  • Cloud and Fog giants are 3rd and 4th in the rank of the Ordning of all Giants, the Cloud giants consider themselves the rulers of all giants in the to day affairs of their kind, as the Storm giants and Titans tend to keep to themselves so much.

I’ve recently been making a Cloud Giantess NPC who acts as a powerful hero for a nation of smaller humanoids. She is themed after Valkyries and rides on a purebred Roc who retains a lot of the power the original Rocs bred for the dragon war had. Basically a powerful giant heroine who eschews the typical role of Cloud Giants as powerful nobles focused with status and instead fills the role of a sky bound knight who can rival adult dragons.

In a campaign i ran involving cloud giants, i added a new critter. The Dewfeeder. Imagine a 2-3M tall ostrich with cassowary talons. Grazes on the mosses and lichens that tend to live on cloud islands. They also eat the occasional pests that find their way to the cloud islands(rats, pigeons, seagulls, urd)...
The giants love the meat of these birds, and keep herds of them as livestock.

@@AJPickett if you decide to include them, two things to note.
1:their plumage, which is a mix of white&grey acts as camouflage, and their claws and bite can transmit disease in many cases (45%chance a particular bird is a carrier)

Great video AJ. These cloud giants differ from my version a tiny bit... I'm a 2nd Ed dinosaur and I homebrewed where the rules did not exist yet. I actually had Cloud Giants (among other giants) capable of grabbing you and hurling you. If they grabbed you, you are now a bolder being thrown at another target. You are treated as said bolder except you can save for half damage on yourself. Player characters will have their melee fighters charge the giant while the archers and wizards stand back and attack from perceived safety only once. When the giant drops his maul and uses his two hand strikes to grab your Barbarian and your Paladin to smear the dangerously offensive magic-using wizard by hurling them at him, the party tactics and respect for the enemy changes drastically and instantly. They suddenly plan their offense and defense as if they are fighting something that towers over them in stature and physical power.
I'm also old enough to remember that "Fog Giants" were originally more evil-leaning Cloud Giants that lived in foggy areas... and they were still called "Cloud Giants". I think a couple AD&D novels changed that, I'm not sure.
I'm not gonna' lie... human/humanoid form Cloud Giants were pretty much used in every campaign I ran. My players almost always believed his/her special strengths and powers were magic item based.
Oh, and cloud castles/complexes in my campaigns are technomancy based, the pure magical form being long extinct as sections were swapped out over the centuries for such machinations. I did that to get certain Cloud Giants to interact with "ground-dwellers" more pro-actively. A "cloud" would descend to the top of the Technomancers' Guild spire while some trusted high-ranking guildsmen would go there to "research weather control"... where they are actually hired out to crawl within their machinery to fix & maintain the aging "new" gear.

Working my way through this playlist, and it sort of changed my view of Cloud Giants a bit. I always thought of them as more intentionally snobish, not evil per se, but just generally unpleasant. Seeing them portrayed as heroes in the war against the dragons gives them an air of nobility. If Storm Giants are the monarchs, Cloud Giants are like the king's greatest vassals and such. I get the sense that they leave the more labor-intensive work to their Fire and Frost kin, while the Cloud Giants fancy themselves as more like artists and artisans. Something like that, anyway. Thanks for the video.

I always like the idea of evil Cloud Giants over good ones. It should be a surprise to adventurers whether or not the beautiful cloud kingdom they arrive at is secretly their boon or their doom. It's questionable if evil Cloud Giants would even let outsiders get that close though. Like haughty giant aristocracy, I likened them to Aztec or Mayan royalty living on floating stone temples with terraced areas for agriculture and animal husbandry to appease their rich lifestyles. Although maybe I'm thinking that because of the image from the old advanced D&D monsters manual pictured at 2:23 .
