  • Experiment with data for electrolysis of water. A 9V battery is used to decompose water in a 3M NaOH solution. The data shows a smaller volume of gas produced from one electrode (3.8 mL) and a larger volume of gas produced from the other (7.6 mL). These gases are tested using a splint to confirm hydrogen is the larger volume of gas and oxygen is the smaller.
    Alternatives to sodium hydroxide are safer for contact, but most produce gases either through electrolysis or as acid is produced.
    I tried using sodium bicarbonate, sodium acetate, sodium citrate, potassium nitrate and sodium sulfate using various concentrations in distilled water. Only 3M NaOH avoided this problem.

    I tried this in a small bottle with 2 stainless steel plates about 0.3mm apart and drew about 20A at 5V. Distilled water with some NaOH in it. The production of H2 and O were abundant.
    The stainless steel electrodes never corroded and still looked like new.

    This could be better explained.
    First, the polarities should've been established. Who is the cathode (-) who is the anode(+).
    Then, describe the chemistry behind the reaction.
    H2O produces twice more hydrogen molecules than Oxygen, as H2 and O. Then calculate the molar volume of Hydrogen and Oxygen and confirm with empirical results.
    As ideal gases volumes are known as 22.4 L/mol and hydrogen has twice as much than oxygen.

    This video is demonstrating something really interesting.
    But if you filmed it again there would be many improvements you could make!
    When you’re performing the splint test on the hydrogen, it would be a great idea not to put your hand in-front of the camera.
    Equally, it would perhaps be better if both test tubes were full of their respective gases the second time around to give a more dramatic example of the reaction that takes place when they are ignited!
    It is nice that you have demonstrated this reaction.

    Hi Scott, i am conducting a research, in which i choose 3 compounds as electrolyte/catalyst:
    1.) Sodium Hydroxide
    2.) Potassium Hydroxide
    3.) Potassium Carbonate
    Can you please suggest me which one will be good if i will use the same source of energy to compare.
    i want to generate the setup that will be efficient or can generate large amount of H2 gas.
    as i am making an experimental data, you can additionally share the records of the experiment conducted by you as you described in the description.
    Also i want to know what are the factors that relates the performance of this kind of setup or cell, and how we can control the efficiency of this cell.
    i want to make the most efficient HHO generator, that means the one which use less power and produce more HHO

      I tried a lot of different compounds, 3M NaOH was far superior for getting the correct 2:1 ratio of gases. Anything with chloride would make limited amounts of chlorine which would dissolve in the water. Sodium sulfate would produce sulfur oxide gases, sodium bicarbonate did not work well. The biggest problem is the production of other gases, but even NaOH would produce odd results if not at the correct concentration.

    No idea if you are still watching this space, Scott but ... is any NaOH lost in the process? i.e. if you arranged to keep the volume of water constant as the hydrolysis occurred, would the NaOH solution remain at 3M? Or would a constant resupply of NaOH be required to maintain the concentration? Thanks for the video :)

      A bit spills out due to the bubbling. Not much, I don't think any net is loss due to reaction because H+ and OH- are both generated and the solution mixes regularly when the test tubes are moved. Everything I've experienced is that it remains 3M, it does discolor often due to the burning splint residue so I only reuse solutions for 5-6 runs of the experiment usually.

    what about the pop sound in oxygen (when flame kept near) and there isnt any blue flames seen while reaction with hydrogen.

    Why do we add a small amount of dilute acid to the water before electrolysing it?

      The dilute acid in water creates ions which will allow the electricity to flow into the water as well. This will electrically decompose the water to give us the two gases namely oxygen and hydrogen. Hope this helps

    Are the hydrogen and oxygen gas formed neutral charge?
    So they can't attract or repel other ions? Or make new molecules?
    I saw a video from plasmacluster air purifier saying it made O2- and H+ ions that attach to coronavirus spike proteins and form negatively charged OH radicals that electrostatically attract H+ from the surface protein of the virus and break it down.
    But if the gases made from water electrolysis are neutral charged then I don't understand how that is possible.

    Hi sir, if you continue to run this experiment, does all the water will be completely drained and become only Hydrogen Gas & Oxygen gas?

