I say calmly: XG GROUP OF THE YEAR! They may not have numbers or a large fan base (because quantity does not mean quality), but in terms of perfection they were IMPECCABLE! They simply released SHOOTING STARS, LEFT RIGHT, GRL GVNG, TGIF, NEW DANCE AND PUPPET SHOW >only< in 2023. This is very surreal! This year they delivered aesthetics, concept, marketing, photography, EVERYTHING! How can they not have ONE bad song?!
Note: I'm not part of the fandom, but it's NECESSARY to recognize that they were giants this year.
Nothing against other groups but they do benefit from being K-pop. Even if the song suck or it’s not their type of music, people will still watch it because it’s kpop. XG may be associated with K-pop but they don’t enjoy the same benefits
This is a fact and even though im dissapointed that people are so blind to see the masterpiece XG's presenting but at the same time im so proud in everthing that XG had achieved so far. I am sooo looking forward for their bright future!
@@crash5758 other group do benefit from being K-pop in the K-pop music market, but the market is small (2% of global market) despite the number (due to mass streaming), and HYBE CEO said the market is in decline. HYBE, JYP already trying to debut a 'global' group and SM has announced a global audition, even with survival show aiming to debut a "global" group (even though global vote amount only to 30%). With more competition domestically, decline in population, China banning K-pop, every major K-pop company trying to expand globally. If XG keep getting attention in Japan and US, that's a massive music market (2nd & 1st in market size) they have amazing potential among the 4th generation.

What you said about XG experimenting is so true. Harvey's "toothless" look was being discussed and netizens were saying it didn't look good and what not. I commend Simon and XG for not being afraid of "not looking pretty/aesthetic" if it means their message gets across. In a sense they remind me of Sunmi and how she is also going the extra mile to deliver a message. Their outfits, make up, hairstyles, etc... are not for everyone but no one else could pull it off like them.
Yes, I can't imagine a kpop video where they edit the members' images as much as they did in tgif, the clothes are often questionable but completely within the theme, they deliver

Glad to see you back for XG. It’s been awhile lol. Hesono O is Japanese for umbilical cord. It’s the way they describe themselves as being connected. Also, Hesono O has to be listened with X-gene as they are technically connected into one song.

XG just hits different. The talent, charisma, choreo, and rap/vocals are off the damn charts. You can tell by the cohesiveness of their work that everything is so well thought out and planned. Big props to Simon and the XG team, they have yet to miss.

I’m in my 40s and a proud Alpha. They have many fans who are older. I play them in my gift shop and the young people love it but I have yet to meet any who know who they are. They are more familiar with popular Kpop groups.
It's been 12 years for me into a group band, the first one is SNSD and after that I just listening to a group band song in general, and there's XG, I feel so refreshed.

Your end commentary and feedback are so powerful. Yes XG definitely broke that mold and they define their own music which makes them unique and should stand out in the industry. I’m really hoping they will and they should. No other group or label is doing what they are doing both in the Western and Asian scenes. They made music interesting again.
I started out listening to and playing alternative rock, hard rock, and so on. Then moved to producing and playing dance music. So I was getting bored. Then I heard Blackpink and it opened up my ears to K-pop. But it got boring again and I tried listening to other K-pop artists, it just didn’t interest me. Then XG popped out of nowhere. I'm like, wtf is this?. The first stuff I heard from them was their Xypher. At first, I was hesitant since it’s rap, I’m not into new hip-hop. I prefer the old-school 80's to the late 90’s. And also the fact that I didn’t want to know names or who is who since there are 7 of them, too old to know names lol. I had a hard time with BP already lol. On their Xypher, they looked really intimidating and I assumed they were just another cookie-cutter K-pop group.
Then after discovering Tippy Toes and Mascara. I was so wrong. They’re different. They basically combined all the genres I vibe with. Then Shooting Star came. That’s when I realized I wanted and needed to follow this group. Left Right felt old school and it solidified my interest in them. Then they keep coming up with contents like Vox (love this), Tape, and Move. It was over.
Then they showed how wholesome they are by giving us Xtra days and Xtra XG. Remember, I thought they were these cookie-cutter K-pop artists. Another wrong assumption lol. XTRA XTRA made me fall in love with them and their 3 meals a day showed their colorful, loving, and chaotic personality. You can’t help but relate.
They’re just very different imho. They make you laugh, smile, and cry. And watching their MV and listening to their music makes you feel good and youthful. And you’re right, our generation really wishes we are young again and you’re not the only one that’s been saying that. As if XG discovered the fountain of youth and gave it to us. They are the fountain of youth.

