John and Vivian have owned this beastly Land Rover Discovery for several years now. Totally agree. That was what led us down the road to Discovery ownership.
A classic Range Rover is pretty damn close. Hell even a p38 looks amazing when built properly.
It's gotta be a Land Rover thing.

@@lopantolulu that paj has lockers you dingbat. Put lockers in the Land rovers and it’ll do the same thing
I have my own td5, 20 years in the family. Doctors pay unlimited repair so far. You are awesome!
These Discovery's are so cool looking, especially lifted on huge tires. Lots of windows, the ones at the roof edge in the rear are so cool.
That is exactly what first attracted me to the Discovery!

You need to tell this couple to call Trailhead 4x4 in Ohio and look into their CA legal LS engine conversion. 300 HP on 87 Octane and 100% more reliable.

Thanks! The LS swap is something I have considered. A more reliable and fuel efficient V8 would be great. Hopefully they will work all the kinks out of the conversion.

Agreed. If you are into some serious off roading then wt n cog are major concerns.. I had bare minimum on my D2 and it did pretty well. Enjoy outdoors enjoy LR

I looked and unfortunately I don't have the part number of the springs. They were purchased by the previous owner back in 2015 if I recall correctly. They are 4" lift springs with 2" spring spacers
Looks great I owned a 2003 Disco from new and drove it until the rear rusted out. Gas mileage sucks and premium gas requirement steered me to the Bronco. Cheers!

The disco 1 is the landrover to own.
The D1 definitely has less to go wrong than the D2. But the D2 has some features missing in the D1. Tough choice but glad we are keeping it in the Land Rover family.

The 6" lift was done using 4" lift springs with 2" spring spacers. I think most of the Land Rover parts suppliers carry these parts. Thanks!
That thing is a beast!! Nice job. I have a 2013 LR4 with the V8. Thinking of an overlander build but with stock tires for long distance travel.
Thanks for the kind words. The stock tires are definitely better for long distance travel which realistically is where you end doing the majority of your driving. But the oversize tires do give you the confidence to take trails you might otherwise avoid. Good luck with your build!
If you must, go with a lower ply rating all terrain tire. It's so much more comforting to have all terrains down a even simple dirt road knowing you're much better protected against flats

Thanks! The springs are Terrafirma, the radius arms are from RTE and the shocks are Bilstein model 7100.

Great to hear from another D2 owner in CA. The front bumper is a one-off made by RTE Welding and Fabrication located in New Jersey. They do lots of parts for Land Rovers.
I have always liked the land rover discovery 2 , but I onw a 2007 land rover lr3 hse, it don't matter the year when it comes to fault codes , it's a land rover. The lr3 weights more than the discovery 2, but you have solid front and rear axles which is nice for lifting the vehicle compare to lr3/lr4 air suspension, good for bigger tires now the discovery you can find them cheap but who knows what repairs is needed nice build

The company that makes the fridge is called Whynter and they also make a fitted insulating cover.

They were made by a company called Mantec who is now unfortunately out of business. The good news is there is another company called Wild 4 x 4 in the UK making them. They have a Facebook page.

Cool stuff. I got a mazda MPV 4x4 I am doing the same. Very rare vehicle, but its rock solid mechanically. Which got me wondering why Disco owners don't just do full swaps on these. Put an LS in it, lol
Good luck with your Mazda! I did think about going with a swap but it is not quite plug and play. Proper maintenance seems to go a long way to improving the reliability of the Rover drive train.
What roof rack is that?
What did you use to keep the correct geometry on the axles did you have custom brackets made ? Looking to lift my 95 D1 have the 4" coils with shocks already what else will I need to keep stock geometry ?
We have caster-corrected radius arms and dual double cardan driveshafts in addition to the extended shocks and coils. Good luck with the D1!
What brand is the snorkel? It's the best looking one I've seen even they all looked similar.

Nice rig well put together and thought out but there’s alway a but I. I see the loading points of we’re the roof rack joins into the roof guttering. Has the gutter sealant started to crack and also is the thin metal gutters starting to bend and buckle. This happened on my Nissan safari and water got in and rusted out my entire roof . What happened was the sealant which was done at the Nissan manufacturing stage cracks under roof rack loading and when you go cross country the body shell twists and warps . I had my Nissan for 30 years and had to sell it for parts because of the rust in the entire roof . So check your loads points . You might not see any the minute cracks under the brackets .water will seal into the sandwich spot welded roof pan to body .

They were made by a company called Mantec that unfortunately no longer makes them. I think another company called Wild 4x4 made them as well but I don't know if they still do. I hope you find a set!

WELL DONE!!! Makes me miss my 2002 LR Disco II (Salty, of course). How much $$ do you have invested, do you think? I've not heard of galvanizing the frame (wow, frame off - but totally the way to do it)... what else did you do when the body was off? ... 3 Amigos FOREVER!! Cheers.

Land Rover calls it Epsom Green metallic. It is a very dark green with black accents. Looks almost black in certain light. I think it is a great color for Rovers!

