  • It may seem counterintuitive but the power supplies for slot car starter sets are too powerful. And they could be the cause of new slot racers not staying with the hobby.

The AFX TriPowerPack has been around for a number of years now. It operates at 8, 12, and 22 volts so even the youngest racer can make it around the 63 foot AFX Giant Raceway. AFX even makes a terminal track that let's you plug in a separate power supply for each lane, that's been around for decades. If you're running a four lane you can put a separate TriPowerPack to each lane.....as you say, "no bs".

Agree, love the policar supply when kids want to play. Saves my cars and their frustration.

I've recently discovered your videos, and I love all the great info! I have only been into 1/32 slots for a short time, and I have a base Carrera set. I wish I had seen this video first, because I may have to get a Policar set now. I have limited room, and with the variable power supply this would be a great set for me. Thanks for the info!

Thank you very much for watching! Check out my video about the Carrera Trans Am, I’m a fan of that car too as you will see.

In the same vein I always try to dissuade people from putting in more powerful motors into cars. One option that sometimes (!) work is to by an "inline dimmer". This is a dimmer you plug into the wall and then you plug the power supply into the dimmer. PLEASE NOTE: SOME power supplies heat up with the dimmer connected so the first time you use it keep a VERY close eye on it. USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! Another tip is if possible get independent power for each lane... That can be more tricky though...

I had the same problem recently with a new Carrera Evolution set. With the Carrera controller, its not as much of a problem keeping the car on the track because its so insensitive, but I bought Professor Motor resistor controllers, and with them, it's absolutely impossible to keep the cars on the track, especially the fast cars like NSR, Scale Auto, Revoslot, etc because they just fly with the PM controllers. I bought a 0-30V 10A variable power supply and problem basically solved as I can turn down the power for the cars that are simply too fast for a short home track setup. Although the analog set PS can be adjusted to only put out 70% power, it doesn't help, especially because the Carrera digital DTM cars that came with the set, just don't handle well at all out of the box and it takes a little while to know what to do to make cars handle better. Buy a variable PS before buying cars, you will be so glad you did.

The digital carrera does adjust power pretty well, once the basic driving skill is acquired the cars need more power with the power all the way up..........then you get a slot it car and it smokes the tires instantly everywhere all the time non stop............I think the slot its need a really good sized track to use their power.

I was very impressed to say the least when I had the chance to test the Policar system. The star of that show was the supply. No matter how great you think the plastic is...newcomers/kids/parents don't care. That ability to tone them down to REASONABLE voltage is where the Policar team just made fools of the other brands. I will give Scalextric a nod for the controllers, they do the job. Carrera? Time to put down the Beer and Bratwurst and get with it.