I agree with you, sometimes we forgot that kpop is a very limited space artistically. It doesnt mean a bad thing tho, the high standard that kpop have is definitely the reason that made kpop unique to other "genre". But inside kpop itself, they dont display that much personality.
Really, we need to give props to the production teams. I think the team are all from korea. But you can see that they use a different guidelines than usual kpop groups have. Like they dont have many full-face shots, the make up are more elaborate, the NAILS, and the outfits are all outstandings. I think they do try to incorporate japanese fashion trends into this, like there are no place in the world that would be as crazy as japanese when it comes to mixing, layering colors and textures. Its not for everyone, but they definitely having fun making all of the looks.
Stragely, futuristic/sci-fi concept is actually pretty popular within jpop, but ofc not as elaborate as XG. There are FEMM, a performers duo that is also under Avex (XG's main company). FEMM labeled themselves as a real-life mannequin, so when they performing they always have robotic choreo and their mv are also very futuristic, and they sings in english too. And as an old pop fan, I do think that they gain a lot of ideas from old-school jpop, in 90's and early 2000's jpop is heavily inspired by american music, hence there are a lot of rnb and hip-hop performers. And I'm pretty sure japanese diva like Namie Amuro or Koda Kumi had a very futuristic mv, I cant remember which one tho.
XG's giving us something fresh and nobodys doing it like they do.

28:10 I think I get you. There are a set of kpop tropes that have worked for over a decade now so they aren’t testing the boundaries of those tropes as much. It’s creative, but a limited creativity. It’s creative within some fairly rigid boundaries. I mean, I love NCT but making a song about Baggy Jeans? It’s visually and aurally appealing but…it’s about pants. It’s a song about pants. The pants could be a metaphor but it’s still pants and they are taking their pants seriously. The girl groups don’t seem to move boundaries even as much as the boy groups do, with some exceptions. (G)IDLE for instance. The music is generally safe and predictable and not quite as weird or fun. In my opinion, that is.
I’m loving XG. The music is good and it’s fun. I like the fun girl power vibe. They’re a bizarre mix of EXO and the Spice Girls but they manage to not sound dated at all. It sounds really fresh and interesting. And they are all so talented! OMG their voices and the charisma!

