Sappy, true. Poor acting, yes. However this movie touched my heart and has remained with me through many years. Even if you find love and feel it's the only one for you, that first love is not to be discarded. You can build on love with cherished memories and there's always that chance you WILL meet again.......if only in Heaven... Romantics must thrive in this cruel world.
This movie reached a level of sappiness that no movie has ever come close to. The shot of Shelly Hack entering the room with that enormous present as he gets up in slow motion , They probably had a sale on toaster ovens at Costco and she had one wrapped up.
you have great taste...it's gorgeous and should never have been panned by the critics and should have been a huge hit...much better than the film "you light up my life" and i love the music too. joseph brooks was a genius but his great weakness was his hubris...
ikr? With the critics also panning "Moment by Moment" and "Zanadu", you really gotta wonder where their heads are at, huh? And yeah, it's possible that his weakness wasn't quite hubirs, methinks...
This movie touched my heart from the time I first saw it on the big screen while stationed in Germany! I had a huge crush on Shelley Hack after the movie concluded. I owned the soundtrack for years, and have put the movie together on my computer. Thanks to whoever it was that made it available in sections, I am still able to watch it once in a great while. The story of Joe’s tragic last years of his life and death were heartbreaking, as he was such a gifted man.
I had this on VHS-video for long time (german television) - then we lost it! Is there anybody who has this wonderful movie (german or english) ???? It's one of my favorite movies!
thanks again for posting this! it means so much to me...great movie with beautiful score. everyone with whom i've shared it just adored it too~parallels my first love and i...met in 1978 when he was 17 and i 15 in disneyland! we've been trying ever since and i see him again in a month! i feel like a teenager again...god bless you joe brooks for the beauty so few got to see in real life...but it emanated from you. rest in peace. amen.
I remember seeing this movie when it came out. One of the most interesting thing was the studio that produced it, set up a phone number if you were seeking to find “the one that got away.” You could call the number provided and leave your name, if “the one that got away” called in and left their name seeking you, they would provide the other person’s contact information so you could get back in touch. Thought it was a interesting way to market a movie.
Does anyone remember the promo for the film? They had a toll free number you could call to see if someone you had loved and lost also wanted to see you again. For me It was love at first sight, I have never experienced anything like it before or since. She broke my heart and the heartache was a constant reminder of the loss. But it wasn't to be and 45 years later I still think of Charlene. And if ever I see you again.
I loved this movie and the music written by Joe Brooks is the creation of a true genius. It is sad the way his life finished but nothing can take away the fact that he was up there with the best in the music world. Also check out his score of the movie Jeremy amazing.
joe brooks had his own group, "joey brooks & the baroque folk" but couldn't make a living so started doing jingles in new york. he directed, scored and produced "you light up my life."
Yes, it is almost inconceivable that he directed scored and produced you light up my life, then went on to do this- and then basically nothing for years
If Ever I See You Again with Joe Brooks and Shelly Hack is a one of a kind movie. Joe Brooks was a genius and I think it is truly sad that this fill is not available on DVD! Joe Brooks and Shelly Hack both deserve recognition for their work in this beautiful production. Carol
i totally agree...it was kind of my story too...and i saw it the year i met my first love and the names and geography are similar...we're still trying...this touches my soul, for 34 years now!
How is it possible that there is no way on earth to see this movie? Is it so hard to put it on any streaming platform? Whats the problem? Doesn`t anybody want to make money?
I love this movie. The acting left much to be desired but it doesn't matter. This movie is great......the music is the best. Then ending is perfect. Thank you for posting this....you did a great job.
This movie with this amazing composer touched me deeply as a young man growing up in Pittsburgh. I think of my first love and the opportunity to meet with her once again and now feel deep sorrow for Joe who deserved a better passing RIP Joe
I saw this movie when it came out on cable. A few years ago I was able to get a VHS tape and made a DVD from it. There are parts of this movie that so many people can relate to,me included. This movie will always be special to me.
