      They should also standardize laptop power adapters and batteries. I'm a repair tech and it's a pain. Also the screws that they use. All desktop computers use the same screws, why not laptops? It just makes sense.

      Laptops are at least going in the right direction. Many new models already charge with the usb-c port. As for the batteries, that is probably not going to happen anytime soon as the designs are so different from model to model.

    I have you all beat when it comes to yard equipment. You see, I have a retired neighbor with a riding mower and a wife with a great ass. As soon as I hear him mowing his yard, I send her out to work on the 40 feet of flower beds she insists on having, and my lawn gets mowed as well - as if by magic. I haven't mowed my lawn in 3 years.

    I’ve got a fleet of these at the movie theater I work for, the custodians use them to blow out all the crap from the rows that accumulates at the end of the day. I’ve had a few units for over 2 years now and both units and batteries still work great, these get charge cycled at least twice a day. Battery life is total crap if you use that turbo button but on the smooth floors we have it’s perfect to use them at low to mid power. Batteries last around 30 to 45 minutes on those settings, and when it’s dead just grab another, by the time that new battery is dead the other one should be done charging, charge time is relatively fast. I know that company has bigger batteries but I’ve always stuck with the “small” ones that come with the leaf blower. They are a bit bulky but not having to deal with extension cords anymore is a good trade. With how much use our units get every day we are pretty impressed with them so far.

      I have the hedge trimmer, chainsaw, and blower. I also have a stihl battery power pruner that I now use instead of the stihl gas powered power pruner that I have had for years. Doubt I will ever use the gas model again the battery powerd pruner is that much superior, the battery last probably the equivalent of three tanks of gas.
      I am happy with the blower (newer model) as I am the rest. These are much quieter and since I use them in Multifamily environment it is much appreciated. I still am hanging on to my little wonder and BR 600 but they are heavy and heavy duty. Don't always need a sledge hammer to drive a finish nail.

      Wal-Mart has recently changed their security policy. They posted a yellow vested "security guard" at the entrances checking all receipts as people leave. Well not all, it seems to be whenever something isn't bagged; e.g. electronics too large for a bag or you're a youth looking suspicious etc. I really doubt they would try to do anything if you said "no thanks" even with these changes since they resulted from an "undercover" security guard killing a guy in the parking lot after he walked out with a cart full of DVDs. While detaining him, he suffocated; three people were charged with mans-laughter and Wal-Mart issued the yellow vests. Happened in Lakeland Florida if I remember correctly.

      Walmart lots security footage of common theft nowadays. They wait until the get a substantial enough amount of cash and figure out exactly who you are and then just hand footage to local law enforcement. Mainly because the teenager that stole $50 worth of stuff isn't enough to get police to go arrest someone if they aren't already there.

    The Power settings are quite useful if you want to use this kind of tool for other applications. For example, I used similar products to sort out leaves and twigs from blueberries and lingonberries by sending them through a pipe with opposing air stream, cathing and removing the debris. If it's not adjustable in that case, I would have to re-pick the berries from the neighbors lawn, and he's well over a quarter mile away.

    Wait, that waxy phase-change stuff might be for temperature. When the cells heat up, they melt the wax, but while its melting the wax, the temperature of the wax is constant. The latent heat of fusion needs to be put into the wax before the temperature can rise more. It's like ice in water always being 0C when the ice is melting, but this is at a higher temp. Cody Don did a neat video about this phase change having more energy when he filled a hot water bottle with paraffin wax. He showed that it contained a bit more energy than just the water because of the phase change.

      Kyle Ikeda hmm. Get a big enough one, reverse the wiring on the motor and yeah you probably could. It'd be massively impractical and huge pain but eventually you could probably get the deed done. Or get a big ducted fan and build your own blower. Though by the time you paid for all the bits you'd be better off just buying a normal blower.

      Wild guess: the wax is supposed to melt as a temperature control mechanism and the stuff whats mixed in is supposed to keep the wax crap ON the battery when its wet. The idea being that the heat of fusion of the wax will hold the temp steady while the wax is melting.
      o course, some of that heat will just go right back in the battery when the wax freezes...probly won't matter though because the batter isn't being used if its colder than the wax stuff.

    • @mglenadel
      @mglenadel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Just like they had on the lunar rover. When the wax melted, the astronauts would stop the rover, open the battery compartment lid and let the wax cool off and solidify by radiating the built-up heat away.

      +Wectum Wecker Thank you for the link. I had not heard of "Phase Change Materials for Thermal Management of Li-Ion Batteries" before but it makes a lot of sense to me. The paper concerns a major improvement by adding graphene which I assume the Samsung cells in the EGO did not have.

