It’s worth going back to Season 1 Episode 4 and Ed’s conversations with Izzy and Stede. He was already on the edge then “Death? Haven’t tried that yet” and “ever feel like you’re treading water waiting to drown?” This doom spiral didn’t come out of nowhere. If anything, Stede gave him a temporary happy blip.
Yeah, I think part of it is that Ed already had a boat load of self loathing, even in s1. Think of ep 6: "I'm not a good person, Stede. That's why I don't have any friends." And ep 8: "You were always gonna realize what I am." Most of his life he's learned to be ashamed of aspects of himself (shame about his class, his draw towards nice "frivolous" things, killing his father, etc.) And he leaned to hide those so as not to be judged and rejected for them. Part of that was to create the mask of Blackbeard, hiding those parts of him from judgement and rejection away from view behind it. But as the relationship developed, Stede slowly coaxed out the Ed underneath it all, with acceptance and reassurance, the sentiment of "see, someone can see the real you and love you and not reject you or judge you." Which is why when Stede left without saying anything, it hit Ed in the most vulnerable bruises and he assumed it was because of him. Because why wouldn't he? Even though Stede leaving had everything to do with Stede's own unresolved shit and nothing to do with his feelings for Ed. But for Ed, it seemed to confirm his worst fears about himself: that someone like Stede couldn't ever truly love someone like him if Stede knew who Ed was as a person under it all. Ed had slowly and cautiously and painstakingly taken off his armor bit by bit and, from his POV, he was standing there vulnerable for possibly the first time in his life...and he runs directly into a knife. Precisely what he'd been trying to avoid by putting on that armor in the first place. Because deep down he still believes his unmasked self deserves to be stabbed. That kind of wounding almost hurts worse that the initial ones, because you take a chance on someone actually proving that self-loathing voice wrong, that maybe you aren't so awful after all, and then they do something that seems overwhelmingly to actually confirm that. And for Ed it sent the message: you really are unlovable, otherwise he wouldn't have left. And how stupid are you that you might have thought otherwise. And ofc he has no idea how to cope after that except what has worked in the past: bury the hurt and fear and self-loathing under the mask of a brutal pirate. That way no one dares hurt him again because he can hurt them worse--because he's so full of pain it spills over and hurts his crew who don't deserve any of it. The greater the pain, the harder he's now leaning into that coping to run as far away from the "vulnerability" he associates with being hurt again, with feeling unlovable again. He doesn't know how to deal with it healthily because he still associates the healthy way (ex: going through grieving and getting communal support in ep 10) with Stede suddenly leaving and assuming the worst, and then the ensuing reinforcement of the rejection and judgement from Izzy. This arc/aspect of the show always resonated really deeply with me, because I know by heart the steps of this fucked up dance he's dancing from personal experience. But I'm lucky have access to therapy and modern psychological research to help break that cycle ✌ thanks for coming to my ted talk
I totally get this because I thought the same! But then I went back to s1, and - that shit actually gets really dark. There are a few cute episodes in the middle, but hooo boy is there trauma.
Ed was already very on this path before he met Stede, remember that Izzy said he was crazy or something? Stede was his light in the dark, his possibility for a new life and a purpose and losing him is like losing that last chance
I lowkey love how messy everything became, it’s so interesting. I don’t really like how everyone blame Stede who also got issues and his own problems, almost every character is dysfunctional and needs something in their life, Ed never experienced love starting from his father and stede always though he’s never enough :( also it breaks my heart seeing ed passively seeking death and sabotaging everything that’s important to him. They all need to overcome their traumas and heal together 😢
But it’s 3 months of spending 24/7 together with someone you’re obsessed with (they were both fascinated with the other). That can be a lot and feel way deeper than the traditional 3 months of knowing someone. Not saying it’s healthy, but I get the strong connection in such a short time
I think the crew chose to save Izzy because they knew that as the first mate, he was the one taking the brunt of ‘the krakens’ (Blackbeards) violent moods. That’s his job. Report to the captain and try smooth things over when it goes wrong. To be a middle man between the captain and crew. They clearly knew what was going on behind the scenes and that Izzy was being severely abused. He may have caused this problem, but he more than payed for it.
A couple things about the final scene. Ever since Stede left him, Ed has been breaking up all the other couples on board. Lucius and Pete, Oluwande and Jim... then finally trying to make Jim and Archie fight to the death. Also, I saw a theory once that Ed brought Jim (a member of Stede's crew and an assassin) aboard at the end of season one because he was hoping they'd kill him.
I agree! He knows Jim was on stede's ship, he doesn't think they'll kill Archie. But I'd if he pushes Jim far enough, they'll probably kill *him*. And he's not wrong, it's Jim with the cannonball at the end.
Honestly to me, ever since the last episode of Season 1, I've interpreted Ed as bipolar. He went into a depressive state due to things being a daily grind before he met Stede, and it opened him to be vunerable, to think plans through, to be nice to others, and to cry about his own past actions. But then he got triggered into mania, which is why he is now being reckless, making impulsive decisions that harm others, and seeming to have no conscience. However it's not 100% clear which stage is the mania and what's the depression. Because obviously he is s****dal now, and before he was euphoric about life and excited about little things.
