    I'm super impressed on how well you described Ojamajo doremi. I always understood it as a shallow magical girls anime to sell cheap plastic toys. But seeing that the characters age in real time is such a novel concept. Also the inclusion of darker topics that many childern encounter really elevates it to something that someone can carry with them their entire life. I will definitely check it out when the time is right.

    Thank you for giving Doremi the recognition it deserves. I am one of the children who grew up with the series, though my country only ever aired the first 2 seasons and I had to use other means to watch the rest of it wayyy later
    Doremi changed me as a person, no other series influenced me as much as this one did. I have core memories of certain moments in the series, that struck a chord within me.
    Doremi to me is one of the best anime ever made. Every single one of those 200 episodes is worth the watch. I wish there was more. I really hope they'll make the 16-20s series as teased...

      That's so special and even though I didn't have that experience myself I totally get it. I wish I had the series growing up myself because I know it would have changed and influenced me much in the same way, but even now I feel how the characters and messages touch my heart. It's such a beautiful series and I agree I could have watched so much more of it but I'm glad that the series had such a wonderful ending that felt like a conclusion on the creator's terms rather than something made it be dragged out and milked into stagnation.

    I grew up watching doremi, lucky for me i watched it in my elementary years, and watching these girls grow up , make new friendships, learn and change , watch their lives change ,watching them struggle with their ownselves or they lifes , I felt a connection like I wasn't alone somehow it teacher a kid that everyone struggles but there will be a better tomorrow , they really help me alot and when I think back to them in my kid memories they manage to have stayed as people. I'm so glad I grow up watching it because I full heartedly believe that I wouldn't be the person I am today.
    The fact that they made a movie about the people who grew up watching it ,is really touching

    Doremi shaped me as a person in the most positive way. I'm so glad I was able to watch it as a kid. I frequently consider rewatching it now as an adult, but I think it would be too much for me emotionally. I was on the verge of tears just watching the clips in this video (and I don't even remember what happens, it just hits me deep in my heart). Still, you may have just convinced me to watch it again, man. Thank you.

I'd love to watch it again with somebody who's never seen it. If you haven't seen it since your childhood then I think that's even more reason to give it a revisit, I wish I could have had this series growing up, it's the kind of series that shapes you and sticks with you forever.

    I know how hard it is to convey to people the brilliance of media that "mostly" targets a younger demographic but still pertains to a much larger audience, and yet, you absolutely nailed the pitch with Ojamajo.
    This whole video was beautiful, but that entire last section REALLY spoke to me. Especially considering, outside of all things anime and manga, I'm a HUGE dweeb for cartoons, yet its a hard thing to recommend to people, especially when they are on the older end of the spectrum. Its nice seeing someone who can look past "who this series is for" and look more-so at "what this series is all about".
    Ojamajo is now on the high priority watch list. Thank you for your passionate recommendation

      @@kokodin5895 I know lots of people who have seen (or at least know of) Goldfish Warning. It's popular in the Mahou Shoujo/Shoujo scene because of the director Junichi Satou (Ojamajo Doremi, Hugtto Precure, Princess Tutu, Aria), but also because (and arguably more importantly) Kunihiko Ikuhara (Sailor Moon, Utena, Penguindrum) was episode director for multiple episodes.
      Both Junichi and Ikuhara went on to direct Sailor Moon which is the reason why there are multiple Goldfish Warning references!

    Your pitch for Doremi hit exactly the way it should. Portrayal of the passage of time and the mundane process of growing up is one of my favroite parts of slice of life and character drama when done well, and it forms the bedrock of my two favorite series (March Comes in like a Lion, Sound Euphonium). I've had it sitting on my hard drive for several years but never got to it, so it seems like I ought to rectify that.
    But, if I may put on my curmudgeon hat for a moment to touch on the one list entry I differ on
    I'm apparently out of step with consensus on It's MyGO. It wasn't bad per se, it's mechanically solid, but I found a real hollowness at its core. The unremitting nature of the drama started to get grating in the back half, and I found myself asking at multiple points why these characters hang out with each other. Most of them are shown to have other friends they engage normally with, where all we see them do as a band is get into fights and work out trauma.
    Those scenes work as drama, but when it's laser focused on them with no downtime the characters start to come off as skeletons being moved around in a very lifelike manner with no flesh on the bones. Even with Tomori, who among the five has the most justification for why she's portrayed that way, when you compare her to similar characters like Mizore from Sound Euphonium it becomes obvious how that lack of down time does the series a disservice.
    Regardless of that, your channel is one of the only ones I actually use for recommendations these days, so I'll be looking forward to what the next year brings.

