Astonishingly brilliant and articulate artist. Grayson Perry is an excellent example of a man who know exactly what he is doing. He completely swept me off my feet. I am so impressed with his thoughts and often digressive comic answers. I think he is a genius.
HOLY SHIT... Grayson Perry is the greatest artist of the 21st century..."Secret"... He knows about the media, and he knows how to play at it... But he really know alot about art... So he is AWESOME... Period.
I think he is a great speaker and pretty much on the money as a cultural critic. He has the benefit of being inside the art world and has the rare ability to articulate succinct thoughts clearly - as well as make art - which makes many art journalists and critics seem rather pompous and clueless. The only one of his assertions I think is distorted by the gloss of his own color-tint filter is this notion that pretty much anything decent will be recognised by the institution, because they carefully comb over every borough for the gold. I do not live in England, I live in Australia but I cant imagine this is true anywhere. There is certainly great stuff at the top of the pile, and there is not so great stuff at the top of the pile, and there is great stuff that is ignored by the gleaners for a multitude of reasons. I have seen the best art students disappear from the scene time and time again and let the bureaucratic foot-soldier artists of the institution march into the temple. Aside from this I think he is thoroughly insightful.
Too bad this interview was done by Decca, her reputation as reputable is forever gone (if it ever existed in the first place). Guardian, if you're that desperate for interviewers check Upwork. My company uses it all the time.
Always enjoy listening to him as he says more about art in five minutes than the Guardian does in a year. But did he really utter the following two sentences in quick succession? That's a very terrible sweeping bitter generalisation. I'm English and the defining characteristic of an English person is that you're in a permanent state of social dis-ease. He doesn't usually deal in the cliches of received wisdom let alone those that have an affinity with the worst types of social prejudice.
The sound quality on this video is rubbish so I gave up. I like Grayson Perry, he is NORMAL and down to earth and calls a spade a spade, saying that dressing as a woman is his sexual fantasy... I can respect that because he is honest... and thank God doesn't want us to call him a woman.
@Marianne Havisham Grayson's daughter Flo would siagree with you there. ''Dad being a transvestite doesn’t really affect my life. Yeah, he stands out, but so do people with massive moles on their noses - he’s just slightly more pleasing to look at.''
Interesting interview, but the interviewer is doing my head in with her constant coughing!!!! What is wrong with her, no "excuse me" or anything... awful.
How has this man been knighted , this world is falling apart , what a great advocate for the youth when people like this get knighted countries laughing stock of the world
ok, so imagine this guy getting out of the shower, not saying anything just standing there naked next to his "art". would there be anything and i mean anything at all that didn't scream FAKE.
True art should aim to remove the artist from the equation. Grayson Perry is a self serving self publicist disguised as a champion of the people while raking in millions of pounds. He is no more than a Big Brother contestant in a dress; look at me and how interesting I am compared to you in your dull life. That's not art that's masturbation in public for self gain. When did the artist become a celebrity and more more important than their work? could it be when celebrity is worth more than gold..mmmm
That is a feeling you have because you are confused and uncomfortable with his appearance. These can be the only reasons you'd begrudge his success and, by eliciting it publicly from you, he has in effect 'arted' you- you were hurt by your own prejudice, he'd be happy with that.
Grayson Perry has actually addressed your presumption before: “In the art world there is a snobbery which suggests that the artist is meant to be a shadowy figure in the background behind the work. That kind of high-integrity marketing strategy is very common. Whether people call it a marketing strategy or integrity is another matter. The monk-artist is an attractive archetype in a world where there are only so many - the belligerent drunk, the batty dame, the flaming tortured soul. It’s a big part of the attraction of art - the work is a relic of the artist/saint/holy fool. People want to touch the cloth or whatever. It’s part of the religion.”

Love everything this artist has to say. He is completely refreshing in his honesty.
This is the most AWESOMEEST artists that talks about art... AWESOME.
The defining quality that always comes across is Perry's intelligence

Decca is so insensitive she just seems like a cruel twisted woman when comes to real subjects after her tragic loss you’d think she would be kinder.
You're being extremely charitable towards her
Check out her hit piece on Jordan Peterson in the Sunday Times. She is a nasty piece of work.

I am loving Grayson Perry
he is amazing
he's so much fun to listen to/to look at
Great guy!.. for an artist, yeah! How awesome of him to pay college fashion students for his dresses!! wow A+
absolutely amazing
Grayson Perry is a really interesting person. I find his art inspiring and it shows what a bunch of fakes a lot of people in the art world are.

He looks in a style somewhat looking like an American actress but th styl of "dress" is somewhat like a meadevil or Renaissance tunic.
Every interviewer makes a point of mentioning his clothing. Who cares? Get on with it.
Thomas Lomax why does it bother you so much?
I'm a starving genius from Manchester.
Love the vid xxx
Who was the personal artist he mentioned around 26mins in?
Great!

Cross dressing, yet quite manly and very ingenious

The first time she apologised for coughing, which she's done at least three times, couldn't she go to Boots?

It's the GUARDIAN? What are you expecting different??? I'm sure she has a cold. Anyone can get a cold but.............

Perhaps he should change his alto ego's name from Clare to Rose (Without-Trace).
Liberal Guardian journalists eh? She's uptight about the whole interview...

I’ll ask him what I like.
No, disagree.
The power of art to shock shakes people out of complacency. Eg: Picasso, "Guernica", and Chick Corea's composition of the same name,
He perpetuates the idea of the artist as sheltered basket case.

Who are you to define what "true art" is?
He likes to dress up as a 4 year old girl you fucwits, bet you lot loved Jimmy savell because he did a lot for charity, until the reveal
