week phase? 1-3 min per day 1x per day? 1-3 min 4x/day? Does this then apply to buzzing phase, and so on? Thanks.

What should I be looking for when blowing in the reverse of the mouthpiece? Is it intended to increase core strength and air delivery? I haven't played in over 40 years.

According to my method, the main focus on the air exercises is to create a steady airstream. It doesn’t need to be loud or overly long. Just steady. No pressure fluctuations. This steady airstream is what leads to beautiful music.
