    Nice video ... I have some cans also but here is the problem: it is relative to the collection device diameter and depth. There is a quasi-standard that NOAA uses but it is something like 8 inch diameter opening. At any rate, measure the can diameter and depth. Mine has a diameter of 3.25 inches and a depth of 1.20 inches. Roughly 3 inches by 1 inch. Definitely, if you put a ruler in the container @ 0.500 inches, you get 1/2 inch of water (half the can). But ... take that 1/2 inch of water and pour it into a rain gauge. I used a LaCrosse 6 inch rain gauge, and my 1 inch depth can gave me 4 inches on the rain gauge. 1/2 inch in the tuna can gave 2 inches on rain gauge. It is a relative measurement, but it is not an absolute 1/2 inch of rainfall, for example. For me, it is useful to estimate what water is being put down as compared to something more consistent or known - like a rain gauge. And, be it said that I have two rain gauges, and they are not both in agreement - due to the mathematical principals that are not standardized and followed from one company to the next. So, if I put the tuna can (1 inch depth) in the lawn next to the LaCrosse rain gauge, and it comes a downpour, when the can fills up, the rain gauge will read approximately 4 inches of rain. Apply that as you will :).

    Tuna cans have a straight side and a flat bottom. That is why they are recommended. The containers you used have a wider or flared outward opening at the top compared to the flat bottom surface area. So you have a funnel effect whereby the amount of water entering the wider upper surface area is funneled into a smaller area at the bottom. That gives a false higher level of water received.
    Change the measuring container to an upright soda bottle with a small opening at the top with its wider bottom. In this case the entering 1/2 " of water spreads out on the bottom but is measured at a lower height.
    Any straight sided can and with a flat bottom are what you need, and why they are recommended.

    There is a guy in the neghborhood who waters his lawn most at night. Which is supposed to be a big no no. But It maintains very green. The rest of us who water during the day have crispy brown grass. Can you explain why that may be??

    • @380stroker
      @380stroker 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you water during the day the water doesn't have a chance to soak down into the roots due to evaporation, so your grass won't get water and dry out. You should be watering around 4-9am.

      @@TheLawnWhisperer I have been telling people the best time to water is in the am, because the grass can use the water during the photosynthesis process that day.
      People continue to argue with me though, & say night is the best. I have not found a really good sceintific theory or reason they prefer this. It has been so dry in my location at night the water would be absorbed by the ground overnight, & lawn dry by the am😧.
      We just finally got a decent rain since April.😇

    I can’t and I figure most people can’t have their sprinkler run for 30 mins. After about 10 mins there is water running and not pooling. I sprinkle for 10 mins rest 2 hours water again this is in the am and then 10 more mins after sundown. Water run off gets worse as the watering time increases. How do you deal with that?

    • @380stroker

    Respectfully that measuring idea may not be the best. Due to size difference of containers. Like you'll get faster results if you use a shot glass or you can get results slower with a pot. So would it be better if the measurement instrument to be larger or smaller? I'm genuinely curious.

    • @XRTRACING

      Volume is volume. A smaller bowl would absolutely fill up quicker than a larger one. I think the end result it getting bowls that are all the same size. And basing your first measurements from there. Set line accordingly to not enough water or adequate water.
