It would be difficult to overstate Alan Wilder's contribution to DM achieving the sustained global popularity that perhaps only 20 other artists in modern music history have reached. There is nothing on A Broken Frame that even hints at Martin being inclined, let alone capable, of making a record like Construction Time Again. Without the pivot to an industrial soundscape-along with the production prowess and work ethic that Alan brought to Construction Time Again-we don't get Black Celebration, Masses, or Violator. And those four records are the reason we are still talking about DM today.
I would have loved to see what Wilder and Marr could have brought to the table.

I would drink this man’s bath water. Breathtakingly beautiful, Martin too. Their wives are lucky, lucky women. They exude something so primal, so powerfully magnetic. Words don’t do it justice.
“ I don’t like Paul McCartney without the Beatles.” I wonder, did he say this on purpose? Was he being very subtle and sophisticated here by saying this? Is it his way of saying, I didn’t like Depeche Mode without Alan Wilder? Or was it his way of saying, I don’t like Alan Wilder without Depeche Mode? He always seemed to be the most careful and most intelligent of all the 4 of them in interviews. I do believe he had the most education amongst them all. He was the only one among them who was classically trained. He was definitely the most sophisticated among the 4 of them. The rest of the band give very simple answers ( they were raised in a smaller town - Alan was raised in London) in interviews , but Alan delves into musical history of different bands and genres. I personally think Martin and Fletch were intimidated by his talent and intelligence. Dave not so much.
Dave has always seemed so sensible. It really makes one wonder how much he went through during the devotional tour and the few years after. He mentions here it was this repetitive monotony that led to a misplaced focus, but I have to wonder if it had to have been more than that. Perhaps it was simply the drug use? The drugs? It’s difficult to believe drugs can do that to someone so sensible, but I guess it can, especially if under a lot of stress. He also says he was very unhappy at that time. I think long term fans could see that change in him then. Its wonderful that it seems like there’s been a return of Dave, the real Dave. He looks fantastic, at ease and happy here. I hope that has continued for him. I like how in recent footage (momento mori concerts) he seems much more interactive with the audiences at concerts and caring, welcoming even. (This interview is 14 years old when I’m writing this) He looks like he is enjoying it and much more relaxed with his job and more connecting with the people who come to see them. Whatever hell he has been through his recovery and honesty about it is truly beautiful. I’m sure it can reflect very positively on those struggling with similar issues. So cool. ♥
They are by far the greatest band I’ve ever seen live. When I saw them for the first time I had so much respect for this band. They’re the most influential band to so many other artists you wouldn’t even believe. You can’t even find another band to compare to them. They write all there own music and produce all there own music. They are musical geniuses. If you don’t have an ear for Depeche Mode you don’t have an ear for music. Plain and simple.
The feeling you get is touching and full of joy.I feel happiness in the energy with the music. Everyone in the band have a special place. Dave have an amazing voice. Martin too. All in the band becomes a fantastic combination of incredible good music. And give so much joy and positive energy in a fantastic way which is hard to de describe. ❤❤❤❤️🔥❤❤❤
I absolutely have to disagree with some of the individuals talking on here - Recoil WAS very successful, there were a lot of people who went to the concerts, there would never be as many as Depeche Mode, but that’s how it is, DM play stadiums, to compare their success to Recoil is very unfair. The Recoil concerts were not nothing, just because the same amount of people didn’t like them as DM. The Recoil concerts were packed with people, I wish I could have seen them in concert, they looked fantastic. I love Recoil, fantastic electronic music, Depeche Mode don’t even play synthesisers anymore, they play guitars and drums (and not great, in my opinion).
Man, that Barrel of a Gun question was AWKWARD. It was ballsy of the interviewer to do this because of the uncomfortable nature, but it really did push Alan to comment on the rigidity of Mode now.
I like the Alan Wilder DM era, but when he says Barrel of a Gun is too drum machine stiff, I really can't understand. DM has been using drum machines and stuff since the early days, only changing this trademark on SOFAD. I think Alan was trying to underrate the song because in Ultra DM proved they still could kick ass even without him. But good interview nonetheless.
I miss this man so much. It breaks my heart that he's retired and we'll likely never see or hear from him ever again. I never thought he'd return to DM permanently, but that Albert Hall thing in 2010 (and other events around that time) made it seem like they were getting on better and there was the hope of other collaborations/one-offs. It was like they were in a good place, but something happened: Alan's auction is the most obvious, but I've also heard that there were payment issues surrounding Alan's remix of 'In Chains' before then. I don't know. In any case, it's so sad how Alan has disappeared and become a taboo topic. (Dave used to talk fondly of him, so to see Dave's hostile reaction to a mention of Alan during the latest press tour really took me aback.) I find it so sad that we'll never see Alan with Martin and Dave again - even just for one evening. I wouldn't expect a tour (though I'd love that) or even a full concert. I just wish we could have one final chance to see them together performing a set or one of their classics (like ETS) to provide some much-needed _positive_ closure. But it's clear that even that's too much to ask for. 😔

His personality keeps bringing me back to listen to this interview. I was an on again off again fan I guess busy raising a family in the 90's. Now that they are grown I got them to take me to the 2023 tour, twice. Somewhere someone talked about a recent recording of Alan's , I bought it. A very integral part of DM and a very talented man. I can only imagine being a part of a band, that has to be a massive amount of empathy and also the balance of individuality and camaraderie to give and take to create music.
Why Alan left Depeche Mode... It's a long story. I recommend you watch the documentary "We were going to live together and it was going to be wonderful" about the making of Songs of Faith and Devotion. It's on TH-cam. Also a documentary on Ultra called "Oh well, that's the end of the band" provides some interesting insight. I've watched both of them countless times but still I don't fully comprehend how this could happen.
