TID is sending me a Generation 3 . I too had the same issue , they responded quickly , politely and were happy to resolve the issues with all Generation 2 radios . They stand behind the product and are truly committed to seeing satisfied customers.
Great job and thanks for helping to fix what should have been tested for before you got the radios. Makes me wonder about the rest of that company's QC. I'm a new ham looking for my first radio and these videos are invaluable.
Oh yes. The company should fix as many issues before releasing stuff... But it looks like they have the actual knowledge to make a good radio/fix issues and the balls (which most companies seem not too) to publicly communicate about negative stuff on their side and rectify it. Lets hope they learn and their next release is cleaner
You put a lot of effort into this Ape, and I'm glad TID responded. Like you, I wish they would have gotten this right the first time...its not like there aren't any Tiny SA's being made in a factory 1 block over from them. Hope a software updates fixes the prior hardware. You now have enough stock to be considered a TID distributor.
I sent mine back. I really liked it but the issues out weighed the pros. Mine didn’t make the noise when keyed but had very low transmit audio. Should have cranked up the mic gain. I noticed that if you don’t have gain set to at least 25 your face needs to be practically touching the radio when talking.
Nice review on it. I have watched your others and put off buying one until things were fixed. Now I am going to wait awhile to let the new firmware come into stock. Also glad to hear TID listened to you and hopefully others that might have contacted them. 73

Yes. It would be nice to have a satisfactory radio from the get-go, but it's very nice that they are working with users to improve things. That is a plus.
Thank you for a very good review, especially the detailed history and multiple tests to confirm that the problem was resolved. Hopefully when other folks order this model, the radio that ships off the shelf will also be fixed, not bad like your original ones. My disappointment concerns output power. ICOM already makes some HTs with a good solid 7 watts output. The TID output of 7.7 watts is only 0.4 dB more than 7 watts ... an insignificant difference. 7.7 watts is also 1.1 dB less than the advertised 10 watts. So in spite of the improvements you noted, I wouldn't buy this radio because of its "high output power." It's still false advertising IMHO. Again thanks for the excellent data and review! 73 de K3GEM
Hey Greg, given my experience with TID I'd never recommend them to anyone. Also, after the radios were "fixed" many hams who bought them after still had problems and "support" was less than helpful.
Just bought a couple 2nd gen TD-H8s. Programming/ Mic port does not work. Can short out an transmit. Can transmit to repeaters, but no modulation. Returned the radios. Oh, support line busy all day. Couldn't get thru.
After watching this video, seeing that Tidradio fixed the problems I went and ordered one. It arrived today, and after charging the batteries, I went through the menus, and what do I see, firmware 230317. I am not a happy customer right now, but with what you and others have said about their customer service I sent them a message. So waiting to see what they have to say. At least I can still send it back to Amazon if necessary. I was looking forward to using it, but not with all the spurs etc you showed on the older videos. Just wanted to let you and others know they 230317 are still in the pipeline.

Having harmonics of the fundamental can give erroneous power readings since most detectors are diode based, and sensitive to harmonic influence. The improved harmonic readings on the new radio may be even better as you may be looking at the dynamic range of the spectrum analyser. Try an LC notch on 146 MHz or a 300 MHz HPF on the output of the attenuator.
With respect to the Amazon stock, a H8 Ham delivered yesterday came with HAM_230317! But the audio issue is not present. Which makes me lean towards there was a hardware change. Notable is that with the TD-771 antenna, when using the external microphone there is an obvious range improvement likely due to a better ground (plane) for the antenna formed by the external microphone cable. I want to test this with a car mounted antenna, likely later today.

I had the same issue. The mic gain setting was likely set too low at the factory. Tidradio told me that the ODMaster app does have a mic gain setting to change it higher. I hope CHIRP gets updated to be able access that setting. I tried it last month and it didn't have it. I don't trust the ODMaster app, it wants too many privileges on my phone that I don't see a need for it to have in order to program the radio. so, I returned it, given all of the other reported issues.

