    Very useful tips. First eq for cutting, and the second for boosting if needed.

    This is a great, simple explanation to a question I see on forums and groups all the time, excellent stuff!

    You can also use the high pass in reacomp not to trigger the compressor

    • @Kikokaoss
      @Kikokaoss 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I thought the same, but surely Kenny did it that way for a more visual explanation that you can implement even with a diferent compressor with no built-in filters. And if you want or need to cut the mid frequencies then you will use an Eq.

    • @pvalenti
      @pvalenti 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Kikokaoss that was my take away as well. If all you want or need to do is high pass the low end, then you could just use those controls on ReaComp. However if you are cutting bands and doing subtractive EQ that should go before compression, and if you are boosting that should go after.
      Not only is this an astute observation, I agree with it 100%!

    • @eegoal
      @eegoal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Kikokaoss Yes but the disadvantage of using an eq instead of the built-in highpass/lowpass is that the eq will get rid of those frequencies for good. On the other hand, the highpass and lowpass function in reacomp will just make the compressor ignore those frequencies and compress the whole signal as one(it won't roll off those frequencies, it'll just ignore them so they don't trigger the compressor).

    • @Kikokaoss
      @Kikokaoss 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@eegoal That's the beauty and flexibility of the tools you have at your disposal. If you need to cut frequencies do It with an eq before the compressor. If you need to filter the signal in order to not affect the compression negatively and don't want/need cut frequencies then use the built-in filters, and then you can use an eq after compression too for boosting frequencies.

    I've been watching your videos for a few months now, since I got Reaper. They are super helpful. I'm trying to remaster some old songs from the 80's and 90's that I digitized about 15 years ago.

    Good tutorial. An alternative route, if you don't really want to apply EQ is to use multi-band compression and set higher threshold for the lower frequencies.

      I'm guessing it's because he's not officially endorsed by reaper and can't make profit off of tutorials on software he doesn't own.

    Hey Kenny, thank you so much for videos. They are what helped me get into using Reaper! Also, could you make a video about Reaper’s “video processor” plugin? I noticed reaper has a new built-in plugin titled “video processor,” but I have no idea how to use it. Can you use it to edit videos, or does it do something else? If you don’t want to make a video about this, could you just try to at least answer my question with a reply? Thanks so much!
