As a skinny-ish 20 year old with a lot of stress about the future trying to gain muscle mass, this is such a rough disease to have. I've just kind of figured out what I can't take and so far it's no spicy foods, basically no dairy except small amount of lactose free milk and yogurt for protein shakes, and foods that are low in fat and sugar. Diet mainly consists of chicken/fish, eggs, rice, peanut butter and assorted bread with fruit and vegetable juices (Since both fruit and veggies in this form has little to no fiber in it and is easier to digest). It's basically a lot calories though carbs and protein to try to gain weight. Stress is another huge thing that triggers flares for me but it's obviously easier said than done to not be stressed. Everybody is different so none of my experiences may help but it's not the end of the world and it's honestly given me an appreciation for feeling normal instead of inflamed as well as the experience of tracking what I eat / what dieting is. Good luck to anybody reading this! :D

I have a UC diagnosis and I disagree with some of the advice given here. Small, frequent meals would guarantee that my bowels would never rest and mean more bathroom visits not fewer, especially if those meals included dairy. I eat a whole foods plant based diet and the fibre is beneficial because it feeds the microbiome that keeps my guts healthy. We know that animal foods are pro inflammatory and plant foods are anti inflammatory so I rely on beans, chickpeas and legumes for protein. I have been in remission for over nine years and only require a low dose non steroidal anti inflammatory medication daily.

I JUST beat my insulin resistance and after 30 years of trying to get into a normal weight range you're telling me that what actually brought my breakthrough, namely intermittent fasting and a diet high in animal fats is bad for my UC? God damn it, all I want to do is have a body that is up to everyday life but it seems that's just plain asking too much.

I'm surprised such advice would come from Stanford. If dairy bothers you, why keep eating it frequently and not eliminating it...
Many small meals a day can bother some with UC. If your small intestine doesn't digest lactose well then it travels to the large intestine. Your body may see this as a foreign body and attack it, along with your large intestine causing inflammation. You can eat anything you want? No, no, no. Another example of keeping people just sick enough to have to rely on medicine instead of a natural approach. Do your research and do not rely on just one video for your nutrition advice. There is better out there.

I think it’s important to have a low fiber diet during a flare, but to include more fiber during remission.
More plants and fewer animals is the rule I think.
I think that small amounts of meat and dairy can always be better than larger amounts because they’re often very hard to process. I would like to see more research into a two beta casein dairy, which is often better tolerated for people with digestive issues.
Also, dairy products that are lower in lactose can be beneficial.

Their products are gentle on the stomach and have provided relief without the harsh side effects I experienced with conventional medications. I've always followed a healthy diet and never touched alcohol or tobacco in my life. I used to work out on regular basis. I was 24 when I started to experience frequent flatulence. I thought it'd pass but it never did, I also started experiencing sour throat a year later. Last year I came to know about gluten sensitivity which after avoiding(wheat related food) minimized the sour throat. After undergoing endoscopy this year they informed me about intestinal ulcers. No one in my family history experienced something like this... I'm 27 currently and don't know what would happen to me in future.

I’ve been in remission 2 months. I did 1 month red meat only with water butter and salt. 2nd month I added fruit smoothies mainly berries only with bananas; sandwiches I eat sourdough bread with steak, lettuce, avocado and bacon.
I added white rice with turmeric. Sweet potatoes with no skin. Half a gallon of water a day . Also when I make my smoothies I use banana milk. Tho I’m currently looking for a local rancher to use raw milk. I also eat eggs made with butter . I eat tilapia fish. I don’t eat chicken , for some reason it messes with my colitis . I know everyone is different but I essentially follow the carnivore diet and added carbs and fruits . Hope this helps a bit . Going on month 3 of remission. I’m finally able to mma train, weightlift and go out with my girlfriend without worrying about pain, bleeding, or loose stool