Got mine early December from Amazon with 230317 firmware. I’m running strictly GMRS and I’ve had nothing but great success with it. I’m hitting repeaters 54+ miles from my home and even hit a few repeaters that are 20 miles away inside my home in basement!
I have never messed with the UV99 and have only marginal experience with the RA89 which I just did a video on. I'd probably say the Retevis just because I have more experience with them in general than TYT.
Now if we could connect the BT to my AV system in the car, so that I can use a PTT button on my steering wheel, THAT would be great Are you listening ICOM, Kenwood, Yaesu?
Info from the manufacturer. There will be no modifications or fixes to the SMD board in the V8 model. Another version of the Td-V3 model is in preparation. He's due out soon. If it doesn't outclass Quansheng this time, the brand will be just an episode for me - a curiosity. And no one will take the test as uncompromisingly as you👍.

I think tidradio announced that amazon still has some of the old stock but they already send the new stock to their warehouse. If you are unlucky and get an old one, they will replace it immediately for you

Looking for distortion on RF waveforms is rather pointless unless you are looking for gross distortion. A -10dB signal would be about 3.1% noise on the carrier, which you may be able to see. At. -20d, you’d be looking for 1% distortion, which would be very hard to see. In addition, your scope would need to have a much higher bandwidth to see the distortion. For example, a 500 MHz oscilloscope would be 3dB down (showing 70.7% amplitude) at 500MHz. Any distortion products would be much higher in frequency and would be attenuated. Using a good commercial spectrum analyzer is a much more meaningful test. Thank you for this and similar videos.
I bought on Amazon 2 of these radios: GRMS and HAM, the HAM has the noise, the GRMS NO noise. The GRMS comes unlocked for HAM, so is a HAM radio without noise. I guess they fix NOTHING for you, they just tested some radios and sent you a radio without this issue. Other people also related their radios have no noise. Is almost random.
I’m using mine as GMRS and haven’t had any issues. I’m hitting repeaters 54 miles away on medium power. Mine had 230317 firmware on it from Amazon. I don’t run ham on it even though I could but I don’t have any issues with it and I’m getting good feed back from contacts.
Why as a company test for half a year when your customers can test all of that in 3 days :D If you act like tidradio (replacing units without hassle, fixing the issues, listening to feedback etc) i see no deal breaker in this approach (although it is usually used in software which makes much more sense). How they acted reminds me a bit of the early oneplus company with their community forums which i quite liked. So now I'm considering buying this radio :)
I'm disappointed with the H8 I received 4/22 direct from TIDRADIO. At 146.5 on high power 37.1dBm which is 5watts, not 10 and the harmonic is -12dBm on the tinySA. Six emails the last two days to return/refund and Khan doesn't think there an issue. Their customer service is disappointing, too. The H8 is 02/24 manufacture with most recent firmware. @@TheSmokinApeSaga continues. Replacement was 1w higher at 6w and comparable harmonic. Also bought one on AliExpress for $34 and it's 9.5w with comparable harmonic. Power tune made no difference on high power only L and M. Quality control is lax or...I don't know.
Did you or anyone else happen to notice the horrible RF interference that the LED display causes? Tidradio's are poorly designed (engineered) in many ways.
So it’s your fault?! Your responsible for the TD-H8 being my favorite? I am a new ham (4months) and have 18 different types of HT radios. I of course started with a simple UV-5R and will always love them but carry my H8 at all times. I actually purchased 22 uv-5rs, programmed them, reboxed them, and put them in my closet. Everyone (except my eye rolling girlfriend) in my family and friends group is getting one. Well, my sister is getting the H8 but she’s into radios just like me. We use a local repeater to talk to each other 35 miles apart. Lately I’ve been using my tinySA to test all my radios and the H8 is one of the best. Just under a couple yeasus I have. I have gone through Amazon and have purchased every radio they carry under $100 and the H8 is the best so far. I must say my least favorite is the UV-17r. I bricked it the first night I had it. Only recently figured out how to un-brick it. I’ll take a UV-5R over a 17 any day of the week. I mean, I’m sure someone loves them, but not me.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they did send doctored radios to reviewers. But most “reviewers” are actually promoters who do little, if any empirical testing. Also, if reviewers had to buy the equipment, you would see less “reviews.”

