Electrolysis of Water Setup

  • This is one simple way to perform electrolysis of water. You'll need a plastic tub, 2 test tubes, 3 large rubber bands, baking soda, duct tape, 9 volt battery and clip-on leads, and 2 sticks of graphite (or 2 pencils). Graphite can be obtained in an arts/crafts store (it's used for drawing). Or if you want to do it the hard way you can disassemble a 6 volt (lantern) battery. The hydrogen tube will fill up twice as fast (because each "broken" water molecule has 2 hydrogen atoms for each oxygen atom).

      This is really late but I imagine you could seal the open end of the test tube while it is still partially filled with water, then you can take it out and you have some gas at the top.

    A few questions: Do the stainless steel alligator clips corrode or break down after many uses with the baking soda/ water solution? Does the carbon rods break down after repeated use with the water/ solution?

      When I used salt in the water, the clips would corrode completely after a couple of uses. Because of this (and the unwanted production of chlorine gas), I now use baking soda, and I've been using the same clips for several years now, although there is still some apparent corrosion.

    Hello .
    Is it possible to have hydrogen (electrolysis) from salt/sea water
    (Only generally speaking)
    under following conditions :
    Input voltage 5 Volts DC Voltage.
    Total resistance between electrodes in the sea salt water 0.1 Ohm
    Important : There is resistor connected in series with resistance R = 4 Ohm.
    So total resistance of the entire circuit is 4.1 Ohm.
    The question is only general.

    Does this reaction produce sodium hydroxide or lye like when using salt to make the water more conductive? I would think so since the sodium in baking soda would bond to the hydrogen and oxygen, but just wanted to check.

      Tejas Maraliga chrloine gets dissolved in water and lye is produced. check out the sci guys on using salt water.

    Thankyou for the video...I intend to advise this video for my 11 year old kid for his science experiment. Just wondering if this is safe for kids to do by themselves as there is bit of Hydrogen involved..

      Yes, I do this with my students in Science Club, ages 10-13. With a container the size of a test tube, the explosion is very small (in one of my other videos you can see students doing this). We find that you get the loudest "pop" by having only an inch or two of hydrogen in the test tube (which allows oxygen in the tube to easily mix in the reaction when you light it!) We have never had any problem doing this, and in fact most kids just hold the test tube in their hand (upside down) over the candle flame.
      However, I would advise using baking soda as the electrolyte, rather than salt, as is commonly done. When using salt, the electrolysis produces a small amount of chlorine gas, which is better not to breathe!

    How come some Electrolysis processes make sodium hypochlorite and other make HOCL. If I add vinegar to the salt and water does it produce HOCl and without the vinegar you get sodium hypochlorite?

    This video is just awesome....The same experiment is given in our class 10 ncert Science book also but I was wondering how to stabalise the test tubes and there was nothing bout baking soda there also it needed at least half hour to work.This video tell everything clearly but I still have a question,what was that thing connected to the wires which were holding the graphite sticks???Thanks for the help

    it is simple method but can you please tell me how to take out the tubes with H2 and O2 outside the water??

      My students just lift the tubes straight up through the rubber bands and out of the water. Hydrogen is lighter than air, so it should stay in the tube as long as you hold the mouth of the tube downward. Still, the gas will eventually escape, so the students hold their hand over the mouth of the tube until they can put it over a candle and hear the hydrogen make a "POP!"

    Three more question, can the same container be used, without washing it out and starting over again, repeatedly by just adding water? Or, does both water and baking soda have to be added every time even if using the same container repeatedly? Is there another electrolytic chemical that can be added only 1 time, and only have to add water for continuous use?

      I would replace the water. When you do this you will see a color change in the water, which indicates a chemical change. It's a small amount of water and baking soda, so from my perspective it would be silly not to just replace it each time.

      Hi Shreya. I'm glad you found this interesting. Test tubes are a simple way to collect the gas produced, but you could substitute any other similar narrow container as long as you have away to hold it in position. Sometimes I use small, narrow glass bottles, or you can get "soda bottle preforms", which are used to make 2-liter soda bottles. The preforms can be found online inexpensively, and won't break like test tubes if dropped.

      In the past I have taken apart a large 6 volt battery (such as for lanterns), and inside you can find 4 thick graphite rods. But wear rubber gloves to protect from chemicals, and watch the sharp edges after cutting into the battery!

      Christian Hartwig I premix a 5-gallon bucket with about a cup of baking soda so I have plenty of solution to dispense to my students all at once. I would think a teaspoon or two of baking soda in these little tubs would be plenty.

    Congratulations John Biegun!!! Your video clarifies so many misconceptions students have!!! You also use easy to find and cheap to buy materilas and that's also cool!! My question is this: Instead of using a 9V battery, can i use an AC/DC Adapter 1.5V-12VDC ? Is it safe?

      One container fills with hydrogen, and the other fills with oxygen. The one that has twice as much gas is the hydrogen (because H2O has two hydrogen atoms for each oxygen atom).

      Adding any kind of salt helps the electricity to more easily pass through the water. Many people use regular table salt (sodium chloride) which works also, but it releases a bit of chlorine gas, which you may not want to breathe. The baking soda works fine for us.

      mido amed the Hydrogen and oxygen ratio is 2:1. Thats why its H20. (2 molecules of Hydrogen and 1 molecule of Oxygen)

      In solids you need free electrons ( or holes ) to conduct, In liquid electrolytes you need ions. when baking soda is dissolved in water it ionizes (although weakly) into sodium and hydroxide ions which moves towards their respective electrodes under a potential difference. This by definition is a current. The fact that conductivity changes is used in conductometric titration do read about it.

      ***** I'll assume you are joking, but I always do have to warn my students that AC electricity and water are very dangerous together. Some kids do notice a bit of juice from these 9-volt batteries, and I use the larger 6-volt lantern batteries when I do this in a small aquarium, but I wouldn't go beyond that.

      AC is the electricity that comes from a wall outlet. It can electrocute you causing serious injury or death. I will not try to explain how electricity works as I'm not an expert and you can easily find that information elsewhere. Use a 9-volt battery for this experiment and you'll be safe.

      This is not the way to collect a lot of oxygen. There are certainly better chemical reactions; probably something involving hydrogen peroxide, I would think. It easily breaks down into water and oxygen, which is why it is kept in a dark container to protect it from light. If you check out a video of the Elephant Toothpaste experiment you'll see the dramatic release of a lot of oxygen.

    I have 3 questions. Will Magnesium Sulfate corrode the clips like salt does? Also, my science fair project tests whether electricity changes the pH level of water, so is it fine if I don't use the test tubes at all and just insert pH paper after awhile? And is it possible to use other batteries of different voltages, such 3V?

    this is not electrolysis of water, this is electrolysis of sodium bi-carbonate solution! People are so naive!

      @@vijayshukla8961 Indeed. And even if the Sodium Bicarbonate breaks down, it becomes Hydrogen, Oxygen, Sodium and Carbon. The Hydrogen and Oxygen end up collected whereas the tiny bits of Sodium and Carbon sinks as the density is greater than water. So adding Baking Powder helps not only to increase conductivity, but also increase the rate of electrolysis of water.
