  • "Clear cut with retention" is probably the most common silviculture prescription in British Columbia. I hope this video can demonstrate that even for clear-cut blocks, wildlife values are still being considered. Leave comments or critiques, as they are critical learning experiences for forestry students. Thank you

How does retaining some aspen help Mountain Caribou, northern goshawk and fisher?

I’m 1000% not competent to speak wholly for the industry. I’m also very interested in knowing more. The following are just some of the measures I’m aware some people are doing in the industry.
For caribou, I am not sure if leaving aspen trees would help Caribou due to the moose, caribou and wolf dynamics. Some of the measures the forestry is doing for caribou are:
      1. I know lichen assessment is required for blocks within UWRA. Retention is required if a certain amount of the lichen is found within the block. I think a minimal 40% of the lichen has to be retained.
      2. Roads have to be deactivated so wolves can’t travel on them post-harvest.
      3. I’ve heard they want big cut blocks (250ha+) for boreal caribou. I am curious about the reason behind that too.
      4. There are no harvest zones in UWRA too.
For Goshawk, I’m sorry, I’m not too sure either. I haven’t found one myself in the bush yet. Can’t speak too much about this one, but again, I wanted to know more about this.
For fishers, perhaps leaving CWD corridors in the block would help? I think there is a research project at John Prince Research Forest related to this one.
