Just based on the Director`s interview.
In Korea, there is an old superstition that every each area have a ghost who protects the people of the village. They call it "Tochack-ryung" means ghost who stick in the land. So the woman here is a kind of good ghost who is fated to protect the village. She wanted to protect her village from that evil spirit. This is why she was wearing victim`s stuff like cloths, hairpin.
The shaman is connected to the old japanese man. He is also a japanese. A scene where the shaman is changing clothes, he wore the same underwear as the japanese man. Why shaman does all of this is because he tricks the people of the village and earn money through it.
Japanese man is possessed by an evil. Sometimes he is just a normal person and that’s why he was crying at the cliff scene.
While the shaman is performing the ritual, the Japanese man is also suffering - Director said it in the interview, that wasn’t the same time event. The director wanted to make the audience a little bit confused.
Anyway this movie has a quite simple story line but the director cut and slice some scenes and mix it together and that’s why it makes this movie harder to understand.
Based on Director Hong-jin, Na`s interview

    What I got:
1: The Japanese Man is the Devil.
2: The Shaman is a servant of the Devil (willing or unwilling)
3: During the exorcism, the Shaman was doing nothing but irritating the girl/demon, passing off his ritual as legitimate.
4: The Japanese man is harmed in his own ritual because the Angel is outside his house, hexxing him back, as seen when he awakens on the ground.
5: The Devil is frightened when he leaps from the mountain because The Devil is afraid of the Angel, not his chasers.
6: The Shaman, when he sees that he and his Devil Master are up against an Angel, tries to place all the blame on her and cast doubt on her motives to have Jong-Goo turn on her, which he does. In this case, The Devil succeeds.
    - the raven in the jar was a ward to keep away the Devil. The Shaman senses (or is told where to look) and removes it
    - the ravens feast on the Devil's dog to warn and intimidate the Devil, sending a sign that the village is being protected.
    - The Devil was photographing his "living" victims to capture their mortal souls before they were infected with demonic souls and died, and then photographing them again when they were fully consumed by said demonic souls and "dead" to reanimate the demons within and sow destruction.
    - In the end, evil wins and good loses because of doubt and lack of faith.

    • @1792dt

they do exist in the same realm. I was born a christian, i've been in a room where at a christian retreat where 2 people were laying hands on someone as they were praying for them, the person being prayed for swears up and down that because they were prayed for, they were healed of this pain in their back that had been going on for years.
In another incident, one of my good friends is buddhist from Thailand, very devout to his religion. They have a shrine for the "house guardian". One time I was at my friend's house I saw "someone" assuming it's my friend walk into another room with the lights off. I followed "him" into the same room and asked him what's taking him so long to turn the lights on. No answer. As my eyes adjusted to the dark room I noticed I was standing right in front of one of the shrines. I ran out of there and my friend was in the kitchen and i told him what happened and he said "oh that's the house guardian" very nonchalantly.

Interestingly enough, the Bible affirms the existence of other cosmic beings besides the Most High. They're framed as selfish, capricious, deceptive and just overall malignant. They are also completely powerless before God/Jesus.
And as you'll note in other folklore/religions/mythology, they often openly acknowledge the self-interested nature of their own pantheons.
God is also demonstrated as not only the most powerful of all of these beings as well as the Creator, but also as honest, trustworthy, compassionate, forgiving, just, righteous, patient, merciful and extremely loving. As you'll notice, though, He's very much in a league of His own and doesn't like His creation walking around acting as though He is rivaled by any other

This movie gets alot of acclaim, and i did enjoy it. However it find it odd people are accepting a story thats only a mystery because key details are left out for it to be pure speculation.
And the biggest offender of this is that the father sinned for killing the Japanese man... your asking an audience to guess far too much for that sequence to be true, because the evidence presented by the movie is that the Japanese man is possessed or a full fledged demon from the beginning.

The woman in white is the evil spirit as stated clearly by the shaman towards the end, she's wearing the possessions of all the victims BEFORE they get possessed. But everyone believes she must be innocent because she's cute, wears white, and has some biblical references thrown in(a usurper religion in korea btw, not some universal symbol of benevolence). So the shaman and demon work together. Demon collecting souls, shaman (who probably sold his soul at some point, with the changing from all white to all black clothes scene) raking in the dough for fake rituals that actually help not hurt said demon. The good, land spirit is left unable to go beyond the territory she protects to stop them from "traveling" and doing this to another town or avenge the people from her town. This actually would've been great as an after credit scene but then it's fun to piece great movies together and God knows it was already long enough.

The part about selling his soul makes sooooooo much sense as we see in the movie the Shaman wears expensive/namebrand clothes, he got paid a pretty penny for performing the ritual, and the grandmother heard about him saying he is well known. Meaning he sold his soul for money and fame perhaps.

