    Great info yet again 👍🏻. Speaking of bad combustion, I find different brands of fuel considerably change the sounds of the 1kd. Last fill from different supplier made mine sound like it was pinging badly. Bad for pistons or just is it an additive thing? Cheers

    Im aware of 4 1 kds that have cracked a piston, 1 has an exhaust only, the other 3 are completely stock, 1 owner is 71 years old, 4 year old prado, 73km on the clock, full toyota service history, has never towed a trailer ever.
    Cracked a piston sitting on the motorway at 100km with the cruise on, Toyota wanted $17,200 to fix it.
    I dont know a ridiculous amount of people but I yet I know of 4 cases. If there arn't many cases then Toyota should show good faith but they don't, just like they did with the DPF issue, blaming owners until they couldn't sweep it under the rug any more. I owned Toyotas for 12 years but not anymore.

      Hi Blair,
      We used to get calls from ppl I ha have never spoken to before, telling me about how they’ve Cracked Piston. I question them all thoroughly and a found there is always a reason (chips, tunes, flogged injectors & if premature, fuel contamination) from all the vehicles we service, change Injectors on, supply injector kits for Diy‘s and trade these people don’t have any problems it’s well documented by Toyota that wrong combustion is the cause of Cracked Piston‘s they know better than us. We’re not here to pretend we know more than them like some people on some groups.
      It’s just how it is.
      It’s avoidable by keeping the engine running in peak condition perhaps not towing too much, big towing is a contributor, remember it’s just a little four-cylinder and there’s problems across the board once you make a small engine make lots of power and then use it to haul around 5 to 6 tonne.
      Anyway I don’t care to argue with some of these delusional people, there is no end to it.
      Yes, there are hundreds of cracked pistons across Australia from hundreds of thousands of one of the most popular vehicles & engines.
      It’s going to happen to those that get used.
      Each to their own, it’s just what we see.
      Prevention works for us!
      Cheers

      I've read both Toyota reports, they both say they have seen failure with both good and bad injectors and point to a metalurgical issue.
      Toyota's demonstrated behaviour on DPF's and cracked pistons shows me they arn't a business that should be given the benefit of the doubt.

    I've never heard truer words said, they are such a great engine for what they were designed to do. I never understood why people keep trying to get so much power out of these motors, spend the money on a 200 if you need 3 tonne towing.

    I had the same opinion, all before I became the statistic. 4.5 yr old car, 161k on clock, owned since new. Cracked number 3, 1 and 2 cracked as well (most likely due to the hole in 3), serviced by Toyota since new. Paid to have Toyota give Injector Feedbacks at services 100k, 120k, 130k, 150k and, at 160k service, feedbacks were around 1mm3 well within spec. Toyota provided extended warranty on a short motor after the head was inspected and found to be ok, injectors were tested by a diesel specialist and found to be within spec and not replaced either. Car was used for highway kms, towed a 1.9t camper about twice a year for about 1000km total. Had no chip. Did have AFN bar (no front spotlights affecting radiator airflow), had 2 micron fuel manager filter post factory filter, replaced every 40k, had catch can. Figured I would be one of those customers who get the 300k out of their car as i was well aware of the issues. Never expected to become the statistic. After only short motor was replaced, I sold the car and got a new 1GD which may end up with the same position however Toyota have a 5+2 unlimited k warranty now so I am less worried.

    Just be careful when you assume you have cracked pistons. I had my Hilux tuned in 2015 when it had 70,000km. At 150,000km last year I went with a larger turbo, larger injectors and it's making huge power. 6 months later I had what I thought was a cracked piston. Dropped a cylinder, my tuner and my mechanic both said, yep you have cracked a piston. Told my mechanic to pull the engine for a full rebuild. He pulled the engine down and said the bottom end was perfect, no cracked piston, bearings looked fine, everything was to spec. Threw the engine back in the car and it was exactly the same. One of my 6-month-old Denso injectors had failed.
    Don't be stupid like me and at least do a compression and leak down test before assuming you have a cracked piston.
    Don't let this guy scare you in to thinking you will instantly get a cracked piston if you are making more power. My hilux beats my mates XR8 Boss 290 V8 falcon ute in a straight line, has done for 5 years, 80,000km. The engine is still perfect.

