through a grommet is always the preferred way but starting in about the early 2000's year by year it seems harder and harder to find a grommet that is actually accessible on both sides of the firewall and there are some cars like Audi's that you can't even find a spot on the firewall to access for installing your own grommet....
Having that problem right now and can't find anyone that's solved it yet... There's a total of 2-3 2nd gen Equinoxes on TH-cam, the only one that even comes close to showing where they got the power wire through the firewall is a ghetto ass install and you can't make anything out on the video anyway... Been digging in my dash for 8 hours looking for a spot I can get a 0gauge wire through..going to just say F it and borrow a buddy's lift to run it under the car in conduit.
Good video, I'm trying to install power wires for a mobile ham radio through the firewall. Problem is the harness comes with two huge fuse holders and might have to make the hole larger than what I thought was practical.
Thanks for showing the grommet tool, I was in the planning phase of a project and that idea will come in handy. I'll experiment by making one out of metal or rigid plastic tubing.
1:34 is what i needed to know i think. I have the same big wire harness grommet next to the clutch pedal on the inside. But in the engine compartment that part of the firewall is hidden by the fusebox. So i have to unbolt the fusebox, hopefully i can see the other side of this grommet then 😀
Me being new to this is it bad to puncture the wire wall but I like that I don't have to drill any holes to run wiring like I have seen in other videos
My first car had the wire in the door jam. It worked fine but ever since my second car in 2017, I've always cut a hole in the main boot that feeds the fat wiring harness through the firewall.
im installing a whole ass 3 sub 4 mids 2 amps sound system TOMORROW and it'll be the first time i do the job on a modern car(2017) and i came here in panic mode because during a quick inspection i couldnt find any single hole in the firewall which my 1992 truck has plenty of to make it super easy. i'll be working without that grommet tool, but man that thing looks handy to be able to put the wire through like that. i need to find space for a run of 4 gauge and 8 gauge, hopefully not too difficult
Never even knew such a tool existed lol I always used the small slit with a razor blade on each side and some fish tape... And don’t you dare shame me for grounding my amp to the trunk latch in a future video 😂😂
Looking to install a space heater into my car and want to run wires from my battery inside.. this video saved me as I didn't have any idea how to get wires in there. Now I do
I also, like HifiVega, had no idea that there was such a tool as the "grommet tool"...I like it, and I like this vid...AND, the guy who made it! Z-BOP!
What about doing 8 runs to the back because I'm doing my first big build and I planned on doing 8 runs to the back and have no idea where to have the wires go any help would be greatly appreciated thanks
ShowtimeSPL thank you very much and I've been a longtime subscriber always loved your videos how you show the tech side of things with good information keep it up 👍🏽👍🏽
I didn't it in the door jam of my Altima but I put it through this little hole behind the panel and behind the hinge. It was really tight and never got snagged. Also you need fuse at the batter to avoid it catching fire in the case of a short
Very informative .. I am doing a power wire install for my mobile ham radio. Never heard of or seen a Grommet tool. Your video just have me Hope. No lol. Very cool indeed.
Love the video. I bought the same tool and got my 4 gauge wire through. Although I'm worried about water getting inside the cabin through the firewall when it rains. Is that something to watch out for? Should I try and tape up the grommet or silicone spray it?
Ford engineers: where should we run the wiring harness through? What if we made it really easy. You know like through the fender and into the door jam. Kyle.. your getting a raise.
The only way with the tools that I do have that I could run my amp wire in my 2000 dodge grand caravan was behind the window wiper motor which does come through my door jam on the inside and his under the bottom trim.
Guilty of the door jam run... I didn't want to do that for my wife's car. Thanks for the video. I'm doing it right this time! I'll fix my truck in spring when it's warmer out.
As much as I love that you are showing how to do things the right way, I feel that if you can use the wire poke jobby you can use a uni bit and make your own hole and use a dedicated grommet, that way if something does melt it's not welding your ecm harness....just easier to stay out of trouble then to get out of trouble 😉✌️....and I do have mad respect for what you do, don't let my opinion stop your viewers from doing what you show, I have seen thousands of " self installed" items as a mechanic for twenty plus years and I've seen what happens when full batt amperage is applied to all of the crkts at the same time going through a bulk head ....💥💨♨️⚡🔥🔥🚒
Running 0 awg is such a pain getting through stock rubber grommets. Almost always have to find a good safe place in the firewall to drill and install a new grommet.
Yeh that My Brothers Auto Elect DIY, I'm sure Temporary that's generally Permanent, He wired in # gauges and I had a Smoke/Fire in the Car, Had to Disconnect Battery To Fix Problem temp then went home and fixed it to a better standard.
Okay - so here's a dumb question: once I have the wires through, how do I attach loose wires to the battery? There's no clips or anything to hold it in...
You get some copper ends for the wire that you crimp on and then you run the bolt of the battery through that so it has to be the right size copper connector. They're basically a flat end with a big hole in the middle made of copper.
