  • Season 5 Episode 7
    This week on Legendary Adventures podcast we take on the first mini-dungeon of the game, and the most infamous dungeon -- The Water Temple.
    Legendary Adventures is a Legend of Zelda playthrough podcast. I’m exploring the evolution of the Zelda game series by playing through each game in release order, excluding spin-offs and multi-player focused releases. Each season focuses on one game in the series. Legendary Adventures was conceived and launched as an audio podcast. I am making video versions of episodes as I am able. You can listen to all my episodes by subscribing to the podcast.

    Now that you mentioned it I can clearly understand the intention behind the Water temple. The main room is like a big diving tank you can explore with small tunnels to the side that leads to small sub-adventures. This Temple is intentionally build to keep Players in there for a long time and always go back to the Main room and embrace the beautify of it. The architecture the reflections from the water on the walls and the music that is extremely calming compared with the other dungeon themes. It feels like being in a bathhouse or thermal bath or something.

    Water Temple is a great dungeon. Back in 99, me and my brother spent about a week on it and the feeling of finally completing it was awesome.

      The only NEGATIVE Part of the Water Temple it Takes a Long Time!

    Yeah, I was stuck on the Water Temple forever on my first playthrough mostly because I couldn't figure out where a certain key was (it was the one you get by raising the water, and then sinking under a platform that rises with the water). It took me seeing a guy in my college dorm getting that key for me to understand what I missed. And I think that was the most frustrating part of the dungeon--how easy it was to miss a key and how much work needed to be done to collect a key you missed. This was really a dungeon where the biggest challenge was figuring out where all the keys were at.

    Was anybody else disappointed that Ruto ended up as a sage? How many other people wanted her and Link to get married?

    Just discovered you. You're doing a great job. Love the info during development. Fun fact, you can do the water temple before the fire temple. Just ignore all the promptings to go to death mountain and go straight for the ice cavern then the water temple. There is nothing in the water temple that is needed from the fire temple, if that makes sense. Keep up the great videos! :)

    I always have to backtrack somewhere when doing the water temple. Either it’s a skulltula or another damn key!

    Was wondering when the next installment was, glad to see the upload at the perfect time! Btw it is possible to beat Spirit Temple before completing the Shadow Temple if you get the hover boots and leave.

    • @MattWittherson
      @MattWittherson 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's actually possible to 100% the Spirit Temple without Hover Boots at all. That's my preferred dungeon order. I think I just grew up that way because of the Quest Screen's Medallion order. If playing Master Quest, I think there is at least one chest you can't access without Hover Boots, but, I also can't recall if it's a mandatory chest. Anyway, just thought I'd clear up a common Zelda misconception.

      I had no idea, thought you needed for the desert part. It would be interesting to see you do spirit temple first tbh.

    I thought I had finished this game. I reckonise this and some of the next episode, but not all of it.
    Most of the early stuff I did many times..
    It would be helpful if you created a playlist for each game, I managed to find a faulty order (see above) but TH-cam just plays in any order it feels like even if you have already watched it before.

    I don't recall thewater temple giving me THAT much troubel... barring the bombable wall, and the door underneath the block that floats up in the Water Temple's central tower. I think I actually caught that one but my brother, playing it at the time, didn't. And both of us missed the bombable wall so yeah- it's a temple with a lot of interesting ideas, but the execution could've been better... also this may just be me, but I felt a little cheated that we saw Ruto go in, even encountered her in the temple, but we never teamed up again to solve puzzles. It would've been so cool to be her partner again, but alas....
    Also the mini-dungeons here are kind of interesting, there's really only two of them in the game, no? The Ice Cave and The Well. Curious if there were plans for more and these two were the only ones that made it.

      You could count the gerudo training ground as a mini dungeon too. At least I do.

      Was so excited to play the water temple as an adult and beat it w/o any hints and made it all the way to the bombable wall and couldn’t figure that out. So stupid.

    I always do bonooru before any adult temples. You need him to full clear death mountain and first temple.

    Sorry to ask this in the wrong video - as I believe you mentioned it in the first one… there was a story of how the developers initially called Navi the “Fairy Navigation System”, but then shortened it to “Navi”. It’s been puzzling me, since I figured all concept work was thought about, spoken about, and written in their native Japanese. It just doesn’t seem obvious to me how a Latin-based word like “navigation” would ever play into the conceptualization of a fairy as more than just a tool, unless the developers very commonly converse at work in English. Any insight?

    • @Xetttt
      @Xetttt 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would assume they just used navigation as a loan word. Attack is also written in katakana in the japanese version.

    • @feyternerdworld
      @feyternerdworld 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Miyamoto, Aonuma and basically the complete Zelda cast are very world open and well educated people. You can see references to different cultures all around the world in the temples and locations in the game. Also Japanese car manufactures made GPS Navigation system known to a broad public in the 1990s so I guess the word itself should have been known for them.

    • @cryedoll
      @cryedoll 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Japanese word for GPS is ナビ prounounced as "nabi" short for navigation. It's a loan word which are common especially in the field of information technologies.

    This is a great series and I look forward to it weekly. But for OCD reasons, I’ll never forgive the fact you did the temples out of order.

    If players exposure to the water temple is from one of the later editions of the game with the quick swapping of the iron boots available that would remove one of the issues players had, the need to constantly enter the menu to enable and disable the iron boots is really annoying and significantly slows down the game.

      I had to do some background noise removal on this episode. I also edit all episodes well in advance of release. This entire season is complete for instance. I have been getting a lot of feedback about the audio, and I have learned some new things from that feedback, but what I learned won't be fully implemented until the next season (Majora's Mask). I need to edit and move on in order give myself time to play through the games and to maintain a weekly schedule.

    heres the thing: the water temple is bad on first playthroughs. really bad. you wander around aimlessly for hours, encountering dead end after dead end, never knowing what path you already walked. the central dungeon mechanic wants you to know the layout and rememebr stuff, yet it tries its hardest to confuse you.
    once you know the goal of the temple and have a basic understanding of the layout, it becomes infinitely more fun.
    thats why many people like it now. they dont remember the horrible first time, but the nicer second and third times.
    i will say however that the idea for the water temple is excellent. they just fumbled the execution badly.