The whole shot at 1:25 has a lot going on. Notice the left side is lined with these withered trees, and dominated by taller trees in the background. Notice how the left side of the road has horizontal breaks almost like a ladder. Notice the right side is lined with electric poles. And also notice the symbols. The pole on the left side is like an upside down cross, and the right side's electric poles are crosses.
What this scene tells you is that the devil's work is done here; the trees are withered. So he walks across the street, and utilizing humanity's technological advancements, he'll climb jacob's ladder corrupting and destroying the doubtful to spread his evil.
The thing that's so weird is the shot at 2:07. It doesn't even make logical sense if you compare the 2 shots. She's not even staring at the direction at which the car is driving towards. She's staring at the direction at which the ladder begins (or ends?). The side she emerges from is a union of both sides from the previous shot, it has the ladder, the upside down cross-like pole, the electric poles, and withered trees. On top of that if we're supposed to be viewing this shit as her looking ahead of the car driving away, then the upside down cross-like pole should be showing us what's on the signs if it was properly oriented.
Dunno why the second shot makes no logical sense. Why do you think this is?

There's definitely some symbolism, like how the mother and kid are sheltered/protected. The shaman drove by towards the side close to other people, but the antagonist was able to cross it because the shaman was willing to offer a 'ride.' The antagonist had this smug face as he disengaged, staring at the 'older man' who seemed to know what was up. About her position, it seems the shot emphasizes she is there to stay to protect the living, whereas both stops are temporary positions. A representation of good and bad spirits and humans, and a spirit that could possibly stuck in the living.

I wonder what the old man represents, at first he seems almost as an oblivious entity that the woman can't see but that would bring into question who he is to protect this specific person and we already know there's 1 protective spirit in this village. So I wonder if the confrontation through gaze was more of a display of faith, we know that the movie revolves around faith, doubt and corruption. So to me this might be the an older man with strong faith starring at the "devil" with defying eyes (unlike the young priest who, despite the proof of the devil means proof of god, was fearful when he should of had faith in gods protection.) unfazed and knowing that he stares at a fake smile, evil tempting a young girl. Maybe it's an older man as well, because the older generations had more faith than modern, more atheist, generations.

The two shamans are good. someone said that the japanese man was innocent and not evil until one time he falls from a hill getting run over by the truck. Thrown down the bridge. There was no shaman around to take a picture and perform a cleansing ritual to prevent it from being posessed by an demon/evil spirit. Il Gwang the other shaman didnt realize the japanese man was dead. Then the japanese man's dead body is completely able to be posessed since no cleansing ritual has been performes to that body. In the end you see him slowly transform into a demon because its the demon that possessed the dead body of the Japanese man. The woman in white originally wanted the Japanese man dead so she can posess the body with an evil spirit/demon. Her wish came true, the man got completely posessed.
The woman in white caused jong goo's family to die. Since the daughter named Hyo-jin had got no more protection for posession since the Japanese man already died and got posessed by demon. So the evil spirit inside Hyo-Jin completely took control of her, looking at the knife, stabbing the entire family.
Another thing the Japanese man did was to perform a cleansing ritual of the dead body in the crashed car. He failed the ritual since both them got interrupted. The dead body became posessed and turned into zombie. It bites people but it wont turn them into zombie too because its only a posession of a demon.

When I saw the shamans car. I was literally shocked. Hanging ending but this clip was really getting interested. I understand it now.

That look the Japanese gives to the Shaman makes it feel like he is more of a pawn and is reluctant to do the things he is doing.

It would have been so much easy if the woman in white gave all information with more clarity rather than sounding suspicious. Couldn't convince the main character to stay

Well we would all have done the same. I would say that the woman was pretty blantant. Said the two men are together , or that the old man was a ghost. The thing is, good spirits dont usually have the capability to do more than that. As they say, they may show the path but you are the one who has to walk. Similarly here, the policeman had to make the decision as to who to believe. She did even say to have faith in her. It was on him to trust or not to trust.

More like "deleted scene" than alternate ending.

Ah okay pucha buti nakita ko to. Kase it really made me believe that the girl in white was the real protagonist in the original movie cause it feels like she's delaying the MC. Pero it made clear that she's really trying to help. And i go back to the original ending and i noticed that, the one who is photographing the live ones is the Japanese and the one who's photographing the dead ones was the younger shaman.

Why had the Japanese old guy a picture of the young priest dead ( and with a piece of his cheek removed following the zombie attack ) ? How could the Japanese man have a picture of events that happen in the end of the movie ? Is his camera going back and forth in time ?