      The electrode loses contact with the solution in the H2 side eventually and the circuit shuts down after about 12 mL of H2 gas are produced, if you could keep the solution in contact it would keep going for a while but the top isn't covered in a way to push the solution out.

      Scott Milam How about if i continuously channel out the H2 & O2 gas out from the Test Tubes to another container (example attemp: th-cam.com/video/gZJEDe_HUcw/w-d-xo.html), does it mean this electrolysis can be continue for infinate time ? Or I need to constantly add NaOH into water in order to keep the electrolysis running infinate time?

      It'd be hard to do that effectively in my opinion. Or at least if that's your goal it'd be easier just to decompose peroxide and hook up tubing so you could still do a collection over water. Then for H2 just add Ca to water or a reactive metal to acid. You wouldn't be able to keep a seal with the electrolysis kit and it would take longer than the alternatives.

    Why would you need to have a sodium hydroxide solution added if you are trying to demonstrate the production of gas from water? Will it work without it? How do you know the nodes are not simply reacting with the solution to create the gas? I see liquid has reduced in the tank very minimally, and this demonstration is very unsatisfactory. We should be able to measure the gases and see how they relate to the water, but more importantly understand the reaction of the use of sodium or potassium hydroxide and its reaction on the electrodes, and isolate this from what we assume as gas production from water.

      Due to the polarising effect of the electric current the oxygen and hydrogen becomes polarised and are arranged in two different rows as seen in video. Oxygen carries the negative charge hence it is attractted towards the anode and hydrogen carries positive and hence attracted towards the cathode. Hence oxygen and hydrogen get seperated in anode and cathode respectively. But as you can see in the cathode test tube the amount of empty space is double than anode tube because hydrogen reacts in ratio 1:8 by mass this means water is in the form 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 atom of oxygen.

    So if one wanted to collect both gases, why would 3M NaOH be safer than plain distilled H2O? If NaOH is safer, then would keeping some of the salt in the water during distillation be prudent?

      H2O in a pure form would not carry out electrolysis because in its pure form it does not conduct electricity. An ion producing substance like NaOH or H2SO4 is necessary to donate ionization without harming the purity of H2 and O2 gas.

      the negative electrode can be made of less reactive metal like Copper and the +ive electrode must be graphite.....the positive electrode will release O2 therefor if you use a metal, oxide of that metal will form. in the negative electrode H2 gets produced therefore you don't need to worry about that. just remember that you need a graphite rod at the positive electrode. you can get this rod by throwing an empty AA sized 1.5V dry cell on your wall ... open the contents safely after you see that the metal cover is wide enough... carefully take out the carbon rod.... and wash it with water to remove the reactive stuff.... and then you can use em...... careful while handling H2.... its the best fuel.

      It needs something ionic to conduct electricity through the water, the 3M NaOH produces the least alternative gases that would otherwise mess up results. I am not sure why the concentration matters, but I tried about 8 other solutions and this was by far the best. Anything with chloride produces enough chlorine (that dissolves) to alter the 2:1 ratio.

      not the net reaction (2H2O --> 2H2 + O2) but if you split it into 1/2 reactions it is involved, alternatives are anything that conduct electricity when aqueous but don't have an anion that produce an alternative gas. I tried NaC2H3O2, Na2SO4, NaHCO3, NaCl and sodium citrate and none worked as well, but would give a 1:1 or 3:1 ratio.

      graphite works best, if you buy the kits I use in the video it's all set for you and you can just clip alligator clips to the battery.

      @@bloodsthicker5651 without adding acid water cannot be electrolysed. Distilled water is a bad conductor of electricity.... so by adding acid, it becomes a good conductor of electricity..... Hope that helps you🙂🙂🙂🙂

If you believe water to be two gasses in our pressure system, prove it. Find someone that's made a specific amount of water from two specific amounts of the two gasses. Best of luck to you 👍

      The 1 st tube is filled with hydrogen gas... When ke kept the burning matchstick into the hydrogen tube... Their is pop sound heard for us.... But in 2 nd tube.... Oxygen gas is filled.. So when he kept the burning match stick kept into the oxygen tube... It gets burning extra..
