I've been welding pipe for 30 years and remember my first weld test. I was nervous as hell until I started the test then all the nervousness went away and passed with no problem. Just take your time and watch for undercut and porosity. Good luck.

Back off on your arc gap, let it spray more , instead of having to oscillate as much. Every time you oscillate it makes a ripple in the bead and leaves a oscillation weave pattern,, which you do not want on your cap beads it will be easier to keep the beads perfectly straight, and carry even passesand you won't be able to put a hair between the ripples ,it will be smooth. You must flush the pipe properly to have a even cap!!! Favor the top bevel ,because gravity will be present always when you change a solid to a liquid form. Establishing a desired bead width and sustain it throughout the entire bead,each cap bead. Puddle Width! Rod angle ! If you're beads aren't straight when it's molten ,they won't be when it solidifies! Fill the top 1/ 3 of the pipe more than the bottom 1/3 ! .Especially 12:00 vs 6:00 ! Your goal is to be able to look at the pipe from a side view ,and the amount of weld metal on the cap should be the same ! (TOP& BOTTOM) All the way around ! Leave the fill lower to cap on bottom, flush it more on top! ( It will sag more on bottom ,and flatten on top.) Then you don't have to Cary as much metal on the cap. The less metal you Cary on the cap beads, the easier it is to keep uniform! Makes alot smoother,straighter, even cap. Remember on the cap beads, let each bead overlap to the peak ,or the crown of the last bead. and just below the bevel on the second cap bead. The second cap bead should be the heaviest,, and the last bead should be as wide as the exposed, ( first and second beads that are left exposed.) In other words, all three beads are the same Exposed Width ! Keep your main focus on the bottom edge of the puddle, and your beads will be perfectly straight. Once you establish your desired beads width, watch the sides of your puddle ,and keep it the same all the way around ! Never worry about travel speed !Flushing the top a little more before you cap will help the entire weld to look the same and have the same amount of weld metal all the way around, instead of being heavy on bottom and flat on top. 35+ years experience. Practice makes perfect! WELD WITH CONFIDENCE!!! Good Video !
Well he’s explained it very good, and my hat goes off to him, and just love the yank’s accent. But why’s he using two hands, instead of one. Where I served my apprenticeship (Babcock & Wilcox) in Scotland, our instructor said it was always better to use one hand only, and used to poke your hand with a rod, if he caught you. I also thought his cap was quite rough, as his beads on cap was to far apart. But then, it depends on the quality of the rods. We were spoiled with Babcocks own rods, and they were brilliant for an immaculate finish on the cap. Murex vodex, was another good finish for inspection. 🏴👍🥳
yep Alumium and authentic steel are another they act like 2-8x video forward :D when going heavy iron cast but not for tig lol. best welders are around 50+ because they have live experience. My teacher was 50-60 but despite his age he came to show in real life and took 2 minute to get mask and show stick or tig or mig, or gas, no matter. 141,111,135, 311- . Tig need steady hands and 2 pair of them other need speed and a lot of knowledge. i Calculated if serious 6 progress in 1 year or if very good at 1 maybe 6 months to learn them all. Perfection years to come but acceptable weld.
I thing don´t give up. If too repetive on fails try thin pipe for a change to see how root pass when arc length is ideal and no risk to keep it too long like multiple welds and something other then go back to pipe welding ( i tested on plate pa,pf,pc and pe after pipe 45 degrees felt really easy when struggling on them in the beginning). I did this 1 month in a row and was starting to lose a hope. Test what method works for you the best 2t/4t or minorc. With 2t on off from button be carefull to move arc on side before shutting to avoid hole and fail on certification( don´t stop in middle of weld, stop on side and go back to give it protective gas) . On 4t / constant heat is issue and gravity pull weld downfards. On minorc you can go hot and cold when needed but make sure cold is cold enough when doing the weld after bridge on down position when starting. For me technigue that you keep filler rod in normal angle 30 degrees after bridge and pushing it while moving it forward while following with tig helped. Need to keep 2-3 pressure on bottom compared to roof welding. When filler feel sticky but you can push it through it was right for me. I know there was too much heat when it goes pass the melt weld like nothing so i stopped and let it to run cool 2-10 seconds and tried to keep up filler rod and tig in pace. After bottom i started to just move normally keeping arc length minimum on root pass while constantly pressing filler rod to meld weld while moving forward and stopping when melt out of control to cool it down. Just got 6g pipe certification with root and hot pass on 4.5 millimeter tube. You can do it and instead of regret push through the wall you will hit. u realize oh it was this easy afterwards and muscle memory follows almost livetime. Don´t give up and don´t get stuck on same technigue if not close. We are inviduals. Experts can go it through with automatic but it need perfect timing on startm otherwise very easily undercut. 1.6 Tungsten 50-150 amp. 2.4 150-240 amp. smaller arc area on thinner tungsten. On 2nd weld if seeing other that shiny weld brush dirt of especially on tig and take a coffee rather than running it too hot to keep hot pass nice and under control. if u are using 2mm filler rod use next size for cap when starting and it is ideal. Make it to look like horseshoe and keep it between pipes when tacking. On 2nd tack you can keep it or not but make sure width is a little bit larger because heat brings it backwards. Root pass 94 amps and for filler i used 85 amp to keep it cool to avoid meld and did more spreading move. When doing certification make sure you are under limits of wps.
Why first TIG Welding -fill it with a gap of 3 mm - 3 pass TIG welding and then ARC standard welding for fill up the gap with ARC 3 standard + [welding strength] instead for completely all the pipe union with TIG welding , it’s a question of weldings quality or the strength pressure proof of the pipe requires ? Another question -always follows start welding clockwise and finished clockwise it’s very important ? 0r start anti clockwise and finished anti clockwise or it doesn’t make difference ? It's good to have the opportunity to learn and ask about welding. I am learning welding (6g arc). What's your suggestion to avoid pinhole on the overhead or 6'o clock position?? And is it worldwide allowed to use any support tool while welding (like, you use that tool on your pipe) in a test?
I would like to hear your thoughts on 6010 vs 6011 rods in the SMAW process. Why the 6010 is almost exclusively used for root passes, and why not 6011, because to me there is a big difference between the two rods in the way they weld. The biggest drawback of 6010 being its need for a much higher open circuit voltage.
ive used 6011 for root then 6013 for fill and cap its dependant on job spec and the welder in question im from the uk and 6011's are often known as fleet rods the higher penetration can help for the root, also as we run ac power over here its more suitable to use on a normal machine or we would have to switch polarity for the 6010's

