Hey there is 1 Burger Chef still running and it's not a Hardee's. When Burger Chef shut it's doors, the Manager of my local Burger Chef restaurant bought the whole place lock, stock and barrel for cheap and kept the same suppliers of everything shipping to him. Everything is still cooked the same way, he just changed the name.
This "Burger Chef" is now called, "Pete's Burgers and More" and is located in Reidsville, NC. They are packed with customers everyday. If you ever want to know how REAL burgers and fries used to taste 40+yrs ago, make a trip there.
BTW their fries taste so much better than McD's!! My family and I only go Pete's on burger nights.

Howard Johnson’s gets a very prominent exposure in Hitchcock’s “Marnie,” and if I’m not mistaken, one or both versions of “Lolita” (presumably in the Nabokov novel I never read as well). The demise of Bill Knapp's was a damned shame. It may be best remembered for its chocolate cake, but its fried chicken to this day remains the best I've ever had. Alas, the company's boneheaded executives couldn't leave well enough alone, and had to drive away its customer base and ultimately run the business into the ground in an effort to make the restaurants more "hip." Once the big stores moved in , like Walmart and Meijers , the smaller stores moved out . Farrell’s, a staple of ‘70s childhood, is gone, too.
Was gonna mention the pirate-themed Jolly Rogers chain, but a quick look-see on Google indicates there are a few left. Huh. Weird.
Gonna need to do a plague-themed sequel to this list soon, though.
Soup Plantation threw in the towel, fairly early. (No surprise, given it was a buffet.)
Pretty sure that PizzaRev is on life support. And Stacked is down to one location, I think. Hells, even the local Red Robin is gone…

Red Robin isn't exactly struggling. Though I don't go as often anymore since they added Donatos pizza to the menu and cut out the ghost burger which was easily the best on the menu.

Red Robin is no loss, based on the one that was (might still be there) in Cedar Rapids.
Way overpriced, for a tiny overdone burger.

When my husband and I attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior together in the 70s there was a restaurant we used to go to called Sambo's. For obvious reasons in today's culture that restaurant would not exist. I don't remember when or why it went out of business.

Their downfall had to do with a type of pyramid scheme where store managers would get 20% of the profits of their store, but could also obtain additional profits from the other newer stores. Eventually they could not add enough new stores to keep up with the earnings promised. The SEC got involved.

I remember Walgreens' restaurant in a mall here in Louisville (was attached to the drug store). I remember conning my parents into reluctantly eating there, simply because it was a novelty to me, since I was a country kid.
I miss Bonanza. They had a crazy huge buffet back in the day. I know Stuckey's is still in business, but I don't see them in my travels any more. It was always a treat to stop there.
You will probably be able to add Golden Corral, Ryan's, Old Country Buffet, and Hometown Buffet to the DOA list soon. The parent companies of all of those have declared bankruptcy and closed all of their locations around where I live.

Growing up there was only one franchise in my home town, Burger Chef. We passed it on the way into town and again on the way home. I remember they had really good food compared to the McDonalds and Hardees that opened years later. I also miss Kenny Rogers Roasters, a co-worker and I would get take out lunch on 3rd shift. Half a chicken, two sides, and cornbread. Good times.
