  • The amazing Rabbi Jon Hanish leads the signing of the Jewish Marriage Contract for this couple, Rachel and Shawn. See how this ceremony progresses and what a wonderful family they have - another two camera ceremony captured by Charles Lauren Films - Real Time Wedding Memories!
i want everyone to take a moment and
    just
just be quiet because you've been
    rushing around
so we've come together today for a very
    special occasion we've come
to see these two people well these two
wonderful people who i've gotten to know
over the last few months come together
    in union
not the kind of union that makes babies
    we know they've done that
not enough of a laugh on that one okay i
    expected a bit more that
but the kind of union that unites their
    lives forever
the kind of union that's spiritual or
    their hearts truly become
bound together and the idea of his
wedding is that you're coming in front
of family and friends and saying
we plan to span spend in eternity
    together
it's very easy to live together because
when you live together you decide it's
time it's over you just walk away
you don't have to make any public
statements but when you are married
well you are making an official
statement in front of everyone that you
    are going to be together
and god forbid it should end you have to
    make another public statement
there is a seriousness to marriage and
    to commitment
that's very different than just two
    people living with one another
so we start this very happy occasion
with sean crying i've done a good job of
    that many times now
i apologize sean i thought at least i
could wait until we get into the chupa
so the first thing we do well first
thing i like to do is to tell the story
of jacob our ancestor jacob worked for
seven years to the hand of his beloved
her name was rachel thank you very much
he worked seven years the head of rachel
he was listening during our meetings i'm
    impressed
he went to bed that night he woke up the
    next morning in bed with
does he not rachel with her sister
leia and because of this we've created a
    tradition because he felt tricked
he went to his father-long said you
tricked me and the father-in-law laban
    said
well it's not done in our world we do
not marry the younger before the older
and so we created a ritual where a groom
would lift the veil of a bride and say
i was not tricked this is the right one
well in today's world i like to have an
    egalitarian statement
read like the two of you to read this
together to state that you're not being
    tricked that this
is a marriage that you enter into with
    full heart
and 21 our god source of all creation
we pray that the ability to love and
may you endure us with the strength to
    be
ever sensitive to each other and made
    the blessings of companionship
    parenthood
as we learn the songs of songs i am the
    beloveds
and the beloved is mine we declare
    before
    family friends and god
that was fantastic thank you guys
we need some kleenex here okay could you
    please stop touching though because
    you're not married yet
yes thank you that was very upsetting
can you hold one end of this after you
get done sneezing oh wait a second can
    you hold one end
and can you hold the other a ketubah is
    a jewish wedding license a
wedding contract in the old days it was
a very negative thing and the old days
was about what would happen if the
    couple
well if the marriage didn't go well how
    would they end end it
and it spoke about how many goats and
sheep would go to each of them and you
would take the gutuba and you'd shove it
into a closet and you would never look
    at it
because it was bad luck to look at it in
    today's world
it's changed the ketubah is a statement
of what they feel in their hearts
about their commitment to one another
and we'll read it fully later
but they have agreed to its terms and i
want every witness in this room to know
that they have agreed to its terms
so you do that by pulling on that just
pull just give a joke you're both
pulling you both embassies are both
    pulling correct
this is a special pen if you push down
on it it will stop flowing
so i ask people to practice their
    signatures once
and do with a light touch before you
    sign and then you'll sign
on the top line that says bride
may the god of our ancestors give you
strength as you enter into marriage
standing in under and around this
tallest are two families that have come
    together because of your love
may they continue to support you and
love you may they always be behind you
    may they
always give you the foundation you need
    to grow stronger each
day these families are important to your
    strength and your survival
but because of your love they have come
together may you all be blessed
    and together we say amen
