    Is it possible to "judge the plates by tapping" after they have been installed on the ribs?

      Yes. I am a bit nerdy, but you can tap over the bass bar, for instance and check if it is too thick or thin.
      You may also find thick or thin spots by tapping. You can experiment with it before glueing the top on and see how it works.

    I’ve heard a story about a Guarneri violin with a huge knot in one of the plates. Apparently it has made no detriment to the sound.