    • @jayls5
      @jayls5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Think of boiling water. 100% of the energy of heat is dedicated to changing the phase rather than elevating the temperature further. By circulating a cell with something that has a phase change at a temperature within the working temperature of the cell chemistry, it forces heat from internal resistance to be transferred into that material without elevating the temperature until 100% of the phase change material has converted. This, of course, it dependent on its heat capacity - but in a high drain device, this little tweak may keep the high "C" rating of a cell longer before needing to be dialed back to prevent thermal runaway.

The battery life is significantly better than he makes it out to be as well. You dont need turbo mode for blowing leaves which is what most people use it for. Its simply too much power. We generally run around 3/4 to full power for most things and turbo only when you get to a large pile of leaves. Like it or not this is about as good as it gets for an electric blower and I personally won't be going back to gas.

    I bought one of these on a sale a year or so ago at Lowe's. Love it. Performs exceptionally well. Perfect for clearing snow. You can clear the car in the morning, toss it in the car, and clear the car again to go home. Very happy with mine. The variable speed and optional turbo features are actually useful. Lowest speed around the porch and flower beds so I don't tear up the wives stuff. Then I kick the turbo in for blowing off the sidewalk after mowing the lawn. You definitely don't want it on turbo all the time. Also they do make lawnmowers and other tools that use these batteries.

  • @XxGarbSxX

    I also have one of these and came to exactly the same conclusion. I mainly use it for breaking up clumps of grass after mowing and light duty debris clearing. Tried to move leaves with it last autumn and got about 50 square feet clear before both batteries were toast 20 minutes later. I have the string trimmer from them as well, and that does a fantastic job, and can get the whole yard trimmed on a single battery most of the time. 0.6 acre for reference.

    Battery life is the whole reason for having two speeds. Like AVE says, who needs "turbo"? Only the engineer figuring the battery life. Modern flash lights piss me off for the same reason ("runs for 20 hours!"). The on switch has a high and low beam, and maybe a strobe function. I just want to turn the light on and off.
    Edit: I should have said that the turbo switch (and flash light modes) were designed by a battery engineer with a advertising guy standing over his shoulder. I can see it now, Ad guy "Wow that is powerful! How long will it run?" Enginerd, "Nine minutes." Ad guy, "How about we call that 'turbo' and slow it way down the rest of the time..."

    8 minutes. That explains why there is a potentiometer and a turbo button. Those are the only way to get "up to 75 minutes" out of the battery.
    And the "phase change" battery thingamabob is probably just for thermal management, like the batteries on the lunar rover: melting the wax robs heat from the batteries, cooling them. After some time with the motor off and no load on the batteries, they cool down, letting the wax re-solidify.

    • @BerndFelsche
      @BerndFelsche 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn'r rob the batteries of heat.
      The material has a high heat of fusion so it takes a lot more heat (Joules) to change the temperature a fraction of a degree. In essence; it stabilises the temperature of the battery at the melting point of the material; until all the material has melted.

    The difference between a blade and vane: Blades move... vanes are stationary and redirect the gas into the blade or redirect flow. Blades in a compressor (blower) transfer energy from the blade to the gas. Blades in a turbine (or turbo) transfers energy from the gas to the blade... that is, gas energy is trasfered from the gas to the blade to produce blade motion to drive a shaft to power the compressor or other device. Nothing but high tech windmills and fans.

    I own this tool as well as EGO's mower, edger and weed eater. They work really well. I have a smaller yard, but I can put the 5 AH battery in my mower, do the front/back, weed eating, edging and blowing almost all on one battery. The battery has never been a problem, I have two 5 AH batteries and 1 of the 2 AH batteries and it charges faster than they deplete. If I have to swap them out it's just a quick change. The tools are light weight and require no oil, fuel, air filters, spark plugs. They are much quieter than gas and with no fumes. My only complaint is there's no striper for the mower. The mower has a lot of nice features, folds up for storage, has thicker/nicer rails with quick release lever for folding it up and not those spinning bullshit tighteners on most mowers. Oh yeah sometimes you want non-turbo, when you're trying to blow some mulch from the drive back to the flower bed etc.. you don't want to over do it and blow mulch away from where it's supposed to be, but otherwise turbo a lot of the time.

    I work in fuel testing, maintenance, and construction. For evacuating vapor from fuel tanks we use metal venturis that are powered by an air compressor trailer. Not sure if the metal venturi being screwed into the metal bung on the tank grounds it enough to negate the static caused by the moving air but we triple wash the tanks first. Once we're done venting the tank this way, normally the lel meter is reading 0 but we throw in a certain amount of dry ice just before pulling the tank to further insure an inert atmosphere.

