As a Moldovan myself, I fully understand Andrei's background history and behaviour. From another side, I can see why Lib's family is insistent when it comes to his past. Asking questions is completely normal, especially when their daughter has a child with a person from another continent. The way he reacts is too aggressive and his brother is right: there isn't a huge problem between Lib's family and him. The only thing that makes them argue is the fact that all of them are impulsive. They should try to calm down and talk peacefully. Andrei should comprehend that her family wants the best for her and has the right to know who their granddaughter's father is. Yet her relatives should be more apprehensive towards him and his culture since we don't open up that quickly. They should give him more time in order to let him get used to this new situation.

As someone from Eastern Europe (Romania, specifically), I can tell you that corruption is so common that NO ONE bats an eye when you bribe the police officer to not get a ticket or slip a few hundred lei in the pockets of a doctor so that he won't let you die. And the corruption level at the higher-ups is so much more rampant. People don't even act shocked anymore when you find out that a politician stole money and built himself a villa in some foreign country. I have not heard of one good, honest, non-stealing politician for as long as I have been alive.

Corruption in Moldova is at a very high level. This does not mean that Andrei was a criminal. It is possible that somebody from his police bosses could ask him to do ilegal stuff whatever it could be. It is possible that Andrei refused to do so. In this case, he would be forced to leave police forces. During his job, it is possible that Andrei have received some serios threats, including death threats. P.S. Unfortunately, Moldova is a very poor country. That means that close to 50% of its population is forced to go abroad in search of better paid jobs in order to be able to help their families survive and for their children continue their studies. From aproximate 4 millions of Moldovans, at least from 1to 2 milions are working abroad. Some of them (arround 700.000 are living and working in Russia; even more people have chosen to move permamently or temporary to live and work in European Union or North America. As far as I know for the moment, the number of Moldovans working and living aboroad are growing first of all in countries like Italy, Germany, UK and, more recently, United States). I have lot of friends whose parents were or ar still working abroad. Some of them don't see home their parents for years (only online on Skype or other simillar stuff) In comparison, to show you that the poverty issue is a very big problem in some regions in Eastern Europe, I will give you short statistics about Ukraine. In this country, the number of population has been dropping dramaticly since the dissollution of the USSR (1991). Ukraine had aprox 53 millions at the fall of the Soviet Union. As someone from Eastern Europe (Romania, specifically), I can tell you that corruption is so common that NO ONE bats an eye when you bribe the police officer to not get a ticket or slip a few hundred lei in the pockets of a doctor so that he won't let you die. And the corruption level at the higher-ups is so much more rampant. People don't even act shocked anymore when you find out that a politician stole money and built himself a villa in some foreign country. I have not heard of one good, honest, non-stealing politician for as long as I have been alive.

I get that the family is being protective because that is what a real family does. If they suspect that there's some bullshit going on, they're gonna try and find out the truth. Period. They don't know if he just made a few mistakes or if he was a serial killer. One of the main reasons why people get kidnapped or killed by someone that they trusted is because they don't ask questions or because they "just let it go". I understand their concerns because they want their sister safe, but as a person born and raised in Moldova I can tell you that this kind of story is 150% real. Corruption in Moldova is at a very high level. This does not mean that Andrei was a criminal. It is possible that somebody from his police bosses could ask him to do ilegal stuff whatever it could be. It is possible that Andrei refused to do so. In this case, he would be forced to leave police forces. During his job, it is possible that Andrei have received some serios threats, including death threats.
P.S. Unfortunately, Moldova is a very poor country. That means that close to 50% of its population is forced to go abroad in search of better paid jobs in order to be able to help their families survive and for their children continue their studies. From aproximate 4 millions of Moldovans, at least from 1to 2 milions are working abroad. Some of them (arround 700.000 are living and working in Russia; even more people have chosen to move permamently or temporary to live and work in European Union or North America. As far as I know for the moment, the number of Moldovans working and living aboroad are growing first of all in countries like Italy, Germany, UK and, more recently, United States). I have lot of friends whose parents were or ar still working abroad. Some of them don't see home their parents for years (only online on Skype or other simillar stuff)
In comparison, to show you that the poverty issue is a very big problem in some regions in Eastern Europe, I will give you short statistics about Ukraine. In this country, the number of population has been dropping dramaticly since the dissollution of the USSR (1991). Ukraine had aprox 53 millions at the fall of the Soviet Union. Now we are talking about a drop of 10 millions (aprox 43 millions at the moment)