    • @PhenomSage
      @PhenomSage  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't necessarily agree about MyGO but I definitely see where you're coming from, I also had an issue with how melodramatic it was in the back half of the series, it was definitely unrelenting and honestly a bit overwrought, when scaling it back would have made things hit even harder imo. Still, I think the cast and overarching storyline is really great so I was more than willing to look past that.
      As for Doremi, yeah all I can say is that if you're looking for that aspect of growing up and can make the investment, there's no other series I could recommend more.

    If you're the type of person who would feel self-conscious watching a show such as Doremi, I find it helps to remind yourself - things made for children are still made by adults.
    Episode 40 of Dokkaan, arguably the show's single most famous episode, is lauded not only for its director Mamoru Hosoda but also the events that led to him joining the project. He channeled his emotions of his unceremonious exit from Studio Ghibli into the direction of this episode, a history that would not at all be relatable to the pre-teens in the target audience - and yet, frustration and uncertainty are such universally known and universally difficult emotions that the episode resonates with anyone of any age who watches it.

    10:30 In retrospect, seeing The Tatami Galaxy at nineteen back in 2011 was tremendously important. I highly recommend this one to people at the tail end of their teens and their early twenties who are young enough to have a lot of life ahead of them and still be searching for where to go next but old enough to have had at least some life experience and, importantly, faced at least a handful of major setbacks. See it first when you're still in high school and it won't make as much sense emotionally; see it first when you're a fair bit older and it may still become a favourite but it's likely to lose some of that life-changing immediacy. This isn't to discourage anyone from seeing it at all, but it's definitely a series which hits you best at a very specific time in your life.

      Gintama has been high on my priority list for this exact reason, I've heard it's slow from fans of more traditional battle shonen but that slowness and the comedic nature of the series has always interested me a lot, on top of the more serious arcs it has. Like you said, it sounds like it does that melding of tones thing that Doremi does in much the same way. I have a feeling when I get around to it I'll definitely be talking about it on the channel.

    YOUR TAKE OJAMAJO DOREMI IS AMAZING I was a lucky child to grow up with it and coincidentally it started airing where I live when I was in 3rd grade but it was only until the 3rd season and I didn’t know about the 4th one until 6th grade and managed to watch a few clips of it on yt and that created the funny memory of me hiding behind the couch crying and having someone catch me but at that time I didn’t know what anime was so I couldn’t find any other way to watch it until 8th grade and till now I still remember the day when I finished it I’m sure I used a full tissue box and I kept on crying for around 3 hours and not too long ago we got 25th anni mv with them being adults and I just became an adult recently so this whole time it felt like I was growing up with the girls and that alone makes it more special to me but the main reason would still be because it shaped who I am both mentally and emotionally like I can’t imagine being the person who I am right now if it wasn’t for this show (and now for the important question: which season was your favorite?)

If you can get past the embarrassment of watching a show like that it gets very very sweet(but tbh I'm fine with only one season as I've heard non savory things for me personally going on in the manga)

    I remember as a kid I would never watch popular magical girl shows that aired at the time. I never understood the appeal of Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura but for some reason watched Ojamajo Doremi almost religiously along with anime like pokemon, dragon ball, digimon, beyblade, medabots and some american shows like Power Rangers.
    I need to do a rewatch soon because its been like 20 years since I last saw it. Also I think the yellow witch with glasses was problably my first cartoon crush.

    Onimai is something I deeply love. I have spent an insanily amount of time researching everything about the anime production! I started right after it aired. It's the perfect blend of sus animation mixed with wholesome themes. Something I love the most about animation. I encourage every fan to buy the blu ray of the show! Here are some facts I found during my research:
    The animator behind the famous bling bang bang born dance, was apart of the production and animated a part in episode 8.
    One of the main animators, miton, inserted his original character (miton-chan) as a doujinish in episode 4. (in fact /a/ bagged miton to show her nipples after the episode aired)
    The director mentioned episode 12 bath scene was a lot more lewd but had to dim down the loli level lol...
    In episode 1, you can see Nekotofu's other series character.
    There is footage of Nekotofu singing the Onimai opening in a karaoke booth.
    The onsen in episode 12 is based on Ginzan Onsen.
    Ryo Imamura, the character designer, is a fan of Hazbin Hotel.
    Akio Watanabe, the character designer for many series like monogatari series, storyboarded the opening and noted it was kinda difficult to match the vibe of the music.
    Kay Yu, another main animator, is most notable know for his game holocure (a fan made game on steam).
    I have a ton more but I think this is good enough to prove the point...