I used MASSIVE AUDIO BT HEADPHONES and the bass came thrue clean & boomin but i got dog barks all 5.1 from the background sounds....lol but this was very good editorial!
What do you mean? How is "in a pinch" applicable to getting a subwoofer playing? It's not a necessity, it's not a dire situation with drastic circumstances. In a pinch applies to if you're stuck on the side of the road, or doing s temporary rigging of something due to not having enough money saved for a mechanical repair. You do something in a pinch, to get you surviving (getting to work, having readily available transportation in case of medical emergency, etc) getting an amp playing is not a "in a pinch" moment. We always have time to go back and fix it later, but never enough time to do it right the first time....
That tool! This video is worth it just for knowing that tool exists! When I think of all the times I could of used one...
Years later... just ordered the tool I never knew exists. LOL
The door lock as the ground got me😂

currently having this problem, 2006 mountaineer. there's a grommet but it's almost completely inaccessible from the inside
Good video, I'm trying to install power wires for a mobile ham radio through the firewall. Problem is the harness comes with two huge fuse holders and might have to make the hole larger than what I thought was practical.
You're fighting the good fight Ed; keep it up.
I haven't seen someone run a power wire through the door jamb before...was thinking about doing it too! Thank you for the video.

You and I have the same pet peeve’s for the “I know it all crew” 😂🤣😂😂😂
Wow..I have learned a lesson....I am cb radio hobbyist and I use to run the wire through the door jam..lol...now I know what to do now
Hi man which side the hole in ford focus 2008
My first car had the wire in the door jam. It worked fine but ever since my second car in 2017, I've always cut a hole in the main boot that feeds the fat wiring harness through the firewall.
How would you go about running wires from the cab back to the trunk? I’m installing a trailer brake controller
LMAO that ground to the door latch wow.
great video, thank you
I remember some kids in HS would "install" a stereo, and they would not hide any wires at all. Car-b-cue anyone?
im installing a whole ass 3 sub 4 mids 2 amps sound system TOMORROW and it'll be the first time i do the job on a modern car(2017) and i came here in panic mode because during a quick inspection i couldnt find any single hole in the firewall which my 1992 truck has plenty of to make it super easy. i'll be working without that grommet tool, but man that thing looks handy to be able to put the wire through like that. i need to find space for a run of 4 gauge and 8 gauge, hopefully not too difficult
Thank you for this video I never knew that gromit tool existed I just purchased one.
Never even knew such a tool existed lol I always used the small slit with a razor blade on each side and some fish tape... And don’t you dare shame me for grounding my amp to the trunk latch in a future video 😂😂
😂
i just made the tool is a stiff plastic tube, now i can install my rivera horn
I thought BigD was gonna roll up for a second xD
Went on Amazon and bought this piercing tool with the quickness!
Looking to install a space heater into my car and want to run wires from my battery inside.. this video saved me as I didn't have any idea how to get wires in there. Now I do
Where would be a good spot to feed the power cable on my 09 civic ?
Haha this video took me back to my teen years ,loved it 👍
I also, like HifiVega, had no idea that there was such a tool as the "grommet tool"...I like it, and I like this vid...AND, the guy who made it! Z-BOP!
Thanks - great idea - looks like that grummet puncher tool is a scredriver (hollow shaft) cut off at angle?
I've never seen a hollow screwdriver. Not have I ever heard of one.
What about doing 8 runs to the back because I'm doing my first big build and I planned on doing 8 runs to the back and have no idea where to have the wires go any help would be greatly appreciated thanks
I'll have to cover that with my HHR. Drilled holes and mounted large grommets
Get someone to weld you some channels under the car to hold those runs. Or just mount pvc pipes under the car if you are on a budget
ShowtimeSPL thank you very much and I've been a longtime subscriber always loved your videos how you show the tech side of things with good information keep it up 👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks a bunch. Needed to run a temp battery wire for my tow hitch wiring and thought my only option was to run undercarriage but now I have options.
What's the grommet tool you used?? It looks like the punch that comes with the kits. But can't find just the punch.
I once had a custumer pulled in with the Amp mounted in the Engine Conpartment!, lol.
Hey, how was your Birthday?
Whaaaaat? That's crazy man
What’s the instrumental you was playing in the beginning??🔥
Love the video. I bought the same tool and got my 4 gauge wire through. Although I'm worried about water getting inside the cabin through the firewall when it rains. Is that something to watch out for? Should I try and tape up the grommet or silicone spray it?
The rubber grommet usually closes around the wire. Also, most engine bays are setup as to not allow water to flow onto the firewall.
Where did you find the tool? I’ve looked and I’m not able to find it.
can you help me run the cables in a patriot jeep for a subwoofer please
That amps ground location is crazy
Ford engineers: where should we run the wiring harness through? What if we made it really easy. You know like through the fender and into the door jam. Kyle.. your getting a raise.
