    There is a way to unlock it too by switching to unlocked mode by holding the ptt button plus # while turning it on and then hit menu 42.

      You don't need to reset, as it's reset when you initiate each mode.

    I wondered if there were other secret keystroke codes.
    Before turning on the HT, hold down the PTT while pressing '1' and turning power on. Hold till message comes up.
    Before turning on the HT, hold down the PTT while pressing '2' and turning power on. Hold till message comes up.
    Before turning on the HT, hold down the PTT while pressing '7' and turning power on. Hold till message comes up.
    Don't know what #7 "init all" means or if different from # "init all". I will be investigating.

    Odd I have the H* ham radio version and my opmaster app gives me option to unlock all so i can out in gmrs freqs. I have a gmrs license now so I have both ham and gmrs licenses but i havent done the unlock all. i know many have but somewhere in head i cant convince myself to break the rules

      Yeah when I made this video the unlocked version wasn't available on the app. I'm going to do another video soon to show the menu options on the app.

    So I got the H8-Gen2 GMRS Version
    When I go to put it in Ham mode
    Is it actually in ham and receiving and transmitting? And how do I tell if it's working new to the game I've got gmrs licensing just need to know to keep me out of trouble so again is the ham actually just for listening or can you transmit to thanks for help Merry Christmas

    • @hockeyham
      @hockeyham  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It can by default RECEIVE on ham frequencies, but my mod was for setting up the capability to TRANSMIT on ham frequencies as well as receive.
      If you are not licensed for ham, do not key up the radio (or program it to not transmit).
      Merry Christmas to you and yours as well

    One thing to consider is that if you plan to use this radio in Ham Mode, you might be better off getting the Ham version, rather than the gmrs version to begin with.
    This is because Chinese manufacturers are known for only puting in as many components as are needed. This radio would likely come fine tuned for the GMRS (uhf) band. But while being manufactured without the intention of it being used for the 2 meter band, you might want to ask yourself, "will this actually come with the proper components needed for the 2m (vhf) band? And will it include the proper harmonic supression for that band?"
    This could actually be a valid concern. However if you purchase the Ham radio version to begin with, you can be reasonably sure that it will include those components. You may need to buy an antenna for using it as a gmrs radio, but at least you can be sure that the radio would be complete and fully usable in both modes.

    I dont understand your "hack". All you did was enter HAM frq with offset and CTSS and save in a memory channel, while in default GMRS bios boot. Is that your hack? If so, doesnt that make the bios boot options of HAM and ALL obsolete?

    • @hockeyham
      @hockeyham  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The H8GMRS radio was designed for GMRS Only. If you use the app on your smartphone it will not program outside of GMRS to transmit, just receive. Using the keypad (albeit slow) will allow the radio to transmit.
      However since this video was made there is now an option in the app software to choose the Unlocked version so that you can program with the app outside of GMRS frequencies. I plan to do a followup video soon.

      I’m a bit confused. I hold a Tech and GMRS license. Do I order a GMRS radio and take advantage of both Ham and GMRS at a lower wattage or purchase a HAM version that can do GMRS at higher wattage?

    • @survivetheattack
      @survivetheattack 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@frankcessna7345 I went the GMRS version, which is 5 watt output. I guess the HAM version has 10 watt(ish) output. The bios boot option/feature allows for boot to GMRS (which is how it ships), or on that same screen, choose HAM, or ALL. When you boot to all, it's an open frequency transmitter (FCC is not going to be happy about that, but it makes for a nice and inexpensive all-in-one for ham licensees.

    • @AntonioClaudioMichael
      @AntonioClaudioMichael 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@frankcessna7345the gen 2 Gmrs and Ham h8 radios do the same Wattage When in Unlocked Mode so wouldn't matter which model you choose they both come in the same colors and Full kits

    • @pjc4425

      @@survivetheattackIt's smart going with gmrs radio version if not ham licensed.
      Options within gmrs version make it friendly for emergency use when GMRS repeaters are scarce in users area

      They have two “versions” ham and a gmrs but with two different prices but they’re exactly the same radio with the same power. With a simple unlock you can pick gmrs or ham. Gate keeping 😂