@@davidrangel7354When I first got it I put on new hoses and the 180 degree thermostat and have never had an issue. It now also has an aluminum radiator

Sounds like a comment from somebody who doesn't really ever off road. I think in my 15-20+ years of land rovering and overland trips everybody was 30+ with a bunch of kids..

Hi, great outfit. Did you change the propshaft/caster angle/trailing arms with the massive suspension lift? I guess, it is a V8 petrol? Mine is a Discovery 1 300TDi of 1998, model called "Trophy", that is 3 doors only, no ABS, no EDC, pure mechanical injection pump, only luxury feature is AC. Regards Heinz, Germany

@@johnh5192 Hello, I see. My 300TDi has a suspension lift (1 to 2" spacers, 2"+ coils ( sagged to 1", I guess). TD5 prop ( double cardan)on the front, and HD, wide angle prop at the rear. Which brand are your castor corrected front-arms ?

I have modified my Disco Baby in a similar way. 6" lift, adjustable long shocks, the Boge Self Levelling unit from Range Rover Classic (brilliant thing!) Double cardan shafts front and rear, uprated brakes (important with bigger tyres and extra weight. I'd suggest 18" wheels to fit the biggest brakes you can add) 9° caster correction plus adjusted rear axle angle. Adjustable Panhard Rod, strengthened chassis, larger oil coolers, 4.75 diffs...on and on. It does drive nicely albeit a bit low geared for long highway drives.

Hi Calvin. The previous owner had them custom made by Lucky 8 off road. Unfortunately I don't have any of the specs other than that they are 16". I wish I knew the width and offset!

Is the engine the original Land Rover engine or did you do a swap?
No swap although I have thought about it. It has a rebuilt 4.6 with top hat liners and a Crane cam.
Jesus that's a nice disco. If they didn't do a lot themselves, they have got to have north of 50k in it, for a vehicle that's worth like 5k stock.
What do you reckon they’ve got into it if it were all DIY?
@@shouldigetit I have a D2 myself so I know just keeping it running can be pretty expensive, even doing most of it myself. Let's see, assuming it was a pretty nice truck to begin with let's bump it up to 10k (5k if shabbier that you fix up yourself for another k or two), the tent is 5k, the roof rack with all the bells and whistles easily 3k (1k if you build it yourself), the interior probably another 5k (1k if DYI), just the wheels and tires 3k easily, 5k for the lift (2k if DIY), the frame galvanization probably like 5k at least if you have it done somewhere (1-2k if DIY and you don't own a zinc plating plant), lockers 3k (1k if DIY), bumpers, sliders, tire carrier 5k (1k if DIY), 5k to make the electricals and mechanicals reliable (1k if DIY) and another 2k just in assorted toys, that power box and fridge ain't cheap. I'm probably forgetting something, but that would take it up to 51k, or 26k if DYI. Maybe I'm way off base either up or down, but having custom stuff made is expensive, and having someone pick apart a rusty disco to galvanize the frame, open up diffs and practically rebuild the suspension aint cheap, not to mention dealing with the V8's (Td5 here) various issues... Phenomenal truck, either way.
I do most of it myself out of necessity since none of the local shops have clicked with me. I have way too much(both money and time) into this truck but it is a labor of love (which occasionally turns to hate). It would definitely be too painful to add up the total invested!
@@johnh5192 Yeah I know the feeling, all too well. If I paid myself even ten bucks per hour for labor then I would be bankrupt. They are excellent trucks, great to drive, will outperform _as stock_ pretty much anything but an 80 or 60-series cruiser offroad, and actually built to do so - fuel lines, electrics, everything you shouldn't scrape is high up out of the way, you're not breaking it by driving it. But then it rains and water finds itself through the windshield into the fuse box or BCU and you'll spend weeks chasing electrical gremlins. Infuriating.
@@ihmesekoilua The gremlins are enough to drive you crazy. That combined with the time and money invested makes me question my sanity at times. But I can't imagine getting rid of it.
If u have the funds drop in a tdi 300 diesel and front / rear lockers
It already has front and rear air lockers. Unfortunately it wouldn't pass the emissions test with a diesel.

What does a build like this cost?
The previous owners did some the work and I don't have those records. I have never added up my costs because it will be a crazy amount. I know it is way too much!
@@johnh5192 good to know. A guy down the street wants to sell me his disco for $3k but it has 200K miles. I figure it could either be a throw away car after a couple of years or a ridiculous money pit. I’m on the fence.
@@eddyperez3543 Even the higher mileage Discos seem to be getting more expensive. If it is in decent shape without a rusty chassis or major engine issues, 3K isn't bad. Engine replacement or chassis repair can get expensive quickly. Then if you getting bitten by the mod bug (like me) it can get out of hand. But is has been fun. Good luck!

That is not a series 2, a series 2 land rover is from the 50s-60s
It's already a true 4 wheel drive..Dif lockers make it a 4wheel drive thay just lock up diffs 🤦🏻♂️

We have many friends with Jeeps who we off road with. The comment she made was just a joke directed at them. We would obviously help anyone who was stuck and needed help. I agree it doesn't matter what kind of vehicle you drive.