+trha2222 I love the music as well. The title song "When I See You Again" was also sung by the late singer Jamie Carr, who sang two songs from "Lords Of Flatbush" from 1974. Even a closing song (showing the credits at the end) can make it memorable for me. Example: the closing song to 1978's "The Driver" released in 1978.
Yeah it's possible that the "Come Share My Love" earworm might drive me to start randomly firing an old WWI-style bazooka at people. Poor, poor Shelley. :(
I saw this movie when it came out. I went to the matinee and remained for all showings into the evening... you could do that in the 1970s... I will never forget it. It was sappy, perhaps bad acting, but the premise of it? It had to be something if it remains in the memories of at least those who commented.
Thanks so much for posting this. For some reason that movie popped into my head tonight and I had to do a search. Too bad it isn't on DVD. Thanks again.
Indeed, yes. Gary Busey should also get involved. Too bad baldie eyebrowless Robert Blake is no longer around - would've made the ultimate foil to Joe and Shelly on the yacht. (what as, I'm not sure, but still would've looked natural and winning in their sublime presence.)
I SAW THE FILM IN 78. IT WAS GREAT THEN & STILL CARIES THE SAME CHARM & TRUTH. MAN, WHAT A HANDSOME GUY, WHO LATER LOST IT ALL IN SUICIDE! HE MUST HAVE BEEN TORN APART INSIDE! WE’LL NEVER KNOW FOR SURE BUT HE GAVE US SOME BEAUTIFUL MUSIC BEFORE HE LEFT US!
I am a romantic and this movie always appealed to me. It came out when I was married to my first wife, things were bad and I got to thinking of what might have been with lost loves. Came to mind tonight and had to look it up. My current & fantastic wife had never heard of it, LOL. Blockbuster & Netflix don't have it. Might have to buy it on dvd. Googled too much and saw all the crap that Joe Brooks has gotten himself into. So sad.
I loved that movie an all The songs, that have touched my heart since i saw the movie back in 1978. I use to have the albam. Wish I could find the full soundtrack .it brings tears to me. I have lost much over the years past love s, an just last Feb 3rd my dear sweat mom. Iam still heartbroken. This movie an music was such a gift annoys ageless. I was in my early 20s when i say it, mybe 19.or 20. It has stayed with me. All these years. I have not seen the movie in years, I love the California song, too. An the ending was so sweat
Yeah I have "California" and The "If I Ever See You Again" version clip on my "Likes" column. As for the rest of the songs, maybe they'll eventually show up on You Tube. Thank you again for the info.
they're pretty good...i've turned into a commitment-phobic jennifer corly from my old hopeless romantic self but we're working on it. still haven't seen him since april 2009 when he broke my heart again...but will always love him and this movie really takes me back to how i felt when i was 15! thanks for asking. that's very sweet of you!
It does seem that this film was the type that could only be enjoyed by denizens of Manhattan's Upper East Side who shopped at Macy's and Bloomingdale's, strove to be seen among the "Beautiful People" at Studio 54, started each morning with The New York Times, and held a lifetime subscription to New York magazine; so insular did the "plot" of this film come across.
i have studied joe brooks' life in detail...he got the movie deal with columbia after the success of "you light up my life" and it's really about his life in the most part so he paid $20,000 for the screen test and did well so columbia approved it. shelley was hired sight unseen and i have heard that he wanted her to wear glasses...probably to make them seem more in synch with each other...i have read nothing about ryan o'neal and farrah fawcett being considered much less hired for the film.
i'm finally going to be with my first love after all these years...35 years...since feb 1978, when we met in disneyland. his name is similar to bob morrison and mine similar to jennifer corley and he's in mass and i'm in cali...wow! he never forgot me and i never forgot him and we've tried so many times before through the years...i'm so nervous!
@flgomer I have a grainy but watchabe VHS/DVD of this movie. I watch it all the time. I saw this when it came out on cable in 1978. You never even hear any of the music from the movie on the radio. I heard Roberta Flacks version of If Ever I See You Again at a gas island once a long time ago.
@robmounseymusic one guy had good things to say...he was a composer and director who re-did "metropolis" with joe brooks in 2002 when it was on stage in salem, oregon...joe brooks had written the original stage play in england with then-wife susan paul, and it played at the piccadilly theater in 1989.
