  • @cockur

    It's not a conspiracy. It's a convention carried over from mixing consoles. If the source signal on the input channel is in mono eg. a single microphone signal, then the "balance" knob behaves as Pan. Ableton doesn't differentiate between a mono and a stereo channel. They simply offer you Utilities that allow a single channel function as either. This is just for your convenience really. It's worth pointing out that not all DAWs behave in this way.

    At 5:01 where Underbelly uses the Ozone Imager, you actually have to click "Stereoize" at the top left, or the plugin is bypassed. That's why you can't hear any difference as he sweeps the width parameter. (But for some reason, it does affect the visual).

    great vid. Wanted to add this from the ableton.com forum about the pan knob. I was still confused.......
    No, what I think Stromkraft is tying to say is that if you have a mono instrument, the end result of panning it with a Balance (what panning in Live (and most DAWs is)) and a true stereo panning tool will be exactly the same.
    A mono instrument without any panning will play and appear to be dead center, which is a result of a copy of the exact same signal being played on the right channel and left channel (hard right and left if you prefer) at the same time - whether this is already in the file itself (dual mono) or a true mono file being split by the DAW afterwards.
    Therefore, for example to do a hard left pan, whether you us Balancing (the Live Pan) to lower the level of the right channel to 0dB or you use True Panning to copy over the right channel to the left channel (and lowering the levels on the left appropriately), you are going to have the same result.
    The difference is if you have a stereo source - the definition of which is that there is something different happening on the right and left channels at the same time. Then with Balancing, for the hard left pan example above, you will loose one side of that stereo source, whereas with True Panning you will not.
    So to conclude, if you are simply panning your mono instruments, then the Live pan is perfectly fine to use. However, if you are adding processing to the mono sources as inserts into the channel - stereo delays, auto panning, chorus, etc - then that may become a problem if you then use the track's mixer panning - as you will loose one side of the "panning effect". You may then want to us the Utility tool to pan your source before it hits the effects on your track.

    • @KarmaPaym3ntPlan
      @KarmaPaym3ntPlan ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question, that I might end up giving you the wrong (at least incomplete) answer to -
      Below a certain frequency value (I’ve seen ~130 Hz), a lot will be diminished when panned.
      I think the answer to your question would be something like..
      It’s not so important that the volume is constant, as much as the components that you want to pop, continue to do so in both mono and stereo modes
