This sounds like my problem. My 2004 E500 pops up the check fuel cap warning and has done it enough that the check engine light is in now. I replaced the fuel cap but it didn’t help. I enjoyed your detailed replacement of the valve. Thanks, Tom
You made it look so simple. I had a hard time putting in the replacement. The new valve need to be set on a certain position then press and turn. With so little room to work with. I had to take down the canister. It was a PITA. Is there a hose to connect to the shut off valve or is it supposed to be left open?
I have a non related question, I have a hard time filling my tank without the pump shutting off, could the charcoal canister hose be clogged? And if so, is the hose that comes down and goes into the canister the one that I should try to unclog? The one to the right of the valve. Thanks
Were you getting any fuel odors? I have a P0446 code on my 2004 E320. This seems like the first thing that I would attempt replacing, given that the odor is around the right rear area of the car if I fuel up past 3/4 tank. I did check to see if there were any leaks in the backseat area, and there were none. Also lifted the car and the rear area is dry.
@@dcfgarage I ended up replacing both the part you replaced and the charcoal canister. Charcoal canister had to be replaced because it was completely clogged. No more fuel smell (thankfully🙏🏻), but my check engine light still comes on. Honestly, at this point I don’t care anymore. I just wanted the smell to be gone.
So looking at your videos it appears that your E320 has something break every 30 days or so. Is that accurate? I have a 2003 E500 with 72 k and I want to know what I m in for. I am mechanically inclined and like to tinker.
I have a 2006 E500 and battling this P0446 issue. Just changed the purge valve, replace this shut off valve, new O-Ring and harness. The code still came back. I don’t know what else to do.
I’m not getting any codes but I’m having trouble fueling I can only fuel very slowly or the gas will come back out. Could this be the problem? Thank you
You checked the transmission code the second time. not the engine codes. That fault shows up in engine because it is part of the emissions not the transmission.
Same. 04 E320. I have that code. I also have a fuel odor around the right rear of the car if I fill the tank past 3/4 full. I had a shop look at it and they recommended replacing this part.
It’s the shut off valve and you’ll need new O-ring and harness. It’s located on the passenger rear side for the E500. Good luck taking off the valve it’s a pain. I had to take the canister off by placing a long flat pipe underneath the canister and push up. You don’t need to disable the bottom hose.

You may not be a professional my man but in my book you are very rational in troubleshooting in a professional manner and solving the problem.
Thanks!

Like most cars, sometimes you have to use just the hands and no eyes. The valve has just the electrical connection to open the vent
Awesome. You make things look easy. Curious what brand unit you’re using to detect the codes?
It's an Autel Pro MP808. Best price for a bidirectional OBD reader. Bidirectional = active testing
@@dcfgarage Yes I just got the exact same scanner. Its expensive but with 3 benz and 1 Volvo in the family and all 15+ years old, its a must have.

As far as I know once the canister is clogged you should replace it

You probably have a clogged charcoal canister