@LanceRock - And one of the co-stars of this turkey, Jimmy Breslin (who played a music contractor, if you could believe it), was nominated in the "Worst Performance by a Writer" category in Harry & Michael Medved's 1980 book "The Golden Turkey Awards" for his role here (the winner: Norman Mailer, for "Wild 90").
there is indeed a soundtrack...double lp's from columbia i think...there are other songs, like "california" and a long version of "if ever i see you again." i can't remember all of them offhand, but the ones in the clip have the majority. i love the music too! debby boone's albums also covered most of the songs in the film, if you can't find the double lp anywhere. hope that helps!
Jamie Carr began recording in the mid 1960's. He recorded many commercial jingles during his career, you will probably recognize his voice from many of those Folgers coffee commerials during the 70's and 80's.
@jennifercorly I think everyone has this story. It is always the 'idolized' love, perfect in our mind. 'If only', everything would have been different. Everything would have been better. Two strangers trying to rekindle a spark that was long gone. If it was meant to be, it would have happened.
no, no...this was written with martin davidson by brooks, who directed, starred and composed all the scores...it is very similar to his own life but not autobiographical...shelley hack was hired sight unseen and never auditioned...she never slept with him. he got a deal with columbia after the dazzling success of "you light up my life" and paid $20,000 to screen test and he did well and they said "okay." i think he's wonderful and adored him. you can see the love he put into music here.
Sappy, true. Poor acting, yes. However this movie touched my heart and has remained with me through many years. You can build on love with cherished memories and there's always that chance you WILL meet again.......if only in Heaven... Romantics must thrive in this cruel world.
It wasn't a great movie, but the music was great. Unfortunately, the personal life of Brooks over shadowed the movie.
I still believe~I WILL see you again.~and yes the love is still there.
I love the music and if you don’t love the theme song you haven’t really listened ~
This guy was a predator.
@@mailerjanet Well actually Janet I did give it another listen and found my anti-peristalsis was acting up, and had to take a Tylenol.
Sorry.
I saw the movie in 1978 and it has remained in my memories over many years.
Yes, I am too. It was funny, too
Music is so close to You light up my life.
Ahhhh, the wonders of TH-cam! Thanks for making me the 17-year-old again who believed that happy endings like this one could really be.
50 years and counting. If ever I see you again...
This movie reached a level of sappiness that no movie has ever come close to. The shot of Shelly Hack entering the room with that enormous present as he gets up in slow motion , They probably had a sale on toaster ovens at Costco and she had one wrapped up.
I know - beautiful, right? (in that sort of Redd Foxx kinda way)
I love this movie. I cry every time I watch it. It reminds me of my own lost love.
you have great taste...it's gorgeous and should never have been panned by the critics and should have been a huge hit...much better than the film "you light up my life" and i love the music too. joseph brooks was a genius but his great weakness was his hubris...

lovely love story & the sound track .....made me cry while watching
The arrangment of "Come Share My Love" sounds like a wine commercial.

This movie from the 70's touches my heart. Love the music in this....being the hopeless/hopeful romantic I've always been.
My favorite scene it's when the conductor and his friend play the piano together and this when conduct the orchestra. Wow
Saw it in the theater when it came out, I would go see it again.
I had this on VHS-video for long time (german television) - then we lost it! Is there anybody who has this wonderful movie (german or english) ???? It's one of my favorite movies!

jennifercorley Did you know Joe? Your name is the name he gave Shelly Hacks character. I knew him.
Joe was a monster. A really terrible person.
I remember seeing this movie when it came out. Wow we are all here old souls, nice to meet you.
Cool, so did Joe Brooks offer himself up as a "one who got away"?

Truly GREAT movie. Highly recommend for anyone thats a sappy romantic, and/or has a special someone in their past, :)
I loved this movie and the music written by Joe Brooks is the creation of a true genius. It is sad the way his life finished but nothing can take away the fact that he was up there with the best in the music world. Also check out his score of the movie Jeremy amazing.
