Wisconsin 2 Cylinder THD First Cold Start In 20 Years

  • Rated at 16 horsepower; both pistons move up and down at the same time, allowing a perfect 360 degrees between power strokes. The TJD had the pistons 180 degrees out of phase; one moved up while the other moved down. while theoretically better for balancing, this meant igniton was only 90 degrees apart. The engine, therefore, sounded peculiar, as it would fire twice and then pause. the beat was uneven. The engine in the video, however, has regular ignition spacing. Subscribe for more weird engines

This is a great video! I enjoy watching it. I too have a few old Wisconsin engines. Two 2 cylinders and 2 single cylinders. These engines are tough as nails and I'm sure will be around another 100 years from now. They won't die!

Hopefully I'll get around to lapping the valves and finding a purpose for this engine so we can see it run under load!

@@unigrampa you should make some more videos regarding this engine and other small engines. I like your video about diesel and combustibility with the match and your video about starting that old car. You seem very knowledgeable and are entertaining to watch. Have a great holiday.

@@JonathanGJean all I have is magneto, no distributors.

Pouring gasoline into an engine from an open container is very dangerous. If that sucker backfires he and everything around would be covered with flaming gasoline.
I got a magneto fired TJD running, was a fun project. It sure did sound odd!

I agree, he should pick up small engines at flea markets or something, fix them, discuss what he had to do to get it running, run it and just be himself, he has a great personality.

Oh it definitely ran on both cylinders. Pretty much the whole time too, sounds like that valve settled its differences with that seat lol

hello, been searching the internet for information on these as I found one at an estate farm sale connected to a Lincoln welder. It turns (not seized) but nobody knows if it will run, it's actually a TFD, considering it doesn't currently run what do you think they're worth? They want probably too much for it

Hard to say value, depends a lot on the condition and your local area. If the cylinders are good, most everything else you can fix pretty easy. Engine in running condition is probably a 200$ thing by itself if you find the right buyer. Maybe more but engine prices have been dropping cos all the old guys dying. With a working welder attached to it, you could probably ask 800$ for it fairly easy if it ran. If it starts easy and you put a nice coat of paint on it and make it look roughly factory, probably even quite a bit more.
I wouldn't pay a lot for it though. You don't know if the windings are good or how much work you're getting in to. I'd offer $100 for the whole unit. Maybe $150 max.
That's just me though, those are just my estimates. Your milage will vary.

@@unigrampa yeah that's about what I was thinking, thanks! One of the welder cables is kinda melted so I doubt it's in top condition. The engine serial number comes up as being made in 1941 on the Wisconsin site but that seems way too early, specially considering it's in Australia and there was a war going on at that time. thanks for the info.

If Ebay doesnt have a used one, you might be SOL. This is not a common engine. Parts are gonna be scarce. You can try just googling it, sometimes random tractor websites have parts new or used.
