I am a huge moss fan and we are moving to a different house built in 1969 that has a lot of existing moss I will be encouraging and want less grass and more moss every year. I am about 80 miles east of Nashville in Cookeville TN.
There is a famous garden in Japan called Koke Dera (which means Moss Temple) that is nothing but moss. Absolutely beautiful. I was letting it grow in my Atlanta backyard but then started planting ferns and they took over...
We have always used moss. It is actually a terrific mulch when it gets an inch or so thick so we were surprised to hear about it needing weeding. Our favorites are the true aquatic mosses.
Paul Moore's moss lawn and focal features in his native garden are superb examples of moss gardening success. Having had the pleasure of visiting this impressive moss landscape, I can testify that it is MOSS-some! Paul's exemplary efforts serve as an inspiration to other moss gardeners like me. Great interview and thanks for spreading the moss word. I hope more people will realize the pleasure of gardening with mosses and embrace these ancient, miniature plants as a preferred horticultural choice. I have some really nice, shady spots in the yard that I can't wait to "rehab" into a little moss garden. Gardening: where do you want your effort? In one big chunk or a little every day~ Great tips & a lovely garden. =)
I am absolutely fascinated with moss, love this video and how much you know about moss. I have a patch in front of my house and I was wondering if moss would grow if planted on mulch. Thank you!
I have read that if you mix butter milk with water (2 to 1) and spray over moss into any empty patches it will encourage the moss to spread. Anyone on here try this? Thanks
I have some really steep shady slopes on the northside of my house that is really difficult to mow. Was thinking that a clean border between lawn and moss would be great. It's Green, stort and wont need mowing. Now i just have to figure out how to make it real 😂
That is so beautiful. Never seen anything like that before, just beautiful! We have just sand around here and some patches of grass would moss grow around or on sand?
How do you keep weeds out? I have a moss path through my natural garden area but it is filled with weeds. If I kill the weeds the moss will be killed too so I'm stumped.

That really is beautiful, most people think of moss as a weed and unsightly but he's done a fantastic job there, thanks for showing us.
