  • On 1 April 1992, Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock held a campaign rally in Sheffield, just a week before that year's general election. The rally is remembered for striking an infamously triumphalist tone, with ostentatious pageantry and Kinnock's exclamation of "we're alright!" or "well alright" contrasting with Labour's surprise election defeat a week later. While Lord Kinnock today maintains that he said "well alright" and not the more commonly quoted "we're alright", he has in the years since conceded that the scale and choreography of the event portrayed a sense of complacency rather than the "modest competence" he had wished to get across.