Yes 🙌🏽 XG to Top 🔝 it All Off they did a Live Performance at Kcon LA where they performed a remix of 2ne1’s “I am the Best”. It’s CRAZY 😜 Excellent. I’ve seen COCONA sing an excerpt of their “Come Back Home” in a game where they use a WORD and Associate it with a Song. MAYA stated they were her one ☝🏽 of the Group or Artist she looked up to. So…seeing them. cover 2ne1 was Shocking but fulfilling at the SAME TIME. I know you love them too because of your name. They achieved 1# on Billboard 100 in the US and it’s the first of a Xpop Japanese Girl Group to do it. “TGIF” was trending in 27’ Countries when it came out. Great Reaction. 🙋🏻♀️❤️🔥🇺🇸🐺
Je pense qu'avec XG, la chose la plus intelligente sur laquelle leur team a tout misé c'est des choix stratégique. La stratégie dans le marketting de leur projet, dans leur image etc... à tel point que, comme tu l'a dit c'est très difficile d'etre original à aujourd'hui quand tellement de choses ont déjà été faites mais, avec elles, meme si dans chaque détail y a techniquement rien d'original, quand tu met tout ca ensemble ca fait un mélange explosif. En fait au niveau sonore, quand j'écoute XG je me retrouve en tant qu'enfant à fangirl/fanboy devant Monster High et Barbie, ca m'a fait ca avec Shooting Star et Puppet show, avec quand meme beaucoup de code que tu peux retrouver dans la kpop comme les choré et l'éclectisme sonore, y avait un peu de house par ici, de la dream pop par là, et ca te clou à ta chaise et te fait retrouver cette curiosité d'enfant, quelque part c'est vite fait une madeleine de Proust (en parlant de madeleine de Proust, la réference à skyrock, oh lala ca date :D). Et au niveau visuel, toi t'as dis en rigolant que c'est comme si leur team s'étaient mis en réu et s'étaient demandé "alors, qu'est-ce que Coco aime?", et bah moi en regardant leur clips j'ai l'impression de voir mes tableaux Pinterest!! C'est impressionant tout les détails intéréssant et cohérant qui sont trouvé et mis dans leur clip, j'ai l'impression que leur team c'est une IA humaine parce que y a de la subjectivité et des imperfections (et tant mieux, j'aime pas les IA lol) mais c'est juste inventif comme il le faut et ca va quelque part! Et le truc qui me fruste dans les arts visuels aujourd'hui c'est que t'as tellement de matière à faire des trucs de ouf, des histoires et des mondes à inventer, sauf que tu te retrouve que avec une oeuvre cinématographique ou un clip vidéo iconique par décénnie (je peux t'en citer quatre là maintenant: Arcane, League Of Legends, Avatar de James Cameron, Barbie et Girl Gvng de XG, c'est les seuls qui me viennent en tete), alors que tu peux t'inspirer de tellement de choses, de tes origines, de notre situation géopolitique ou environnementale, des croyances humaines, de tes reves, etc... Et faire un blend intelligent comme ce qui a été fait dans Girl Gvng, entre le makeup un peu liner graphique style cyberpunk, le concept Si-Fi comme tu dit avec ce mélange alien, sirène, robots, et des tenues basic dans leur couleur mais juste avec des assymétries, c'est parfait! Franchement XG, pour l'instant, c'est un sans faute!

XG have been my favorite artist this year I think. When I make my top 10 songs of the year in December there are going to multiple XG songs on the list for sure. The music is good, the girls are fun, the fashion is bold and fearless and breaks away from the boring “aesthetic pretty” that has been dominating lately. It’s just been so much fun to watch them kill it this year and I’m excited to see what they bring next!
This is really how everyone should have discovered XG. Binging is the way to go, otherwise you miss entire genres they explore.

It’s insane what XG has released and accomplished in JUST 2023. From Shooting Star & Left Right all the way up to Puppet Show. XG has set a new standard for music videos 100%. XG should easily be nominated for MV of the year, Group of Year, Album of the Year. They don’t have to win but for them to be not at least just be nominated would be criminal. And X-GENE is 🔥🔥🔥 I really wish Simon would have made that a full song

Totally agree they don't really fit into the category of k-pop. That's not to say they're j-pop either. They're just in a category of their own and that's what I love about them.
The reason you can't see any kpop that is close or similar to XG is mainly because they aren't afraid to see talents before visuals. It's the truth and kpop focuses on visuals, that's what they admit because they want to accumulate fans by visuals coz it's what the industry is all about and they forgot talent. It's actually a waste of talent and possibilities to explore better concepts because of kpop's restrictions. On the other hand, XG isn't afraid to look ugly when they dance and yet they still look good in some ways and they look even more visualizing in focusing in their real dancing and singing with raps than focusing on visuals itself. Out of the box but this is also the reason why I love BlackPink and EXO, although they are still bound with the kpop restrictions to put more visuals, they aren't afraid to look not so visualizing just to serve talent and I think XG, BlackPink and EXO have that. And as for me who sings and has a tiny, little bit of singing talent, I can have a say that these 3 groups I mentioned has this IT factor for me.
