When i was a kid, about 60 yrs ago, we had a toy made of heavey cardboard with a bald man's face drawn on it with a similar material in it and had a clear plastic cover of it. It also came with a small magnet wand that you used to move the filings around to give him hair, a beard or mustache. Hadn't thought abour that for a long time. Thanks for the memories and for being such an awsome family. Also Rose, love your cast iron, but I don't have near that much. They are the best cookware EVER. Much appreciation from N.W. IOWA

*Makes me want to go dig up our garden...but im not sure how much black sand I'd find here in south east london. My landlord/housemate...did find a small gold ring some years ago. The museum of london had it for a while and when he got it back it came with paperwork stating it was Roman in origin. So it had been in the ground for some 1500yrs. Back when London was Londinium. A roman lady lost her ring in these parts. For it to be found many centries later. Rob*

Great video and the whole adventure was outstanding. I live in San Diego, Ca so I don’t get to tramp around in the snow but I do have a shop magnet. I put a thick zip lock bag over the man-gent part and ran it over the dirt in the back yard. In my area I would guess the housing area has quick a bit of fill dirt but you can still find lots of black sand... and you don’t even need to real dig. Thanks for sharing and have a great 2021!

Not seeing the hill, I'm not sure, but I think you are up where the big continental glacier was? So it might be a drumlin. But because there's water worn (river) rocks, I'd guess that it's either on an old river bed, or when the glacier was receding, the outflow of all the melting ice formed river courses, and made water worn rocks. So all the rules of prospecting a stream would apply, ie look for biggest rocks, where heavies fall, pay streaks, etc. Just thinking out loud. But whenever I see river cobbles, I get interested.

I cut a finger on my left hand on a big exhaust fan years ago.
The fan blade was bent and trashed.
The doctor wondered out loud how in the world I didn’t lose it.
Took several stitches to knit it together.
It was numb on the end afterwards.
    It took time…maybe two years.
But the feeling in it returned.
I don’t even notice the difference in it now.

We vacationed at Lake Michigan when I was a kid... either on the Indiana or Michigan shores. I always brought a magnet with me when I prowled around in the dunes, and collected piles of "black sand" iron ore lost from the lake freighters coming down from the Mesabi Range to the steel mills. Memories!

When you were digging under those trees, I thought, good crop of potatoes! What a shame they were all rocks! But gorgeously shaped rocks like that would be very pretty painted paper weights. A bit heavy to post perhaps, but they could be sold locally in gift shops. Is there any native art, local to your region, that you can use as inspiration? A great science lesson today for all ages. Black sand was new to me too.

Use a couple drops of dish soap on your concentrates, scrub with fingers then pan. Opalized schist maybe whats the hardness of the weird rock? Sluice the area in the spring melt, when you have water, you can move lots more pay dirt for same energy spent, or build a fire and melt snow for water build a small 5 ft sluice out of corrugated pipe. Have fun.
