Mass Appeal Tips for growing moss in your yard

- Are you looking to change the look of your backyard? Moss plants can be grown as an alternative to grass for lawns in shade. Master Gardener Ed Sourdiffe joined us in Studio 1A with tips on how to grow moss.
I tried it, and years later I can tell you, the blender/baggie with buttermilk method does not work. But I love moss and found what does work: 1. Pick a location that moss wants to grow, there's probably some there already. 2. Scrap up some moss from somewhere else, big or small pieces, whatever you can find, and press it into the new place. Hold it with rocks or giant staples or whatever you like. Keep it moist and IF it likes it there, it will stick and grow. I have it happily growing in cracks in the old asphalt walkway apron around my house, and as ground cover in full shade and part shade. If you want it on soil, it needs to be quite solid, not rich and fluffy like for other plants. As it grows on rocks, trees, and even concrete, moss does not need anything from the surface it's on but stability.
Step 1 can be compensated for, if you sprinkle it with water until it gets established. Loose moss is not happy moss. After it's attached, it will be OK going dormant, but not forever. Keep it from spending too much time all dried out, and soon it will be gorgeous.
Ah Thank you. I just started to transition my grass lawn into a moss lawn. we have a mini forest near to where we live that has a ton of moss. i have been taking some in small batches. Glad you said buttermilk does not work as i find that a bit of an effort. so far i am just raking the bare patches of lawn, sprinkly some sulphur powder (as my soil is chalky, but read they prefer more acid conditions) then plonking the moss on it and stepping on it so it adheres more then watering it own. have been doing this for 2 days. I am also blogging about it. so excited to see what happens in 3-4 months

I walk a bike trial that used to be a rail road track. And I noticed that there is a lime colored moss growing and even in the early spring it looks great. I was thinking there must be a why to grow it in a yard. I didn't know you can blend it up and make more. Thanks for this video!
Has anyone ever really gotten the blender milk yogurt thing to work. I've tried it a number times and it's never worked. And I don't know anyone who's got it to work for them either.
You could try beer and sugar... You did what was in the video and had no success? I was about to do this in my garden but maybe I shouldnt...

Nobody has ever shown the results of this silly moss milkshake thing. why? cause it turns into a moldy mess, nothing else. Just collect moss pads in the wild (sustainably!), put them where you want them, and keep them moist.
A better way that produces a carpet like you want if your doing the milkshake is to replace the milk with water, and use a really quick, low speed burst in the blender. Spread that and keep it misted at least twice a day... Bam! you have moss.

I'm finishing up a 30'×5' pathway tomorrow. Just moss and water, it really is coming along well. Definitely recommend not making slurries or milkshakes with beer, buttermilk or yogurt. This video incorrectly suggested that there are nutrients in yogurt that help the moss. Also recommend separating your mosses so they dont compete too much. Can't imagine why a gardening expert would recommend blending different types too see which does better.

A yard with mold
I use moss as a filler between ferns in my 2 fern gardens, the moss is harvested in the woods and placed on the ground near the ferns. It has always been a successful transplant. Most of the ferns and other plants were harvested in the woods also.
roy hoco it’s best not to encourage people to take plants from the forest, in a lot of parts of the world that can quickly lead to forest reserves getting denuded as seedlings, saplings and undergrowth get taken.
There's is ZERO need for the Moss shake. Moss is confused with fungus. No, its a plant. Forget the yogurt, buttermilk, etc.
If you want to get it growing on a pot, etc., just breaks up the mossup into small pieces. Spray the pot with a light coating of spray adhesive ( used for crafts, posters...etc). Sprinkle the moss bits on to the pot....keep mildly moist. Or, if the surface is amenable...just use screws and screw Full moss sheets to the surface.

You're better off just pulsing the moss clumps in water or peat.
It doesn't work.. for those who didn't know. Its an urban myth.

Sir could u please help me suggest if I can use cooked rice water instead of curd as u said in your video curd act as glue for moss propagation. As I don't put salt while cooking rice. Can the starch present in cooked rice water help in moss propagation. Kindly reply sir.

@@sheevanevahdunrong1874 No it didn't it's a nightmare. DO NOT TRY THIS. Simply use distilled water along with a little bit of seaweed fert will do.

if the moss / yogurt mixture is too thin can you add corn starch or will this mess up the moss growing it the new location

Hello, I am new to moss and I am very much inclined to have a moss terrarium. I know that you are a moss and bonsai expert but I think your tips on keeping the moss alive for a longer time can help me. I live in Mumbai, India and the climate is very diverse here. As of now it is monsoon season and its pretty humid and wet, hence I got the moss growing on rock walls. But after a couple of months, its gonna be cold here and I fear that my moss will die out. Can you please help me understand how to keep it alive in colder times?

How well does moss hold up to foot traffic?
Quin Rose Dependends how often you walk on it if you think of when you have walked in a forest you can do it but it will dry out with too much . Look up a plant company called Stepables they sell short ground covers than can be walked on and are sold in local garden centers . I have used these products they work .

I wasn't going to put that into my blender! I didn't even think of that. I was thinking that factory farm cows would shit into a tube (since they can't go anywhere) and then a machine would mix moss with it and flatten it out. Then we would have sheets of moss.
why the hell are the cows in a factory that is horrible?? from what i gathered from other vids the moss wouldn't like the cow manure anyway because the moss doesn't need that many nutrients as it usually just grows on rocks with no soil etc.

When you take moss off of a rock it has a layer of soil under it. I don't know where that soil came from. It's almost as if moss is making top soil. I agree factory farms are horrible but you know what. There are billions of humans on this planet. You want cheap beef in your grocery stores then we need factory farms. They produce more meat and dairy driving down prices. If we got rid of the meat and dairy industry millions of people would be without income to feed their families and millions of people would go without food. We can not live off agriculture alone.

well i've never really heard of factory farming of cows in my country but anyway. yeah that stuff underneath I'm guessing isn't soil maybe its the dead old moss the new growth is attached to i dunno from what i remember when i learn't about moss at university they dont need soil lol.
