We don't clear everything during clear cut
มุมมอง 1584 หลายเดือนก่อน
"Clear cut with retention" is probably the most common silviculture prescription in British Columbia. I hope this video can demonstrate that even for clear-cut blocks, wildlife values are still being considered. Leave comments or critiques, as they are critical learning experiences for forestry students. Thank you

So what are your thoughts on current forestry practices in BC? Regardless if you are a forester, forestry supervisor, forestry technician, logger, biologist, professor, trapper, indigenous people, or someone who has no forestry or biology background but you have something you want to say about BC forestry, or you wish the younger foresters should start doing or stop doing something. It doesn't ...

    Is the forest industry in B.C., for building homes or Is it being turned into biomass to give WEF Energy in UK?

    • @Hengda
      @Hengda 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question, I don’t have the answer, and I’m also wanting to know more. My understanding for is that B.C. forestry produce many many different products, from dimensional lumber to traditional pulp and paper to none timber forest products and many many many more. I think biomass is one of them.

      @@Hengda I've recently seen many videos about Drax Biomass. It's clear cutting whole forests the size of Vancouver. Taking whole logs, leaving the trimmings behind. They claimed to be cleaning up those very same trimmings, saying it's not cost effective. Turning our forests into wood pellets and slow burning them in UK Biomass Energy production. Claiming green energy, 100 years replacement for trees, better than coal. Satellite imagery of B.C. forests is... illuminating. Combined with the increased risk of forest fires...How will we build homes for young Canadian families? Could clear cutting have contributed to the 2021 B.C. flood, causing $17 billion? Rain ran off the hills as if a parking lot. (Atmospheric river)

    How does retaining some aspen help Mountain Caribou, northern goshawk and fisher?

    • @Hengda
      @Hengda 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m 1000% not competent to speak wholly for the industry. I’m also very interested in knowing more. The following are just some of the measures I’m aware some people are doing in the industry. For caribou, I am not sure if leaving aspen trees would help Caribou due to the moose, caribou and wolf dynamics. Some of the measures the forestry is doing for caribou are: 1. I know lichen assessment is required for blocks within UWRA. Retention is required if a certain amount of the lichen is found within the block. I think a minimal 40% of the lichen has to be retained. 2. Roads have to be deactivated so wolves can’t travel on them post-harvest. 3. I’ve heard they want big cut blocks (250ha+) for boreal caribou. I am curious about the reason behind that too. 4. There are no harvest zones in UWRA too. For Goshawk, I’m sorry, I’m not too sure either. I haven’t found one myself in the bush yet. Can’t speak too much about this one, but again, I wanted to know more about this. For fishers, perhaps leaving CWD corridors in the block would help? I think there is a research project at John Prince Research Forest related to this one.

    I just applied for a forestry technician aid job, entry level with the US forest service. Really hoping I get the job. Got a lot of experience with heavy equipment, mechanic skills etc. figure I would be a good fit. Looks like a such a great job. I'm really into botany, geology, general ecosystem health. Heck in my spare time I improve local trails and gardens, my own yard and surrounding nature. I can't think of a better job for me.