I tested the power with my Telewave 44AP and got just 4 watts. The Talkpod A36plus cranked out 10 watts...

Does the tidradio use same cable as the uv-5r or other baofeng? Tried to use it for chirp on Td-h8 and would not communicate.
It does but its difficult to make sure it is fully seated.

Looking for distortion on RF waveforms is rather pointless unless you are looking for gross distortion. A -10dB signal would be about 3.1% noise on the carrier, which you may be able to see. At. -20d, you’d be looking for 1% distortion, which would be very hard to see. In addition, your scope would need to have a much higher bandwidth to see the distortion. For example, a 500 MHz oscilloscope would be 3dB down (showing 70.7% amplitude) at 500MHz. Any distortion products would be much higher in frequency and would be attenuated. Using a good commercial spectrum analyzer is a much more meaningful test. Thank you for this and similar videos.

Anyone buy one of these recently and find problems?
I bought on Amazon 2 of these radios: GRMS and HAM, the HAM has the noise, the GRMS NO noise. The GRMS comes unlocked for HAM, so is a HAM radio without noise. I guess they fix NOTHING for you, they just tested some radios and sent you a radio without this issue. Other people also related their radios have no noise. Is almost random.
There is the noice problem but also the spurious emissions, did these folks test that as well?
I’m using mine as GMRS and haven’t had any issues. I’m hitting repeaters 54 miles away on medium power. Mine had 230317 firmware on it from Amazon. I don’t run ham on it even though I could but I don’t have any issues with it and I’m getting good feed back from contacts.
@@Freebird_67 Yes, GRMS has a lot of power, but if you change it to HAM will be only 5W.

Why as a company test for half a year when your customers can test all of that in 3 days :D
If you act like tidradio (replacing units without hassle, fixing the issues, listening to feedback etc) i see no deal breaker in this approach (although it is usually used in software which makes much more sense).
How they acted reminds me a bit of the early oneplus company with their community forums which i quite liked. So now I'm considering buying this radio :)

I'm disappointed with the H8 I received 4/22 direct from TIDRADIO. At 146.5 on high power 37.1dBm which is 5watts, not 10 and the harmonic is -12dBm on the tinySA. Six emails the last two days to return/refund and Khan doesn't think there an issue. Their customer service is disappointing, too. The H8 is 02/24 manufacture with most recent firmware. I thought I'd done my homework. 73 KN6VYP

@@TheSmokinApeSaga continues. Replacement was 1w higher at 6w and comparable harmonic. Also bought one on AliExpress for $34 and it's 9.5w with comparable harmonic. Power tune made no difference on high power only L and M. Quality control is lax or...I don't know.

So it’s your fault?! Your responsible for the TD-H8 being my favorite? I am a new ham (4months) and have 18 different types of HT radios. I of course started with a simple UV-5R and will always love them but carry my H8 at all times. I actually purchased 22 uv-5rs, programmed them, reboxed them, and put them in my closet. Everyone (except my eye rolling girlfriend) in my family and friends group is getting one. Well, my sister is getting the H8 but she’s into radios just like me. We use a local repeater to talk to each other 35 miles apart. Lately I’ve been using my tinySA to test all my radios and the H8 is one of the best. Just under a couple yeasus I have. I have gone through Amazon and have purchased every radio they carry under $100 and the H8 is the best so far. I must say my least favorite is the UV-17r. I bricked it the first night I had it. Only recently figured out how to un-brick it. I’ll take a UV-5R over a 17 any day of the week. I mean, I’m sure someone loves them, but not me.

What if they send the reviewer a good one and sell to the rest the unmagic? Reviewers should always buy one apart from the vendor.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they did send doctored radios to reviewers. But most “reviewers” are actually promoters who do little, if any empirical testing. Also, if reviewers had to buy the equipment, you would see less “reviews.”