    • @Fourby4Diesel
      @Fourby4Diesel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You don’t need to worry about us lot here mate we know how to diagnose problems you have to be an absolute fool to pull an engine down without diagnosing it properly we know the difference between a dead injector and no compression and you want to come here and tell people not to be scared Don’t be so foolish.
      Oh and I suggest you get a new workshop new technicians stupidity 🤷‍♂️😂

      @@Fourby4Diesel Just a follow up on this. My engine builder sent my injectors back to the people who made my custom nozels. Injectors were flow tested and all were fine. Engine is re-assembled this week after getting pretty much everything replaced in the bottom end anyway. I got the deck shaved a bit to increase compression. Head has had a lot of work done, valve grind, port and polish. They are still not sure what caused piston 2 to miss but they think it was possibly a valve not closing properly as the head was pretty well caked in carbon build up. EGR was already disabled in the ECU but was completely removed during the rebuild and I am running an electronically actuated blow off valve to vent boost and stop compressor surge so there is no need for EGR.
      While it's in the shop all of the suspension is being replaced and I am getting a rear swaybar installed. I want to be able to throw it around corners and not have it roll over like stock hilux's do in the moose test. It's going on the Dyno after it's run-in. I am going to wind up boost a little more, push for about 400hp. I will be limiting torque to around 1000nm at the wheels to save the gearbox and just add more boost in the top end. Looking forward to smashing V8s again in a diesel 4cyl Hilux.

    • @finnsk3
      @finnsk3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't let him scare you, the 1KD tows just fine. The V6 drinks petrol like nothing else. A 4.5L v8 Landcruiser would be the best but they are a lot of money. 3L diesel will be fine, just won't be fast going up hills. I have towed a 2 toone caravan for 5 years with my Hilux that is running a bigger turbo, remap, larger injectors and 40psi of boost and never had an issue. Engine was recently pulled down and it was fine, just some carbon buildup due to exhaust gas recirculation.
      Also you really want to get a 2015 or newer. Lookup 110 Toyota Hilux piston, in 2014 they swapped to using a 110 code piston from 080 which is significantly stronger. I swapped from 080 to 110 while the engine was pulled apart just to be safe. The 110 piston has been proven to hold much more power than the 080 and even in race applications most people just run factory 110 Toyota pistons. Even in 500+ hp 1KDs running nitrous.

    The piston swirl bowl shape could be more of a factor to cracked pistons with a bad injector nozzle, Europe has many higher powered small 4 cylinders with no problems with pistons, over fueling and faulty emission system could crack a piston if the exhaust gases get to hot

    • @peixinho1973
      @peixinho1973 ปีที่แล้ว

      Obviously the design and material of the Toyota pistons is the problem.... as you were saying, here in Germany we have so many VW Seat etc. engines , 4 cal 2.0 with high hp running Autobahn all day with no problem. The 1KD was maybe designed to be a stationary engine, not for towing etc. . Anyways, mine is stock, changed injectors at 112tkms and is running fine. Would love to upgrade the IC, though. Just came back from South of France, that's a 1000km drive with 140km/h.... don't feel too comfortable having the exhaust temperature in mind...

    We were unaware that we should have changed the fuel injectors, and the shop doing our services obviously weren't either. If they had told us we would have done it in a heartbeat. 2012 Altitude, 250k resulting in a hole in the piston and subsequently a new/used 2013 Hilux engine with 136,000 km and everything replaced while they were at it, including brand new fuel injectors. Less than 1,000k later, on the first trip away from home, cracked 4th piston and apparently nothing wrong with the injectors after testing. So, we are now stuck 2 days from home, can't even rent a car here in Victoria for at least a week. Hearing from so many sources that this is a known issue, and that Toyota is replacing some out of warranty as they know it's an issue. Why would this engine crack a piston under these circumstances??
