  • Play Alesis Vortex Wireless 2 on Android phone.
    You may not know this but you don't actually need a computer to use the Alesis vortex wireless 2, you can use an android phone or an android tablet that has On The Go support.
    So if you already have the phone (or tablet) you just need the OTG cable that costs less than a fiver! and any of the free apps available on Google Play Store.
    Personally I use the BandLab app but have also tried Perfect Piano and Midi Keyboard.

    Would this also work if I sent the Phone's audio to a bluetooth speaker? 🙂

      In theory yes but audio by Bluetooth has a lot of latency (delay) so I think the delay between pressing a key on the vortex and hearing the sound come out of the Bluetooth speaker would make it very difficult to play.

      Hi, unfortunately the price of iphones here in the UK are stupidly expensive so I don't have one to do a test but technically it should work with a camera adapter cable. I would worry that the latency would be too high though... Anyone tried connecting a Vortex to an iphone?

      The Vortex is a midi controller and not a synth, so it can be used to control a real synth (or virtual synth on a pc or phone) but it does not have any sounds of its own and cannot be used on its own.
      The Yamaha shs 500 (and shs 300) can be used on its own but is very basic. There are also other synth keytars that can be used on there own, like the Roland Ax Edge, but they are much more expensive.

    Sir I have a question, does the Alesis Vortex Wireless 2 have speakers on it? I knew that it doesn't have internal sounds, but I'm still wondering if that has a built in speaker. Thank you😊

    • @IbandUK
      @IbandUK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      the Vortex Wireless 2 has no sounds of it's own, it is just a midi controller and not a synth, so there is no speaker of any kind in the the Vortex Wireless 2. When connected to an Android phone it plays the synth app on the phone and uses the phone's speaker.

      @@IbandUK thank you for answering my question, now i know. Sir if the android/phone is connected on a speaker (a bluetooth speaker or a big speaker), will the sound transfer to the speaker? I'm just asking that because I'm confused

    • @IbandUK
      @IbandUK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      the sound is generated by the android phone the same way it generates the sound for any songs or video (or youtube videos) played on the android phone so the sound would transfer to a bluetooth speaker, however, there is a significant delay (or latency) when using audio over bluetooth so I would doubt it would be any good. If the android phone has a headphone socket then a lead could be plugged into that and connected to a suitable powered speaker.

    Should work with fl studio mobile also... thing is.... I have an xperia xz3, and it has no separate headphone jack, goes via the usb port also.... So if i connect the keytar via usb, i cant connect any headphones :/ im looking for a way to send signal to phone directly instead of through the usb dongle 🤔

    • @IbandUK
      @IbandUK  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not aware of any way to send the signal without using the dongle...but, here is a test I have just done, I connected a 4 port usb hub (must be a hub that supports MAC OSX) to the On The Go cable, plugged in the Vortex and a usb memory stick, played a song on the usb stick and played the Vortex at the same time. All worked fine. So I am thinking you might possibly be able to use a hub. Looks like the xz3 has a C-type connector so obviously you would need a hub that has a C-type port fo the headphone adapter as well as an A-type port for the dongle (looks like they sell them for around £10 on Amazon so might be worth a try).

    Thanks for the how-to! I am just a beginner. A bit struggeling with the behavior of the Vortex Wireless 2. Independent from using usb or wireless, if I strike the keys, the first one creates the tone quite normal. striking following keys the loudness of every tone is reducing more and more. Only if i strike every key very hard, the loudness of every key is equal. hope i was able to explain it well. maybe there is an adjustment necessary?

      Hi, I haven't had this problem but there are few things you can do or check.
      If you haven't updated your Vortex Wireless 2 firmware to the one on the Alesis website then I would try that first. When I first got my Vortex it was doing some weird stuff so I updated the firmware and all has been fine since.
      Record some notes in Ableton Live lite (if you are using a computer) or in BandLab (if you are using a mobile device) and check the velocity (volume) of the recorded notes. In Ableton you click on the recorded section name to see a piano roll view at the bottom of the screen - the vertical lines at the bottom of that section show the recorded velocity of each key. In Bandlab, check out my video on how to check the velocity of recorded notes th-cam.com/video/zZkMYDfrbtc/w-d-xo.html
      if the velocity of each note is pretty much the same then the problem is on the output side (music software or soundcard).
      If the problem is the input side (your finger style or the Vortex) then connect the Vortex to a computer and open up the Vortex Preset Editor software. Click on the last tab (Program Change Keybed) and in the second section (Split Point) change the first parameter (Curve). This parameter changes the way the keys react to you pressing the keys. Curve 1 is the default and is a straight 45 degree line, Curve 2 is a slightly slower curve, Curve 3 to 7 are 's' shaped curves, Curve 8 is a straight line full velocity so every note is played at full velocity even if you only touch the key lightly.
      Lastly, it is remotely possible that this is a battery problem so you could try using new fully charged batteries.

      Hi, first check you have pressed the lower zone button on the Vortex, most software and apps use midi channel 1 and by default the Vortex uses the upper zone (which is set by default to midi channel 2). The lower zone by default is midi channel 1. I consider myself a Vortex guru but even I get caught out by this sometimes.
      If you are using Ableton Live Lite, make sure the Vortex appears as an input device in the midi section of preferences (and remote is on), select the Vortex as the input for a midi channel that you have added a midi instrument to and click on the ARM button so it is red (sound will not play if the ARM button for the midi track is not red). Also, the Vortex may not work in Ableton Live Lite if the Vortex Preset Editor Software is open on your computer at the same time (Windows doesn't usually allow usb ports to be shared between softwares or apps).
      If you still have problems, let me know which software you are using and whether you are using the wireless dongle or connecting by usb cable.

    Very nice. Besides BTooth, have you pinpointed largest latency contributor? e.g. Android OS? Are there wide speed differences between the downlooads e.g. Bandlab mor e/less latency than MIDI Keys? Certain programs within each better or worse? If everything hardwired is it giggable ? Doubtful.....

    • @IbandUK
      @IbandUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Bluetooth midi is usually adds about 5ms latency, latest Android versions usually add about 40ms, BandLab depends on the number of tracks and fx being used. While some top end Android devices may still support Google's ill fated hardware acceleration for pro music audio, I doubt it would bring the overall latency down to 20ms (which is the max you really want to gig with). Android midi is just a fun mobile option, even Windows or Mac laptops would struggle (though not impossible with the right gear) to provide a gig ready latency for live work. For live music I would stick to purpose built hardware and connect the Vortex (via Bluetooth) to a synth or sound module (mines a vintage Waldorf Micro Q).

      Yes, the Alesis website states that you need the usb camera adapter to connect the Vortex Wireless dongle to an IOS device such as an iPhone or iPad. BandLab is available on IOS but it should work with Apple's Garageband too.

      Hi, if your smartphone supports OTG (on the go) then yes because to connect the dongle to your smartphone you will need an OTG cable. OTG cables can be bought from Amazon with either a C type usb connector for your phone or with the older micro usb connector.

      @@IbandUK Thanks again. My biggest problem is that there is latency.... any idea how to avoid that?

    • @IbandUK
      @IbandUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      Android OS is the problem unfortunately, latency is the time it takes for the Android OS to pass the request to play a sound and actually send it to the soundcard to play. Better android devices with better processor and memory might reduce latency but more practically, reducing the number of apps running on the device might help. Ultimately though, latency will be a problem on Android.
