I've been looking at the europa. Nice video. I'm divided between the pure Elise and the Evora. This sits in between but the rarity is definitely enticing. The engine option is also not something we are used to in Malaysia.. decision decision
Coming from lightweight sports cars as daily drivers (Smart Roadster, MX-5), on paper this seemed like the perfect car for me: mid-engined, more performance, turbocharged (I like power that's available early enough), prestigious badge and rare... I wanted it so badly it went to the point I got in touch with the local Lotus club to get to meet the nearest owner of a Europa... After a 2+ hour drive I finally got there and he showed me his SE. And what a disappointment that was! Barely easier to get in/out of than an Elise, hardly any storage space at all, smaller boot than my MX-5, and on top of that he mentioned several reliability issues... So I understood why so few were sold: it's a great concept, yes, but a terrible execution thereof. I'd go as far as to say it's just a bad car, plain and simple. And its abysmal market reception indicates many thought the same. Definitely not a daily driver, as you rightfully pointed out... And it's such a pity because, done right, it could have been awesome... Hopefully the Wells Vertige got it right...I just hope some will be available in LHD !
I completely disagree with you. I have never had an issue with this car and drive it almost daily. It is in my opinion so much more exciting than most of its rivals and a very nice and responsive drive. What did not help sales back in the day is the fact that potential buyers who wanted something a bit easier to live with than it's stable mates were waiting for the announced Lotus Esprit II which unfortunately never came. The price point of the Europa S/SE was also too steep to lure many customers away from an Audi TT, BMW Z or Porsche Cayman.

Great video. Looking at her today she will be desirable as time comes with only 408 in the world and a unique concept its something.
One of the best looking Lotus... Too bad it wasn't a very good GT car. You could say it was a first try at the GT market.
The way you describe it, and the fact it has a turbo, makes it sound like more of a slightly cheaper alternative to an Alfa 4C.
Such a shame this car was ignore at the time. Nowadays people would gobble this type of car up rapidly

Its a shame that they didnt sold enough of this car to give it a facelift, the proton lekir concept imo look quite better
Truly underrated
