I carried a small camera with me at work (electrical lineman) and took pictures of the people I worked with as they were working. When I retired, I actually had a man, who was teared up, tell me that the only record of him doing his job of over 30 years, were the three or four pictures that I had given him.

That must've been interesting! You must've had some great views when you were working. Thanks for commenting!

Great advice! When my husband passed away suddenly, I was so glad for all the photos I had. I made small albums for each grandchild with pictures of each of them with him. They were a big hit with the family.

Thank you, Brooke. Sorry for your loss. Photos can be a great comfort. They were for me when my parents passed away.

Good topic. I prefer to print photos but most don't anymore. One of my retirement projects is to go through them and put in order. Not a simple task but worth it. Oh and a good idea is to put names and dates on the back. Many of my Mom and Dad's old photos don't have that.

    • @JamesMurphyYT
      @JamesMurphyYT  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Janet. The lack of names and dates is a problem. When mum was alive, she always knew that, but over the 27 years she's been gone, there's a lot that I've forgotten.

I have been a ‘keeper of memories’ for most of my life. I am a professional photographer . People say that they will never forget this moment or never forget what the view looked like…but they do. Photographs bring back memories, they capture that moment in time. I’ve got boxes and boxes of memories. My father took many silent movies of me and my brother and sisters. Even movies before we were all born. If my house was burning, I would go back and get all the photographs and movies. Yes photographs are important, you are so right! Thank you for reminding me. I’m happy to see you are feeling better. (I love your lava lamp!)

Hi Dian. I digitised all my photos at a high rate and have them.backed up on hard drives. They alone with my music backed up on hard drives would be the first things I grabbed too.
One of my regrets is not being in enough photos with my friends and family through my not wanting to have my photo taken.
A photo may only take a second to click the button, but there's a whole world of memories in each one.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

Great advice. I digitized my family photos and gave each of my 4 kids a memory stick. They may not look at them much now but as their lives slow down a bit I bet they'll enjoy having them.

I'm pretty sure they will too. I've done the same with my boys, but sadly, my youngest told me recently that he can barely remember his grandparents anymore.

I’m also sorry that I don’t have more photos from my youth - but I’m glad there was no video to capture all the family memories in such realistic detail. A photo of a lost loved one is great - but I don’t want to feel that my mother or sister are in the room with me because it’s just too painful.

Hi Damian. I know what you're saying about video. I have video of my parents and when I watch them I get choked hearing their voices. With photos I don't get that problem at all.

My father was a portrait photographer. He started me on a Box Brownie. I hated having my picture taken. I worked for, or met, a lot of famous people in the space of 10 years (1964-1974) but I'm not in photos with them. Someone sent me a photo of myself with Bobby Seger (before he became Bob Seger with the beard) and I know exactly what we were talking about! Now, I don't care if someone takes my photo. (I'm in three shots from the Halloween party last week on the wall and I pointed them out!)
Also, I had a friend, Connie, who developed other peoples' photos. She hated summer. The company worked nights so you could get them 'overnight'/'next day' and they would sit there all night..."Sunset." "Sunset." "Sunset." Her advice was that all sunsets look alike after 40-50 years. She said, "When you go on vacation and you see something beautiful or funny or whatever, take two shots: The one you think you want and the one you think you will throw away." In other words, put who you are with IN one of the shots. And, years later, you will keep the one with the person. You will remember the trip that way.
But, I still think selfies are a bit overdone. LOL

That advice is so true - I'm a culprit of taking loads of landscape photos when we are out, but rarely do we take pictures of us! How mad is that?
Thanks for you comment as always!

Wonderful advice! My mom was the photographer in our family too and I have loads but I do need to go through them. I don’t have brothers or sisters so the cousins might be getting some photos whether they like it or not.😂You’re sounding better James!

