Sharapova was a great player, but Serena was better at almost every aspect of the game. There's no aspect of her game that i can think of that's better than Serena's. Therefore Serena was a horrible match up for her. But Sharapova really troubled other players including some of those that gave Serena some troubles. It's quite surprising how the media tried to push a rivalry.
I think if Maria had a better slice and maybe developed a kick serve to throw Serena of her rhythm then things could’ve been different. That being said I 100% agree that Serena was a better player in nearly every single if not every facet of the game compared to Maria. The GOAT standing on Business!!
Not just that but Maria refused to try anything different. Her strategy was to try to out hit her. She would hit winners but rarely anything to string more than a game and not a series. Her serve was also never really the same and she didn't try to fix it either

From then on even if she was playing better or up in a match she was never confident enough in her own game to close out Serena and I don’t think she had that mentality against any other players. I wonder why it is so difficult for people to know what a rivalry is. Both women were always at the later stages of the tournaments. Maria beat all the players who beat Serena and both fought to get there, both wanted it. It doesn't matter if Serena won all their meetings or not, Maria was always present cuz no one else could, so give her some credit too, cuz not only she had to play the GOAT but Serena was always 100% focused against her, she wanted to destroy her and play as hard as she could. I wonder why it is so difficult for people to know what a rivalry is. Both women were always at the later stages of the tournaments. Maria beat all the players who beat Serena and both fought to get there, both wanted it. It doesn't matter if Serena won all their meetings or not, Maria was always present cuz no one else could, so give her some credit too, cuz not only she had to play the GOAT but Serena was always 100% focused against her, she wanted to destroy her and play as hard as she could. We all could see that fire that wasn't much present against other players. Maybe just against Henin too.
Serena played hard against everyone she faced unless she was off that day. I love how people focus on how hard she played against Sharapova, and ignore how hard she played everyone else. The thing is Sharapova just wasn't that good, and it showed when she played against Serena. They were giving excuses as to why Sharapova lost to Serena so many times.

Although the head to head is skewed, I think Serena’s ego caused her to raise her level when they played. If she played like that against everyone, she’d probably have won 30 slams.
It wasn't her ego. It was being dismissed as far as how skilled a player she is. All they talk about is her power, never about how skilled she is at ball placement and everything else. Sharapova didn't have the skills, but they talked her up anyway.
@@vangu2918 yeah, that’s true too. Definitely gave her extra incentive. I still watch some of her matches and appreciate her skills even more now. She absorbed pace well, was great at redirecting the ball, and changing pace.
