If there's 15 moving companies in your town then eventually people will figure out which few are the best and the others will go out of business, that's how things work!
I work in a market where there are actual moving companies that compete infairly. By unfairly I mean they have prices so low that it is impossible for them to pay a decent wage and have a profit. They are most likely cheating on their taxes. Many of these companies have a high score on rating sites despite this. @No Touchy Exactly, in the end it just increases prices for consumers because now a simple moving company needs to have lawyers ready to fight another unnecessary layer of bureaucracy.
He (himself) may not have written the law but what influence- in the way of campaign contributions- did those who petitioned the government to write it have in its crafting/wording?

John, I hired an interstate moving company who quoted one price based upon square footage. when they got to the house, suddenly it was 1000 sq ft more ($4000). they charged extra for boxing and materials. I received a box with 6 unopened 6 packs of strapping tape. Maybe an expose on the scalawags of the moving industry. Very common according to my admittedly limited research. They would not open the doors of the truck until I paid balance in cash in full, presumably because I would see that the truck wasn't full. I can prove that based upon the size of the truck, it did not contain the increased amount, but too late.

@BullfrogWisdom and don't forget Eminent domain, that is another law where governments often overreach in acquiring private land against people's will. They can just give what they want for the land and take it.
This kind of "law" has long existed in the U.S. (and every other nation). A very glaring and obvious example are the laws protecting existing, big-business ISP's. In my opinion, it is this kind of inequity, and the fact that these criminals aren't pursued by any law-enforcing agency and prosecuted, that causes the majority of Americans to feel as though they are competing in an unfair system (which we are), and the wealthy are given a distinct advantage far beyond the fact that they have more money. The strife and conflict in the U.S. starts with the knowledge that we ARE oppressed, and, in my opinion, is largely responsible for all kinds of lower-level crime justified in the minds of perpetrators because they believe it's the only way they have of getting what they want. So, for example, in their minds, it's okay to sell illegal drugs on the street, and enforce their position in the market with extreme measures (including killing your competition), because that is, after all, the way our society really works, and it's easier to sell drugs than try to get ahead by working a job for someone else in a system that is inherently unfair.
@Maximillian Wylde You seem to be saying we need a king to make our nation fair and equitable. If that is your belief, I suggest your understanding of history, and monarchies as they have existed and exist today, is very much flawed. Monarchies are not only as susceptible to corruption as any other form of government, but tend to be more draconian in the measures taken to enforce the wishes of the monarch (and those the monarch favors).
@Maximillian Wylde that's why our genius Founders decentralized government, created check & balances, minimized government power, etc. The filibuster & gridlock are great tools to slow down the dismantling of our government (I should say "was"....our Constitutional Republic is long gone)

4:00 “Consumers go for the cheapest price”. That’s the deal in a free economy. We have a CHOICE. When we choose CHEAP, it’s your duty to find a way to compete with CHEAP. Why? Because the “Consumer goes for the cheap price”.

So he makes more money providing less service and after everybody figures out he’s a cheat using regulations to game the consumer, he’ll use regulations to form his golden parachute.

A similar thing is happening with real estate. In Texas TREC (Texas Real Estate Commission) is run by brokers who were able to start their businesses with no red tape, but every year they add more red tape to make it harder for their new competitors.
Regulatory capture and rent seeking 101. It's in every industry.
Imagine if Home Depot DID say that-"Hey, we don't want another Hardware store in this area...Lowe's..ya gotta go! Anyone else thinkin' of opening up a hardware store-NOPE...no can do!!" That would suck! They are good, but they don't carry EVERYTHING, I know, I used to work there!
It's getting to the point where a little "friendly competition" is against the law! WHAT!! This is what America is founded on.
If you're needed, you'll get business. Simple as that. Most people also want quality and just because you're established doesn't mean you'll be the right choice for a customer.
I live in KY and can’t believe we have departments and laws that won’t let in new competitors. So ridiculous. I stand with RJ and Wildcat Moving!
Stossel is at it again! Well done!!
50 years ago my dad and I started a school bus company in NY. We were immediately stopped by the main competition. We had to hire a lawyer and prove in court there was a need for our service. Long and short of it was we provided a service that was way better then that competitor's.
Like how they always claim that "it is bad for customers" and never say "it is bad for my business" lol
That is the game. Get your crony politician elected and have him sell your crony protectionist law as a consumer protection bill.
I’m a mechanic. On the side I buy broken down cars, fix them and resell them. I can only do this three times a year or I need a dealer license. The dealer license protects the consumer. You know how that works! You go into a small used car lot in an industrial part of town and you get a fair deal on a safe vehicle that has been reconditioned properly. Thanks to them being licensed dealers. Nope those cars haven’t been in floods and had the titles washed, or they haven’t been wrecked and poorly repaired, no rolled back odometers, brake pads weren’t installed backwards by some junky they hired off the street with a craftsman mechanic tool set he just shoplifted from Lowe’s. None of that thanks to that license. Oh and none of those places are involved in organized crime either.
Thank you for no midroll adds, no one
watches them anyway, no gain there.
I let opening and closing adds run.
*I hope others will do the same and help support this channel.*
I hope this gets to the Supreme Court quickly.
They won the case in 2014; federal judge overruled the state’s law
I can't find it in my duckduckgo results, but Mr. Sandefur debated at Claremont College Law School several years ago about cronyist regulations, centered on a Supreme Court case called Lochner v. New York. I'm sure there's still a recording somewhere.
KRS 281.615 was Repealed in 2015. Good work, John.
The more companies there are, the more innovations you have, and the better it is for the consumer .
I would think the existence and success of the business would be proof enough that there is "room in the market".
This is the problem when politicians are corrupted by money from certain groups. These people in the KMA don't support capitalism, the want socialism where the state chooses which companies can exist. In capitalism, only the customer decides what they want to buy and who they want to hire, which is the way it should be. Freedom first, last and always. Great video.
Laws that are unconstitutional should not only be challenged in court, but the creators of them should be prosecuted, and should pay penalties of fines and/or jail time (if found guilty, of course).
"I'm not the one who set the law. I'm just abiding by the law."
A good solider follows orders.
Wonder how much lobbying and wining and dining the politicians he did. Crony capitalism is why many people think socialism is a good idea.
Why does the government hate freedom. Why. You used to be able to do anything you set your mind to.
Because government IS BAD
For power, direction, and control.
