Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern (Frances McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. The third feature film from director Chloé Zhao, NOMADLAND features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West.

I think this movie is much more than just a story about poverty, or about a particular way of life.
Fern, the main character, she isn't just a nomad in the physical sense, she is a nomad spiritually and emotionally too. Once her life falls apart, she chooses to sort of wander the Earth, roam from place to place and whenever someone tries to get closer to her, she withdraws and leaves. Whenever someone offers something deeper, a companionship, friendship, etc., she chooses to keep her distance. She just picks the few nice moments, she ruminates about life with others before moving on and before things can get more muddled. In a way, she's picking only the good stuff at her age relationship-wise, and she's not bothering with the rest.
Perhaps she understands that due to her naturally emotional and good-natured core, she is only bound to be hurt sooner or later, and she is not interested in that at her age unless the relationships truly mean something to her. Perhaps she doesn't want to feel indebted to her sister for example, because she understands sooner or later, they would fight over something and her "status" living more comfortably thanks to her sister taking her in would be thrown in her face.
She just chooses to live life on her own terms at her age, because even though she is poor, there's pride in how she lives. She's honest to herself, honest to others and she's not selling out her own values and principles just so she can sleep in a more comfortable bed, or in a bigger house. She's struggling perhaps more against her own self and against her pride and integrity, but those are not bad values or not a bad belief system, if one is willing to accept life will get really tough from time to time.
It's a sad movie, a sad story, but it makes complete sense and there is poignance in it.

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
“Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
“Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May.
“And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.
“Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines.
“And often is his gold complexion dimmed.
“And every fair from fair sometimes declines.
“By chance or nature’s changing course undimmed.
“But thy eternal summer shall not fade.
“Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st.
“Nor shall death brag thou walkest in his shade.
“When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st.
“So long as men can breathe and eyes can see.
“So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.”

Sonnet 18 is one of the most beautiful poems ever written. It was meant to be spoken.. to be heard, not read. And for all of those who have known this poem all their lives, this scene shows you why this is :) (Oh, and for those interested, it was first published 10 years before the Mayflower set sail for what would later become The United States of America).

This was my first poem in my English literature class at my University. It was also the worst recited. Though I felt how meaningful it was. But I was discontent. I met this beautiful sonnet 18 again after a long time with more signification.
I think life lets us give a chance to refill those misplaced things. Just like this recitation. It's just complete something that remained incomplete inside me.

    (unrelated meaningless miracle)
I got a poetry book from the library that had a compilation of Shakespeare's sonnets, and I remember reading this one destinctly because of how good it was. And when I watched this movie for the first time, I recognized the poem from it's first words. And I felt like the fact that I had gotten the book a week before I watched the movie, meant something. Like I was prepared for this moment in the film.
    I don't know.

Every moment of it breathed a magic called life which i wanted to escape from. I will live against all the inner voice which are asking me to do otherwise , just to experience this scene with myself.

"Se te comparo a um dia de verão
És por certo mais belo e mais ameno
O vento espalha as folhas pelo chão
E o tempo do verão é bem pequeno.
Às vezes brilha o Sol em demasia
    Outras vezes desmaia com frieza;
O que é belo declina num só dia,
    Na terna mutação da natureza.
Mas em ti o verão será eterno,
    E a beleza que tens não perderás;
Nem chegarás da morte ao triste inverno:
Nestas linhas com o tempo crescerás.
E enquanto nesta terra houver um ser,
Meus versos vivos te farão viver."

Frances McDormand at her best! Both Andra Day and Carey Mulligan had outstanding performances, but for me McDormand had the best performance of the year, I really hope she would win her 3rd Oscar next month, it would be well deserved. But all things considered, it doesn't look like it's going to happen, she was written off by many predictions, for the simple reason that she already had two Oscars at home, and the major award shows currently are under intense scrutiny for lacking of diversity, so I can totally see why the academy would prefer someone else other than McDormand.
