This is great! I, literally, just ordered the Manny Ortiz Beauty Dish after going back and forth between it and the Joel Grimes 24" version. I can see myself getting the Joel Grimes sometime in the future.
I used the Joel Grimes for a long time before I got the Manny Ortiz. I still love the Grimes dish, but the Ortiz is probably my favorite modifier of all time now.
Personally I would send it back and get the Glow ParaSnap as is provides the same quality of light but the set up times are 500 x faster. Lets say you have a main light and a rim light setup, with the Manny its 5 full minutes per softbox, thats 10 minutes setting up. with the parasnap its literally 10 seconds. 5 seconds per softbox. I am not joking, check it out. Plus moving from one location to another is far easier.
@@TheSunnySuttons thanks for the feedback! However, I think you might be confused about the modifier…the Manny Ortiz, as well as all the modifiers in the Westcott Rapid Box series, pops right out very similar to an umbrella (without the rod). It takes just a few seconds from the time you take it out of the case to fully assemble it. I looked up the Glow Para Snap you mentioned as I was unfamiliar with it, and it looks like it might include another step to fold out the speed ring. Even if that’s not the case, it’s not really possible to beat the set up time of the Ortiz. Thanks again for watching and giving feedback!
thank you for quick reply. You’re awesome and love your work. I recently purchased Fj 400 and can’t get the pictures to come out like yours. Trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong. I’m using canon r3. Please help.
Forgot to mention in my previous comment that I am glad to see that someone else uses the same collapsible stool I do. Certainly saves my arthritic knees.
Hi Matt love your videos thanks for sharing. I have a question, could you do the same shots using a 300W Studio Strobe and would you get the same or similar images? Mark from Australia👍
It would be similar but you wouldnt be able to underexpose as much given the lower power. It would be close though! Thanks for watching and the feedback!
Your video are really good learning tools. Question: Looking at how close the light with the zoom modifier was to the subject, given that this particular modifier can generates a lot of light, why did you set the light to full power? And was the final image shot at full power? Thanks
No worries! Thanks for putting out such great content. Just found your channel and now I'm cranking thru all your videos! I'm looking to get into the kind of work you're doing after years of shooting with natural light
I did a video on that actually! Here it is if you want to check it out. Thanks for watching! Gear You Need To Get Started th-cam.com/video/HAzRSTBRui4/w-d-xo.html
Honestly it depends on the situation. If I had to pick only one, I’d go with the Ortiz. No, the shadows don’t bother me, but they are tricky to deal with sometimes!
Another great video Matt. Thanks so much. Side note: being from Miami, seeing a Hispanic person talking with a Texas accent really messes with my head. 😂😂
@@MattHernandez I saw that PolarPro baseplate on your camera and having watched a few of your other videos, I just assumed you were using a ND filter to darken the background. I just ordered one of PolarPro's ND filters to play around with. Great videos ! You have developed amazing skills. Thank You for sharing.
I know you’re not asking me but personally I look at daylight, cloudy, and auto and pick whichever looks best at the time. Knowing I can change it in Lightroom later relieves the anxiety of that choice though. 😂
@@MattHernandez another video that I would love to see is how you handle white balance on a partially cloudy day - where the sun keeps popping out. It seems like as soon as you get the white balance set, the sun goes behind a cloud, or vise versa.
Using the sun as a rim light gives a harsh shadow fall off from light to dark so using a small modifier like the 9" long throw reflector as a main light which also gives off harsh shadow fall off makes the most sense to me. Having harsh shadow constast from the sun and a soft shadow modifier as a main light just looks a bit off in my opinion especially for sportraits. thanks for doing the conparison. 👍 As you shoot a lot of location work, i would highly recommend you invest in Adorama Glow ParaSnap range as is provides the same quality of light as the Manny but the set up times are 500 x faster. Lets say you have a main light and a rim light setup, with the Manny its a 5 full minute per softbox, that's a 10 minute set up time which isnt long but every day it becomes a chore especially when its not neccessary. With the parasnap its literally 10 seconds. 5 seconds per softbox. I am not joking, check it out. Plus moving from one location to another is far easier.
Just to clairify to viewers not all Beauty Dishes are the same. The Molas, for example, render very different than your regular cheap or soft beauty dish.
Different for sure bits hard to beat the collapsible westcott beauty dishes though. Even though they’re are all three called a beauty Dish, they really are pretty different.

Very cool to see the different results - thanks Matt!
Glad you liked it!
This is a great series of videos. Thanks for helping us out.
Absolutely my pleasure!
Interesting to see these results - great content Matt!
I thought so too! Thanks James!
Thanks, Matt, for the content! Helps out tremendously!
You're very welcome!
Hi. What color setting is your camera set at?
I think it was on 5700k, but I usually set a custom white balance. I'll do a video on that soon!

@wescott get this man a silver beauty dish already!
Great idea! 🤣🤣🤣

Have you tried using the MagMod grids/diffusers? Just curious...
No I haven’t I’m sorry.

Great Video!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Did you try the beauty dishes and octa l without the diffusion fabric?
Yes I do that all time! It helps get a little more power but you get a distinct shadow from the quick falloff.
Of the modifiers you talked about ... what would you start off with (i.e. what would be the first one you would purchase to get started?)
I did a video on that actually! Here it is if you want to check it out. Thanks for watching!

Hahahahaha I bet it does! I was born in Texas, but raised in KY 😂 Thanks for watching and your feedback!
Maybe I've missed this in a different video, wondering why you perfer to use HSS when shooting a static subject?
1, I didn’t have my ND and 2, it’s faster to do that and I needed to get off the field because they had a game!
I do use both. Just depends.
Ah, thanks. And thanks for the vid. Need to run out and get me one of those deep reflectors.