Sure, up there with the best....Manilo, Sedaka, Morris Albert, Eric Carmen, Kool Kieth, John Longstreth.
45 years and counting yah if ever i see u again...i was high school then when this moviewas shown ...hauntingly BEAUTIFUL....
Great songs, great story. First love stays forever in our heart. The man had talent.
I want to see this movie so badly...
yes he did! he won 21 clio awards for his jingles. he was brilliant!
joe brooks had his own group, "joey brooks & the baroque folk" but couldn't make a living so started doing jingles in new york. he directed, scored and produced "you light up my life."

I love this movie, and "You Light Up My Life." I wish Hollywood would remake this.
Yes i believe Aronovsky and Fincher are mortally fighting over this.
Great movie, I was an exchange-student in Michigan at that time, full cinema and great memories!! Thank you for sharing, Lourens
excellent...thanks

Wish I had movie. I bought Sound track but lost it when car was stolen 1979
Love this movie !!!!! The music is wonderful and ther story is cute. BRAVO., Dennis
the music and the story line make it a hit.

Gosh, this brings back memories ... thank you ...
thank you for compiling these wonderful songs...i really enjoyed it again! joseph brooks was a genius!
Praying Tommy Wiseau decides to do a remake of "If Ever I See You Again." The man is a blessing to the acting industry. Long may he reign.
I fell in love with Shelly Hack when I first saw this movie in about 1983.
My favorite movie
I fell in love with this movie 😍.
this movie really gives you goose bumps...and remembering ur very ist. love...the one that got away and hope it didn't happened..haaaay...❤️❤️❤️
Joe was a rapist and a monster.
Very sad personal life for Joseph Brooks, ending in his suicide and a son convicted of murder. Soooo sad!
I am a romantic and this movie always appealed to me. It came out when I was married to my first wife, things were bad and I got to thinking of what might have been with lost loves. i couldn't agree more...it's gorgeous...
I ❤ it
やっとたどり着いた映画です。何十年も歳月が流れた、ありがとうございます🙇 わが心のジェニファー。わが心の風景そして景色です。心は色あせない。
Yeah I have "California" and The "If I Ever See You Again" version clip on my "Likes" column. As for the rest of the songs, maybe they'll eventually show up on You Tube. Thank you again for the info.
Really like and enjoy.
Awesome movie!!!!!
Really like this tribute especially the video portion of Come Share My Life. Thank you for posting.
I only saw the last few minutes of this movie...the song has stayed with me forever tho!!
i miss you joe brooks...
The Movie was at TV in Germany in 1982. I never forget!!!
Come share my love sounds like a commercial jingle 😂
LOVED THIS MOVIE for me...Still do...!!!...Not an Oscar Movie, but for me and my life, PERFECT...:):)!!!!
they're pretty good...i've turned into a commitment-phobic jennifer corly from my old hopeless romantic self but we're working on it. still haven't seen him since april 2009 when he broke my heart again...but will always love him and this movie really takes me back to how i felt when i was 15! thanks for asking. that's very sweet of you!
actually joe brooks wrote it and it is VERY much his story so i would say the sincerity level is a 10!
Sure, but there could be other levels at 10 other than sincerity, MAYBE....
wow, just wow--
It does seem that this film was the type that could only be enjoyed by denizens of Manhattan's Upper East Side who shopped at Macy's and Bloomingdale's, strove to be seen among the "Beautiful People" at Studio 54, started each morning with The New York Times, and held a lifetime subscription to New York magazine; so insular did the "plot" of this film come across.
Sappy? it sure is,.... great movie?,nope!, But it speaks to many of us,.. But....... I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it ever became available
Just look on demand it is there, I just watched it, I cried 😢 I loved Shelly ❤️
i have studied joe brooks' life in detail...he got the movie deal with columbia after the success of "you light up my life" and it's really about his life in the most part so he paid $20,000 for the screen test and did well so columbia approved it. shelley was hired sight unseen and i have heard that he wanted her to wear glasses...probably to make them seem more in synch with each other...i have read nothing about ryan o'neal and farrah fawcett being considered much less hired for the film.