Thanks for sharing, I am always telling my kids and my friends to take pictures and send to me. My daughter is pretty good at taking pictures of our grandchildren and sending to us since we live a little over 1100 miles one way and don't get to see them often. I have 2 close friends from high school that I keep in contact with and always tell them to take pictures and share. Sometimes they do other times they forget. Have a great weekend. 🙂🥰❤

Tia! 1100 miles one way! How do you cope? My sons are 200 miles away and I haven't seen either of them for a year as we can never seem to get the logistics right. They're always busy in their careers and we can't seem to match days with them.
When they were small, I wwas busy trying to rebuild our lives after I lost our business so didn't have enough time with them and now it's swapped. Talk about Cats In The Cradle mimicing real life.
Debz has gone to the South of France for a long birthday weekend with her daughters for some well-deserved R&R and I'm here looking for ideas for something to make for next week's videos!

These are the kind of vids I really enjoy. Personally, I've never liked to be photographed. I've never been photogenic. Too bad this won't let us share photos so you could see the one on my fridge. But I do enjoy looking at photos and pictures of other people and places. I love to see some of the creativity beind them, even some of the simple ones. Makes you wonder sometimes what's going through their mind when they are snapping them. But they all are catching a place and time in history. As mundane as some might be, it still reflects the people and the time. I do agree with your one commentor that its always best to try to write on the photos the dates, times and places. To future generations, it won't mean so much if there's no reference to it. I hate going through some of the old family photos and not knowing who the people are or where they are or how they relate to me.

    • @JamesMurphyYT
      @JamesMurphyYT  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I agree with you about the photos with annotations on the back. The collection of my Mum and Dads photos didn't have that on many. Mum used to tell me the stroies behind the photos. Sadly, I don't remember them all which makes it hard to label who they all are.
Just to let you know... TH-cam are adding community pages to each account and it won't be long before you will be able to attach photos to posts.
There's good changes ahead on the Communities tabs as long as people don't use them in a nasty way. I'm ping each page owner can monitor as delete as necessary, Thanks for commenting Tyler.

We’ve always taken lots of photos, but unfortunately for the past several years, they’re digital and we never think to get prints. We’ve gone through our older photos and sorted them out for each of our kids and given them to them. We also had old photo albums that we gave to our kids. My dad was always taking photos, and he and mom had many albums to pass on when they downsized as well. Years ago I started writing family memories and stories, with plans to add photos and make copies for grandkids, but I’ve never finished it. Maybe a winter project one day! Thanks for another good talk! ~ Deb ☕️🇨🇦

Your lovely video popped up & i decided to watch. I'm supposed to be ageing gracefully but I still ride a motorbike & travel Australia a few times a year. Im in my 60's (apparently) & am not going to stop now. I take pics all the time. Just uploaded a load of photos to my hard drive as I had over 16,000 on my phone. Im going to get some print & put a selection in large frames for each trip! Thanks 👍🏼 Best wishes ☺️

I'm 57. Apart from the dreaded school class photos (ALWAYS hated that ghastly day) there are NO photos of me. Always hated being photographed. Still the same today. I LOVE my privacy, and that includes having no photos of me. Especially in this purile, silly age of "social media" where idiots are now even posting photos of them having breakfast etc etc.
Guess what? NOBODY cares about you, except YOU. So STOP trying to be the centre of attention in the world when, in fact, you're only the centre of ANYTHING in your own empty mind.

I'm 54 years old and I couldn't agree more with you. The only photos of me are a very few at my own wedding, and a few more (literally two or three tucked away on a hard drive somewhere).
Today, we are surrounded with absolute narcissists - and narcissistic compassion at that.
      Social media fucking sucks.

I have to say that for the laugh of it I have taken photos of me eating large ice cream sundaes to send to my sons when I've overdone it.
I'd agree that most people are so concerned with themselves to be worried about anyone else.
But on the other side of things, it's nice when I get people tell.me that something I've said has helped them. I find that humbling.
I also see nothing wrong with you loving your privacy.
It what makes the world go round.