Ed has been passively suicidal since season 1. He brought up dying, he was still making risky moves that somehow "worked out" and when he met Stede he saw a different perspective in life, and it made him realize it was worth living. He met more people, and he seemed to have more of a support system. He was also interested in Stede before he even met him because he felt like his life was boring and had no substance. When Stede left it, all came back, and he didn't know how to cope. So, he went from I don't even know what to do with myself anymore to aggression and resentment at everyone. Izzy was right though; Ed was scared to do it himself no matter how much he wanted to and in the end was willing to go down with ship regardless of what happened.
Showrunner (David Jenkins): Ed’s never been in love and he’s like a teenager facing his first breakup (except with the power and notoriety of Blackbeard)
Yes Stede left Ed but I do not blame him and I don't like how people blame him for Ed "wild" behavior, he was coping like normal person: crying, eating, asking for the company of a friend, then doing group activities until Izzy told him "better unalive than gay"
Honestly I also blame Izzy for Stede leaving, a bit. If he hadn't sold them out to the British, stede could have realized his feelings on a normal timeline outside of "I just gave up my entire life for you. Btw I'm in love with you. Did you know you're gay? Let's run away and leave behind everything you know!" I'm just saying, that's a lot for a man who has no idea how to process emotions.
@@amberburch152 maybe he is but I think even in that scenario Stede would have left sooner or later just because of the guilt he felt. Izzy as a character and how this fandom sees him is so fascinating to me, people just forget everything he did because Ed shot him in the leg.
21:43 Alright I need to have a heart to heart too, my day’s been good tbh nothing special, I’m just stressed cause I’m going to the hairdresser tomorrow and I'm scared my new cut will look bad. Tho I'll get to see my friends so I have mixed feelings abt it lol!
Amazing, absolutely loved this reaction 😂 we all went through the same emotional rollercoaster with this ep but its one of my favourites! Acting was superb
Yeah. This show continually puts you through an emotional wringer. One of the few shows that leaves me exhausted. Huge mix of happy and sad. It really is an unexpected thing. Lucius's death and reappearance still wrenches my heart back and forth.
"Fun" fact for extra *emotional damage* Ed wasn't wearing Stede's black cravat last episode (the one he kept after they switched clothes back in 1x4 🥲) but he put it on when he was either going to goad the crew into killing him or the storm would get all of them. He wanted to have a piece of Stede with him when he died 😭😭😭 Anyway, I'm still in shock how pretty Ed is this episode when he's talking to Frenchie, almost like a Disney princess 😅 And yeah, Jim's new haircut looks so good on them. Btw, the woman with them is called Archie, I haven't seen anyone else mention that. Next episode has one of my favourite moments in this whole show, I can't wait for the next reaction 💜🏳️🌈🏴☠️
This s2 was promoted very well, with a high trailer and everything, but when they released this s2 it was like more quantity of quality and little relativity to the story and on top of that the story was made very rushed that many things were left that at the beginning was going to be 10 chapters but they cut it by 8 more chapters due to budget issues and they eliminated several scenes that would have been good for this s2 and with an ending that makes you think "was this part necessary, why?!" and many had great expectations for this season with that trailer they released, it was clear that it did promise what it was going to deliver, but when it aired, many did not like how it turned out, there was very little support for this that the show was cancelled. idea of a s3, some tried to save it by approving s3 but it didn't have as much support in s2 so the development of the entire series was very rushed and very difficult.
Wondering whether you'd consider adding a tier to your Patreon somewhere between Discord Only and full reactions to everything. Like maybe you can pay to see reactions to specific shows or something. Just a thought.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, this is not all Stede’s fault. Yes, he handled some things very poorly and should have been open and talked to Ed about his feelings and what was going on, so he does have a little responsibility for how things turned out. However, Ed is a grown-ass man and how he handles his hurt feelings is his own responsibility. No one was putting a gun to his head forcing him to push Lucius off the ship, to shot Izzy or terrorize his crew. That was all him. And yeah, Izzy kinda pushed him into it a little, but going by his reaction this is bad even by Blackbeard-standards. Both Ed and Stede have boatloads of issues and they should have dealt with them in a more healthy way, but it is hugely unfair to put all the blame on Stede’s shoulders and say that Ed’s rampage and spiraling into depression, self harm and abuse towards others is his fault. We are not responsible for the reactions and actions of other people, at least not to this extent. And it’s kinda sad that Zheng seems to be the only one to acknowledge how Stede must be feeling about everything and the turmoil he must be going through.
@@amberburch152 No yeah, I’m not saying Izzy doesn’t have a part to play in all of this. And he knows it too. He wanted Blackbeard back and got the worst possible version of him, considering how long they’ve known each other and this is where is Izzy draws the line. However, Izzy wasn’t there when Ed pushed Lucius off the ship to drown. And by the looks of how Ed is talking to him and how he’s running things, it doesn’t look like Izzy has a very big say in how things are run on the ship. I’m not saying Ed is fully to blame for how things turned out. Stede, Izzy and Ed all have some responsibility for all that’s happened. What I meant was that it seems very unfair to say that Stede is fully responsible, which Lucius implies in this episode, as do a few others.

Commenting before watching. This is the roughest episode of the season. It's all uphill from here. You got this
Are you just ignoring the existence of the finale? Because I personally wouldn't call that uphill. 🤷🏻♀️
When I first watched this episode there was a point where I had to pause for ten minutes just to cry it out.