Yeah the glasses thing really nails it.
i love this movie .
love ....love..love...
The orginal title for the movie was "Lovers Wearing Glasses"
ROFL!
i'm finally going to be with my first love after all these years...35 years...since feb 1978, when we met in disneyland. his name is similar to bob morrison and mine similar to jennifer corley and he's in mass and i'm in cali...wow! he never forgot me and i never forgot him and we've tried so many times before through the years...i'm so nervous!
LOl. Your comment made me chuckle out loud and ROFLMAO
Memories of Dave Hedden... oh, if ever I see you again...
@robmounseymusic one guy had good things to say...he was a composer and director who re-did "metropolis" with joe brooks in 2002 when it was on stage in salem, oregon...joe brooks had written the original stage play in england with then-wife susan paul, and it played at the piccadilly theater in 1989.
and "california" sounds like an airline commercial...he had great success in advertising jingles and won 21 clio awards...so that was his formula.
One of my all time favorites...Hopeless romantic
why couldn't you have been like bob morrison, kind and gentle and sweet since this was autobiograhical? you broke my heart!
I watched this movie years and years ago and loved it. only last night I Googled Joseph Brooks and read about him. terrible
i scored one years ago from a video store...blockbuster i believe. you can find copies on amazon sometimes. good luck!
there is indeed a soundtrack...double lp's from columbia i think...there are other songs, like "california" and a long version of "if ever i see you again." i can't remember all of them offhand, but the ones in the clip have the majority. i love the music too! debby boone's albums also covered most of the songs in the film, if you can't find the double lp anywhere. hope that helps!
The music was quite good- and in the hands of another director/actor/producer- who knows what could have happened?
@robmounseymusic it's a shame...and i really, really worshiped him for many years...devastating
It's a great movie for me I remember my childhood. Bad for me that not find subtitles movie u.u in Spanish
Jamie Carr began recording in the mid 1960's. He recorded many commercial jingles during his career, you will probably recognize his voice from many of those Folgers coffee commerials during the 70's and 80's.
Nobody waved goodbye is such a good song, it was played at Joe meeks funeral as he did a version with the Cryin Shames that predates this fil
Wow, that was such an awful movie but I totally loved it! Thank you this tribute.
Might have won an Oscar if Brooks had stepped aside and hired, say, Robert Redford to play the lead role.
@Azishome Joe Brooks started writing music for commercials,
he also wrote the soundtrack for the Lords of Flatbush &
You Light Up My Life.
@jennifercorly I think everyone has this story.
It is always the 'idolized' love, perfect in our mind.
'If only', everything would have been different.
Everything would have been better.
The reality usually doesn't hold up to the fantasy.
When you go back and find your lost lover
it will be revealing about yourself.
For me it didn't work!
Two strangers trying to rekindle a spark that
was long gone.
If it was meant to be, it would have happened.
you can get it on vhs though! i got a bootleg dvd somehow. it's beautiful!
i have the paperback i bought on amazon. i played the record in high school till it was worn out and don't know what i did with it!
you are obviously not a romantic individual, for everyone i know loves this movie and the score. joe brooks was a genius!
Do yourself a favor and look up Joe Brooks on Wikipedia - you'll look at this wretched film a little differnetly
Brooks' song here all reflect his advertising composing background--his songs sounds like commercials.
no, no...this was written with martin davidson by brooks, who directed, starred and composed all the scores...it is very similar to his own life but not autobiographical...shelley hack was hired sight unseen and never auditioned...she never slept with him. he got a deal with columbia after the dazzling success of "you light up my life" and paid $20,000 to screen test and he did well and they said "okay." i think he's wonderful and adored him. you can see the love he put into music here.
interesting...would love to see the 1972 article!
I'd forgotten how horrifying the 70s could be.
he sang songs in "the lords of flatbush" also composed by the great joe brooks...:)))
Where can i get this Film, where can i get the music/Soundtrack... it is so wonderful... can somebody help me? Thanks a lot