Hi, I need some help, trying to do this except my firewall doesn’t have any rubber grommets, it’s this plastic material, any advice)
You'd have to drill a hole. Be sure to check multiple times and start with a small pilot hole to check clearance
I’ve done that 😂. I got 0 gage but can’t see anywhere to put it through. I’m thinking about going underneath
Thats how I had my sound system back when I was 18
till one day I almost catch on fire 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Can we attach parallel front camera wire to fog lights so that no extra switch needed ?
grommit tool...why haven't I heard of this before? That's awesome!
Thank for showing the wire grommet tool!!!
The only way with the tools that I do have that I could run my amp wire in my 2000 dodge grand caravan was behind the window wiper motor which does come through my door jam on the inside and his under the bottom trim.
I couldn't figure out how to any other way.b
Guilty of the door jam run... I didn't want to do that for my wife's car. Thanks for the video. I'm doing it right this time! I'll fix my truck in spring when it's warmer out.
Great video and the door latch as the ground was to funny 🤣😂
I got a seat Leon mk 2 I need the wire to go through the wall anyone know where the grommet is Francis
For some reason, I don't think you really heard that Scion from very far away... Certainly not from anything powered by 8ga cable.
Also the trashfire job on the speakerwire off the amp. Looks like a broom head pinched in there.
Man...I forgot all about that tool. Haven't seen one of those in a long time.
I was looking for a way to reroute a vacuum line and this helps me out a lot as well as future reference for some extras I may be looking at next.
Thanks!!!!!!!!! I didn't know that tool existed.
What a cool tool. Never seen one,,,its a "must have" now that I seen it !! Lol. TY Bro ! Great video ! 😎✌️
Thanks for this! This helped a lot! Didn’t know the tool existed.
Love the introduction 😂
Do u know wheres the grommet firewalll for the 2002 kia optima?
Awesome video! I don’t know how many times I’ve had a car in the shop and seen the same thing.
Running 0 awg is such a pain getting through stock rubber grommets. Almost always have to find a good safe place in the firewall to drill and install a new grommet.
how about a nissan almera how to do it
Yeh that My Brothers Auto Elect DIY, I'm sure Temporary that's generally Permanent, He wired in # gauges and I had a Smoke/Fire in the Car, Had to Disconnect Battery To Fix Problem temp then went home and fixed it to a better standard.
Ty! Took me an hr to give in and look on youtube for some help 😅🤦🏼♂️
So it has to go from small gauge wire to a what size gauge wire? Is this mandatory?
Where you get that grommet tool? I can remember at least 3 different times where that tool would of been handy..
I put an amazon link in the description
@@SparkedEd awesome!!
Lol I laughed damn near the whole video. Good knowledge to share. Thanks.
Pa plates, bro! You get the like! Nicely done! 👍🏻
Okay - so here's a dumb question: once I have the wires through, how do I attach loose wires to the battery? There's no clips or anything to hold it in...

You are the man bro 😍 no more wire-through-the-door-jamb for this guy 💪
Where did you get the grommet tool?
Good idea for 25 years old car 👌
What is the tool used actually called?
Grommet tool
Wasn’t ready for the scion 😂😂😂
Thank you for the tutorial. I plan on doing this for a La Cucaracha horn lol
This is a great video!
Great video bro!
Useful video, but wish you left the music out. It took away some of the enjoyment.
The tool comes under wire loom threading kit 👍🏻
I wish I could upvote more than once this helped me immensely
Thanks for this! Very useful
Name of first song please!!
A to the O, a stock TH-cam song from the creator library
What song was in the beginning?
Just some stock audio from the TH-cam library. A to the O
Thank you!! This was so useful!
That's funny, I ran my power wire like that for my first install. But at least it was fused at the battery.
Really did like the video 🤘🇬🇧from England !
To YOU it sounds nice. To ME … it sounds like a drive-by approaching 😂😂
0gauge thru mitsubishi endeavor?
Idk the poke thiggy exist🤣 ive been using old hollow spatula handle to poke the rubber gromet..lol
What's the pokey thing call. I need one. Thanks
Dude thank you so much,
You're welcome!
Can that tool work with 0awg?
Great grommet tool. never thot it out,,I will make one out tubing etc ,
That's hilarious. But when in a pinch you have to do what you need to do!! Lol
What do you mean?

What’s that tool u used
That's awesome.. you are so genius and funny 😁. Thank you sir a lot. Wishing all the best to you.!
Thank you for the video!
I used beer caps, cigarette pack foil to replace burnt fuses in my first 8track days,, later fog lights,, later no headlights, wtf?
Where do you buy that tool!? I need one!
Lazy ass, ever hear of google.
Or do you need the validation?
Check the description.
Subscribed for the ground wire wrapped around the door anchor
Man that firewall was very nice mine is packed with all kinds of crap under there.
The intro though 🤣
Excellent!!! Didnt know they made a tool like that! Thanks :-)
