I hadn't noticed it before, had to read TV Tropes to realize it, but Candie here got offended by being called "mister" instead of "monsieur", and that's probably what prompted him to want to rub his victory over Schultz in - getting both of them killed

Not only does he say "Mister", but he switches from saying "Monsieur Con-de" with a French accent to "Mister Candy" in an obnoxiously American accent. It's a VERY intentional barb that clearly pissed Candie off royally.

Yes plus the AufWiedersehen as well obviously. Both were too stubborn and couldn’t “let it go”.
Schultz stubbornly had to be a sore loser & obversely Candie had to be a sore winner.

This scene truly speaks to how important RESPECT is. Even after candy “won” got the money from the guys who tried to fool him, just the fact that dr.Shultz wouldnt give him the RESPECT to shake his hand (and rightfully so) that ate candy up, and threw it all away because he demanded unearned respect, that’s why I like the addition of him eating the cake “trying to have his cake and eat it too” got their money, scared them to death and still felt like you lost cause he wouldn’t shake your hand, cause he doesn’t view you as a person worthy of respect.

@@LucDutra92 i always thought that was the initial meaning behind his apology after he shot Candie. He knew that he probably got Django and his wife killed by executing Candie on the spot. Yet, from beyond the grave, Schultz still helped Django escape by telling Django to keep his first bounty in his pocket for good luck earlier in the movie, which was Djangos way of breaking free from the men transporting him to the slave mining company. this was a great fuckin movie man

      He was fed up
      he was disgusted

it is brutal world and Dr. Schultz was sick of it. I think he did not care to much for money from hunting bounties, he probably just wanted kill bad people, but eventually he got sick of it. Maybe also when he become friend with Django he realise black people are just people and that slavery world start to hunt him even more. Aslo his gun has two bullets I think in scene he used only one, he could kill or wound other guy if he wanted, but it seem he was just sick of this world.

Either the gun has only 1 or 2 at best rounds in the chamber ready to fire due to its tiny size for better concealment or that he realised he fucked up and there was no way out of this mess os he jsut accepted it his death knowing he did a good act and that he sticked to his morals.

The gentleman Dr. Shultz was wouldn't allow him to "lose". He wouldn't be able to live with himself and was perfectly fine going out on top. That little gun is a Derringer. I have one in 9mm and it literally hurts to shoot, plus it's single action. Still seems like he had enough time to cock the lever and fire at the guy with a shotgun. Derringers are also wildly inaccurate cuz of how short the barrels are

Despite manipulating him, Steven clearly loved Calvin.

    • @ollegrahn1937
      @ollegrahn1937 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      He probably did.
At the same time, i think Steven knew his life was essentially over aswell if Calvin died.
Steven had it good (well, as good as a slave could have, but you get the idea).
He worked for the Candie family probably for the majority of his life, and got to climb the ranks.
He also had the oppertunity to manipulate Calvin from a young age, making Calvin believe he really needed him.
The second Calvin got shot, all of that vanished.
While he was still spared from the most heavy duty, he was still a slave, and not a Free man.
That means he’d probably be sold to another owner.
Being old, and handicapped, chances are he wouldn’t survive long.
So seeing Calvin getting shot, he probably knew that his (relatively) good life was over, since his lifes work just died.
He probably cared for Calvin to some extent.
But i think he realizes that with Calvin gone, he’s not a man in power anymore, just a slave in other peoples eyes.

What pisses me off about this scene: From the time he shots Calvin to when "Mr. Pooch" shoot Schultz is a LONG TIME. 20 seconds at LEAST. PLENTY of time for Shultz to use his derringer, which has been shown to be a TWO SHOT on Pooch, the only other armed person in the room. Why on Earth didn't he shoot Pooch? Or why at least didn't Tarantino have Schultz shoot Calvin twice? He HAD that second bullet, but didn't use it… because reasons.

While I agree, it's unrealistic and frustrating (Shultz is a seasoned gunslinger), it is a part of his thematic resonance. I'll explain- it's mainly the name Calvin Candie. Candy. Shultz is a dentist, he says he "doesn't go for sweets". By shooting Calvin, he indulges, he breaks his tradition because he "couldn't resist". So he accepts his fate, spends his last moments apologizing, and receives his punishment.
By the looks of it he dies instantly, where Calvin had to endure what probably felt like a lifetime of humiliation in a few seconds when a bullet pierced his heart. Shultz looks like he died the second he got hit, dead by impact and ballistic force. Sure, he could've put a cap in Mr. Pooch but a big part of the second and third act is Shultz becoming increasingly guilty and discomforted by what he has to see of the slave trade, much of it being far worse than he'd assumed. That's why D'artagnan's death sticks with him, he's sickened and not used to it. I think it breaks him, in a way, where, instead of swallowing his pride and leaving with his life intact, he chooses to course-correct his previous tolerance for slave owners and indulge in a series of pissing contests with Candie, endangering everyone including Django and Hilde, until he can't take it anymore and he digs in. He intentionally humiliates Calvin and essentially calls him out as fake to a room of people with just some clever knowledge, not caring about the consequences.

I love this scene because the gun was attached to his right hand throughout the story, and he knew that whenever he extended that hand he’d have to shoot.
That makes the “if you insist” line so much more special.

The scene is an analog to the "I want your apology" scene in The Irishman. Although there is a deal already made (or there is an intenion for the deal to be made in The Irishman), one side still demands a symbolic gesture which the other can't give, and it ruins the deal. In this case though, Dr. Schulz put Django's and Hildy's lives in grave danger. It was their pure luck Mr. Butch turned his shotgun to Dr. Schulz instead of shooting instinctively from both barrels, perhaps killing both of them

To everyone wondering why Schultz didn't shoot Mr. Pooch, too, since a Derringer can hold 2 rounds at most
Keep in mind that a Derringer is wildly inaccurate and uses 9mm, which is why he's been using it at nothing but close range for the entire movie. He probably thought that he'd probably miss his shot at the range he was at, and even if it did hit, it wouldn't kill unless it was a direct shot to the head, which was unlikely.
Though he could have at least tried, he probably knew that he was as good as dead anyway if that Derringer was all he had on his person. He'd rather go out following his morals and with his pride intact.

Everybody commenting about, ‘why didn’t he shoot dude with the sawed off’ is missing the real question.
That being, did Schultz even think about the impact to Django and Hildy following his choice to shoot candie? Or did he not think it thru as he was consumed w hatred for candie?
Regardless, in a realistic world, Schultz was effectively signing their death warrants.. and probably grisly deaths at that. The two of them are left just standing there unarmed surrounded by several armed slavers, with many more outside, whose master just got gunned down.

You can see in Candy's eyes his pride was hurt, even with all that money. All Schultz had to do was just leave. Candy was conceited and prideful, but Schultz death may have been prevented. Well, just my opinion. That stunt could have costed Django and Broomhilda's life wich beats all the purpose of the journey.

Have you seen the film? Right before this scene, Schultz has a realisation that the so-called “superior” race is far more barbarous and cruel than he could have possibly imagined. He saw Calvin kill his slave with hunting dogs, and although let it pass as to not blow his cover, it stuck with him. Since the cover was blown, and Django’s relation to Broomhilda was unveiled, Schultz couldn’t control his hatred for Calvin and decided to kill him out of spite. He usually only kills for bounty, but this time, it was pure vengeance.

He tells Django from the beginning that he will help him out of his own pride, molds him in his own image by teaching him to be a killer and at the final moment when he has to choose between helping Django complete his life’s dream and personal pride he consciously chooses that.
