No thumbs up! Sorry. I really love and adore him & his play, but Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommy, Jimmy Page, Brian May were a bit more impressive on 6 strings way back then: all in all... Maybe the same with him as a singer ... I really love is voice (especially on this track, Bullfrog Blues or Shadow Play), but he ain't a 2nd Ian Gillan (he never had a "Child in Time"- a "Highway Star"or a "When a Blind Man Cries"-moment, asfo), he is no Robert Plant (with "Dazed and Confued" next to many others) or Dio (Over and Over, Stargazer, All the Fools Sailed away, etc.): Maybe he'd been the most talented musical universal genious of that time... But just like Phil Lynott or Gary Moore... That was the age of Superheroes, not of universal geniouses
This man exudes honesty, passion, grace, humility, and integrity in abundance. Unlike some of the blues tribute acts today, Joe Bonamassa springs to mind. Rory's the real deal
I'm from Dublin, but when you visit Cork it's like being home. They actually have a Rory statue and streets named after him. Love the place, and the big man himself.
saw him at the liverpool empire around 1978 , best concert i ever went to ,only filled in for a mate and went with another mate who had 2 tickets, wasnt my music then , unbeliveable night ,brilliant ,ears were ringing for hours
he was something else. very different, unique, good hearted, i think he finally wanted to settle down with somebody but in the end his music was his real lover. RIP bud
It is a testimony to the mans heart and grace that one of the finest songs on Agaìnst the Grain i😮😮s "Out on the Western Plains" great album then cassette, Then album again and finally DVD
+lamb998......Why the need for comparisons? I enjoy many varied artists (including early Van) but there's never a need or excuse to knock Rory. The man was an exceptional talent and a beautiful human being who played (brilliantly) for the love of it, nothing more, nothing less. He's also my all-time favourite and about as far removed from "shit" as you could ever hope to get. Might I suggest you give Rory a further listen if you're not familiar with his material?
I still watch all the old westerns. This would have made some theme song to any of them instead of Elmer Bernsteins musical pieces which were like in every old western...
Rory Gallagher played in the Gondel a little cinema in Bremen in a noble suburb Schwachhausen 1972 in the near of the headquarter of Radio Bremen with its worldfamous Sendesaal. He had given a phantastic live - concert to me as a seventeen I will never forget how modest he behaved although he already became a blues legend with his band Taste Listen to this genius especially On the boards where he is playing a lyrical saxophone like a jazz - star
there´s an awesome song dedicated to rory by marcel scherpenzeel blues band called "last wave". album was, i think, called "dark hills are calling". didn´t find a youtube video to that though... but if you happen to find the album anywhere, just buy it, it´s great!
This melody in combination with guitar sounding makes me cry - don't no why Has nothing to do with theme .... Love it to play with Bluesharp - G-Harp in Cross Position..key of D I think, this melody fits perfect to my World weariness - or somethin like that :-))))) Rory - Maybe you are a Million miles away - but always on my mind!
When I was a cowboy out on the western plain, When I was a cowboy, did a hit of window pane. Saw a million paisleys, falling like pouring rain. Come-a tie dye Hippie, come a tie dye Hippie, Hippie yay...!
Yeah, it's up there in my list alright, i think the one on the Cork Opera House dvd is the best i've heard, although the other version i've posted from '88 isn't bad either, i'd say it's better than this one
Dadgad tuning First chord G string 2nd fret all strings strummed 2nd chord G string second fret a string 3rd fret 3rd chord 2nd fret a string 2nd fret g string.
A lot of people do not know about Rory early life when he was a cowboy and hung out with the other cowboy Phil Lynott. Can you just imagine those 2 bad boys along with their pall Huddie William Ledbetter, Phil Lynott & Rory Gallagher out on the Western Plains robbing banks, smoking cigars, drinking cool beers, upsetting the local sheriff and his deputies, causing major havoc in town and have the times of their lives
Thumbs up if you think Rory is the best guitar player in the history!
43 thumbs in 7 years,is Rory hiding here!!!
Just ask the Man with the Golden Tan said.

Saw Rory live when I was a teenager in Dublin... It was my first ever live gig. I'm in my 60's now and remember it like it was yesterday. ❤
Si tu primer concierto fue uno de Rory , eres una persona afortunada , 👏 👏

Pure tone; both voice and guitar. Makes you believe he really did ride in the Old West..
Songs such as this are becoming lost gems. Those with discernable ears will lend them to these wonderful sounds. Thank you Rory 🙂
It's such a beautiful song. I used to skip past this, but now it's one of my favorites.
I'm from Dublin, but when you visit Cork it's like being home. They actually have a Rory statue and streets named after him. Love the place, and the big man himself.
Also a big statue of Rory in Ballyshannon...his birthplace.
I'd say that "Out on the Western Plain" was Rory's signature song.
That is a tough one to call, Best Rory Song is so hard to call. The man is a legend!
Heard an old interview recently with Brian May who said Rory G was his biggest and most important influence on guitar.🔥. RG = the real deal
Nah, Too Much Alcohol.
Rory does acoustic as well as his Strat!
He even plays the mandolin sometimes. See 'Hometown blues.'
Rory is the wizard of the guitar, may it be an acoustic or electric. He had the skill in his DNA.
I gotta disagree it was from his soul he put his heart and soul into it

Music was his first love ,he never sold out ,true to himself ,a real gent ,and decent human being ,an ARTIST.
Two great comments here
I was so lucky to see him twice back in the 70's. Once in support of the Irish Tour release and the other was Against the Grain (I think...)...
Great album that one!!
I was fortunate enough to see Rory three times, the first time he opened for Foghat and he absolutely blew me away.
Count Yourself Lucky !! Saw him Once ! Rod D’Eath.. at this tiny Armory - Blew Everyone Away ! Never Forget It !!
GREAT RORY!!!
