Hey mate, havent watched the episode yet. But no need to apologize about the quality. Its amazing you are taking the time to source and upload all this. And at the end of the day these are old episodes from the late 1990s. Your videos are a dam site better quality than the VHS rips i did of my old tapes i recorded when i was a kid. Massive thanks for you time.
Okay, I admit I first heard of this thing through the Hardcore Kid back when he had videos all about the UK's beginnings with the sport, but I'm really loving it! Jeremy was kind of a knob jockey in Series 1, but the rest was really good. And I love how the guy announcing over the battles/challenges themselves can be pretty snarky while talking. I especially loved the scene with him commenting on the little girl's change from being a fan of Matilda to Killdozer. Also, points to whichever of them managed to knock Dead Metal into the pit. Nothing against the death-scorpion, it's just funny whenever people freak out about the House Robots getting whupped.
The Gauntlet is ridiculous. Does anyone think Ivanhoe (which got through thanks to a shove from Matilda) was more deserving than Talos, who put Dead Metal in the pit?
For series 2, GBH is a very competent robot and if the series didn't have the gauntlet and trial as a way of eliminating robots *again* then who knows how far GBH could have gotten. Nice to see the origins of the Ivanhoe team, who would go on to make the memorable Splinter who we know was... trashed by Hypno-Disc in a later series! Kill Dozer was remarkably competent too, a decent design which could have done better if the house robots hadn't intervened in their fight. The house robots in general had too much freedom in these early series, so it's good that they were cut back to the corners and the gauntlet stage removed in later series, which made the competitor designs matter a lot more and removed the whole "all you need to do to win is just push them into one of the sides and have the house robots win the fight for you".
So here's Heat J of Series 2. Unfortunately, this episode has proved to be a pain overall. As well as things like the frame rate consistency and ghosting issues, the source quality also isn't great - the reason for that? I do not know, because Diotoir provided the episode again, so it should've been crisp. Hope it's still acceptable for you guys though. I'll get the rest of these episodes uploaded sharpish, but I can't promise any consistency on the quality. Nevertheless, thanks to Diotoir for providing the episode, you can check out him and his recent Robot Wars-related project: Crowned Classics here - th-cam.com/channels/7gL0e6qWllf1htU2al39cQ.html.
Man the house robots had too much of a free reign early on, it sucks that they decided some outcomes when they only really should have been an obstacle
They definitely had too much freedom with the first two series, mostly down to the arena layout imo. Moving them to just the corners rather than the *entire* sides made it a lot fairer and made them less intervening. Allowed the competitors to actually fight rather than go with the tactic of "Push to the side and let the house robots win the fight". Though when the competitor robots are as basic and, for the most part, not that great in these early series, having the house robots tip the fight is sometimes the only way to get a decisive outcome. Also doing away with the gauntlet phase to focus on the fights as a form of elimination was a lot better imo.
I know this is probably me but every time I hear Talos's intro, it sounds like Johnathan Pearce says "with two spikes to r*pe," I really hope that is me just hearing things because if he did say that, that is almost as bad as when he said, oh I'll save that for series 2 heat K.
Bingeing this nostalgic series in 2024. Thanks for sharing.
Same bro
Series 2 is charming in its own way. The robot are definitely archaic but it kinda adds to the charm

Mmm helped out Ivanhoe at least twice

I think that is what he says, I assume in the sense of violently plundering. A bit unnecessary, of course.
