Subsidiary Alliance was launched by Richard Wellesley or Lord Wellesley. Subsidiary Alliance is considered as a political policy which was used by the britishers to annex Indian states. Britishers believed in a variety of political policies and direct wars. They would always try to use political policies instead of direct wars since direct wars required more expenditure from their end. In this policy, they said that Indian rulers cannot have their own army, instead britishers would offer them with protection. The Indian rulers had to pay subsidiary forces to the britishers in turn which was taken in the form of revenue but if they failed to pay this revenue then a part of their land was taken away from them. Indian rulers were lured into this set trap because the subsidiary forces that they had to lay to the britishers was lesser than the amount they would spend on their army but they failed to realise the trap that britishers had set. If the Indian ruler was harmed by any other Indian ruler then they would be offered protection by the britishers but if the britishers tried to harm them, then there was no escape for the Indian ruler. There were also several consequences or terms and conditions that the Indian ruler had to follow for this policy. The Indian ruler had to accept a British resident in their court, the Indian ruler could not negotiate with other Indian rulers, the Indian ruler could not be allies with any non British Europeans. This resulted in the Indian ruler losing his authority, losing his capital, losing his army and losing his independence. The vast number of people employed in the army also became unemployed due to this policy.