    ..after using these things for the last 2 1/2 years at work I can say they are pretty reliable and pretty tough. They withstand being wet and droped,throwin in and out of a truck bed and generally just handled roughly. Only complaint is that charge check button on the back. If you don't pull the battery from the charger directly and check the button it might show green but get a minute or two worth of use and it can go dead. I REALLY have to hit HIGH or wet grass to bog it down. This is with the STOCK included battery. You can but a battery that is 2-2.5x the capacity. It also weighs HALF what a regular mower does due to its plastic construction...Makes it easy to lift and move around and RUST FREE. It also charges quite fast. I was impressed enough to get the EGO hedge clippers too, also very happy with them. I have a really nice 2C trimmer, so I'll skip getting that. Considering the snow blower for my dad, whos getting up in years and this would be MUCH easier for him.

      Based on my usage, if your grass is AVERAGE thickness and DRY. You could do it in one full charge. If for some reason mine dies part way through because I didnt charge it when done last or I used it in another tool, I use the time to take a break, get a drink and 15 min later its juiced plenty to finish. I would buy it again. The NEW model is self propelled. I would expect that to lower run time UNLESS they upped the battery to compensate.

    What would it do to the price and the weight to go with 30% glass filled nylon? Sure, it would be more durable, but are they having problems with them breaking now? These are rhetorical questions, but as an owner of several EGO tools (mower, snow blower, and weed eater), so far I've been pretty happy. Sure, I wish they felt more sturdy but they do get the job done. If I had a much larger yard, or lived where I got more snow (Northern Utah) I might go with something a bit more spendy and gas-powered, but these do what I need them two. I guess another question is, "who's the target customer?"

    First, Love your channel. Been watching for years. Second wanted to add my two tits on this one. I don't see myself getting a blower (I got me a ball and chain and she chooches just fine). But I do think there is a place for this type of tool. I bought the electric mower from ego a year back, and she is a banger. Better then any gas mower I've owned, and I've own a fair few. I got a long grassed half acre. Mostly cause-in I don't mow it often enough. Electric was the way to go for me. I used to love my gas powered hand drill but I had to give that up too. Keep up the Great Videos!!

    Remember, you were running the turbo, so it will probably drain the battery faster and maybe thats why it lasted 8~ minutes

      remember 75 minutes is when you running this thing at lowest power. he just proved that numbers are just marketing crap

    I've got the lawn mower and weed whacker. For my little lawn, work great. The guy at work blows out a 1/3 acre parking lot with no problems. As you said, won't replace proper lawn tools; but, they are cleaner and a lot less hassle. (So far) Love your vids.

    Those EAS tags are 99% deterrent. (Electronic Article Surveillance) and a major pain right in the dick. It's difficult to quantify the savings of using the system as a deterrent, especially since the cost (per item) is covered completely by the manufacturer. The only cost the retailer has to eat is the initial installation of the system, and maintenance costs. Most of the maintenance is free for generally 10-15 years depending on the warranty your company negotiated. So there's really no incentive to stop using the system for the retailer, which in turn makes it impossible to tell if it's net benefit.

      kght222 Not saying you're wrong and your system for sure works (you work there and know better than me), but In my experience the tags attached to keys get knocked around, and/or left laying on registers so they end up getting demagnetized and not setting the alarm off to remind the employee not to take the keys home.

      Well put! A friend of mine opened a store here in Norway, and the cost of installation was so high for his single setup, so he went online to find a cheaper option, and he found. And China was her name. No service agreement of course, but as you say, 99% deterrent.

      I used to theft back in my hoodlum days right across the street from a police station (yes I was cocky) and I found I could take as much as I could carry and not get caught because the stores security gate things at the doors didn't actually do anything

      The homeless despot is actually not repairing them as they break. All the warranties on the systems expired. Plus they neutered their security department, it’s a free for all there.

    I have used the Ego brand push mower, weed wacker and leaf blower for 2-3 years and they have been absolutely mind blowing great. The blower in your video that you are reviewing isn't the same style I have used.

    Love your videos and take on life. In regards to static build up I find it very interesting in the winter when pushing around the shopping cart (Target carts especially), where my fingers span the plastic handle and barely touch the metal frame, I can feel constant shock pulses. Kind of like chewing on a piece of aluminum foil.

    I didn't quite follow what the problem is with the battery pack. Just that it's not part of a bigger cordless tool system?

    • @interstellarsurfer
      @interstellarsurfer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The problem is that it's too full of wank marketing and non-functional lamborghini styling. A cheap brick pack will do the job just as well.

      The limited number of tools that use the battery, along with inflated price, doesn't justify buying into the system.

    • @StevenWillmy
      @StevenWillmy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It costs more than other batteries with the same number of cells and power, and can't be used on as many other tools. The fact that it's 56V means nothing. It's just a stupick overpriced gimmick battery.

    • @toysareforboys1
      @toysareforboys1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To get the same capacity at MUCH higher current capability makes the cells cost a lot more.