Hi Just wondering where i can find the levels of welding for tests?I see a lot of 6G welding on you tube is there more like say 7G etc? and does the basic testing start at 1G.I'm 30seconds into the video and I like this guy already.Oh and is the tests the same in Australia as in use the same terms like 6g or is it called something else?
let me help you the number is "position" and the letter G means groove, there is 1G 2G 3G 4G 5G 6G, usually test are done in 6G because doing it at 45* degree you weld in all positions in one, so they can test your skills to do it all in one pipe. Hope I help you
Looks like 12 millimeter from 6 to all above certification. Filler rod looks like 2.5 millimeter minimum . 80 amps downline to 2.0 so perhaps 100 amps minimum for 2.5 filler rod. arc is under control so using lowest possible amperage. 120 amperage or more i would say. cOULD Run hotter but faster and harder to control. You easily notice if too thin rod or thick. thin need to fill too much and thick won´t melt at all ruining the weld with your heat that you need for melting the filler rod. He said on video 125-160 amp for hotpass.
Remember kids you aren’t a cool welder unless you wear the silly welders cap. The wire wouldn’t be trash and you wouldn’t have to cut it off if you left it in the gas coverage for a couple seconds.
Another question, how long do you think an 80 cubic inch tank would last of argon and helium mix? And isn't that's what the best to use, which I was told 75% argon and 25% helium oh, is this correct? I was told that this makes the weld a smoother flow weld than straight 100% argon. Thanks
Not the TIG welding. Use only Argon on tig. You think of Mig (compact tubular wire + gas sleeve. You can use argon on mig on everything, but as you say argon mix is better, but only on steel. But when you weld nobler steel as stainless, argon is best. And but when you weld Mag (filled wire with strokes for welding protection + gas) you only use argon mixture also on precious materials.I think argon costs more, but not sure? On tig you have the cape 16 liters makes 80 cubic inc 2 hours and 6 min not quite safe on this rain piece inc and millimeters is nonsense.

clockwise or counter, doesn’t matter. just never tig downhill.
So are you able to switch to different size 7018 3/32 to 1/8 rod for the cap? Or what do you recommend.