    • @PhenomSage
      @PhenomSage  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Love all these little facts! Had no idea Imamura was a fan of Hazbin Hotel lol. I love how wide reaching the production on Onimai was, it's a rare kind of production that felt like a bunch of talented people really loved what they were working on and it shows in the final product.

    The fact that you unapologetically loved Onimai as much as I did makes me quite happy. 100% agree it was the best anime last year. It was a show that I actually had the most fun with for quite some time. The vibes and the general coziness were so nice.
    Although, I would suggest pulling back from the “trans-positivity” you mentioned cuz that ain’t it. Had nothing to do with the anime despite the fact that there was a gender bend… which was part of what was so enjoyable to me.

    • @GankBaronGuys
      @GankBaronGuys 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's a real shame that the western lens turns anything genderbendy into trans shit. Haven't read the manga but the anime at least was not at all about Mahiro being meant to be a woman and was entirely about him getting to relive his youth without the pressure he felt from having an extraordinarily gifted younger sister. Still a fantastic show.

      I'm glad that other people loved it as well but I'm curious why you don't think that was an angle of the series? I think the author has even re-affirmed a lot of people who tweeted at them about that aspect and made it clear it was intentional. Either way, I think it's definitely a valid interpretation of the series, that's actually a part of what made it so heartwarming and wholesome was how the gender bending gag wasn't just a "gag" or something Mahiro constantly complained about, but was actually something they grew to invest themselves into.

    • @bondsie2
      @bondsie2 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@PhenomSage When it comes to the idea of transgenderism it’s not about you learning the values and the feelings of the opposite sex/gender but rather that those in their current sex don’t feel comfortable in it and therefore seek something else out of a desire to understand themselves. Typically a transgender person is more seeking an identity and that’s not really an angle that the series is coming from nor is it something that the series suggests.
      I would say that the gender bend aspect of the series is a catalyst that drives Mahiro into coming to appreciate and love the feminine aspects of life and society. Not so much that he was searching for himself as a man and found himself being more woman-ly. It’s not like he sought out womanhood, he was forced into it and he wasn’t happy with it initially, until he learned to get used to the lifestyle and found himself engrossed in it.

      I watched 0079 --> War in the Pocket --> Zeta --> ZZ --> Char's Counterattack if I recall correctly. I tried watching the recap movies for 0079 but the pacing felt so cut up I couldn't get into it. But if you were just trying to pass the prerequisite stuff as fast as possible then yeah it's probably the way to go. I still don't regret watching them even if I didn't enjoy them just because now it means I can watch a bunch of other awesome Gundam material that use them as a foundation. I just finished Unicorn and it was incredible.

    darn, you made me cry again at the very end of the list
    Ojamajo is the wierdest anime ever "improvised" an extension for. because, let's be true it was suposed to be one year trip that extended to being 4 years long vacation. and it is at places not even that well connected, but you don't even notice that ompu fairy changed name mid season1-2 transition or that the magic god baby and former queen are shoehorned in for the plot but ending up wining your heart in later seasons, plus you been brainwashed to like hana as a child watching pokemon because she is just a talking pikachu
    all this aside ojamajo is the greatest story about growing out of your childhood dreams and finding your future life goals, and making friends along the way who last you a lifetime
    i never watched it as a kid, i was fully grown up and i can't watch it again because i would break emotionally right before season 4 ends, because i just don't want for the ride to end

      That's honestly what makes the series even more special for me, they kept finding new ways to expand the story and develop the characters. It felt like it kept going because the creators kept coming up with the new ways to flesh out the themes and ideas, it doesn't stagnate, and it feels like it ends on its own terms in the most perfect way you could want it to for the characters. I don't think anything like this could be made today and that's what makes it so great.
