    Nice job. That was a lot of work though. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from Motown.

      Thanks. It was a lot of work. I knew that I would be staring at it every time I drove the car so I wanted it to end up well. The red mustang in your thumbnail looks beautiful! Is it yours?

    I just finished installing my radio panel. Thanks for the motivation.

    Nice job, Doug. Another lesson we learn.... unless we are replacing an entire panel... when patching, only cut out what we absolutely need to cut out.... make patches as small as possible. I just watched a video on how to make door bottoms from scratch and the guy was amazing... the tiny little pieces he could cut, weld, and grind and make it look original.... Anyway, nice job.... looking forward to your next videos.

      I agree...what that a Fitzee video? I follow him. I love listening to him talk. Plus he's really good at what he does and is great at encouraging others to try it too. I think one of the main things that caused my hole to be too big was the fact that patch panel wasn't curved as much as the dash. I cut the hole, then realized the curve of the piece needed to be tighter which caused it to not fill up as much of the hole...I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching.

      @@3rdstallgarage - Yes... it WAS Fitzee Fabrications.... glad to know you follow Jo Daddy too. It's hard to keep them straight as I follow so many (trying to learn myself). Some of these guys are such artists... I couldn't believe how he got that door to look when he was done. Yeah.... keep plugging away at it... love to see the progress.

    Turned out looking very nice! Thanks for sharing the details, the "Tips and Tricks" so to speak, learning from other people's "opportunities" is always lease stressful. Here's something I found..... on small panels, if you size up the new panel then tack weld it on over the existing, then cut both panels at the same time and on a 45 degree angle. Only cut a few inches, one tack weld at a time. As you cut, tack weld the two pieces back together. Fitzee's does a great video on this technique, that's where I stole it. Great job and Great video, Thanks for sharing!

      I've watched that and it might have been a better approach on this task. I'll try that sometime.

    I had a 66 coupe that someone had done the similar thing to. I gave up on that car and ended up giving it away. It was a T code, so I didn’t think it was worth it. Knowing what I do now, I wish I kept it. I bought my 65 coupe which was in much better shape. Nice job on this. Now, look at custom auto sound for the vintage looking radio with modern features.

      It's easy to look back and second guess decisions. Thanks for the encouragement. Those vintage radios with modern features are pretty sweet. If there's room in the budget at the end, that's definitely on the wish list.

      It would’ve been easier and faster if you had cleaned it all up ground it down and used 3M Pannel bond adhesive .

    good advice, laying on my back welding never thought about sparks in my ears. Although I did crack my cell phone glass when a spark landed on it while recording. Also, I really have to get one of those mini belt sanders, looks good, they really did a hack job on your dash

      I have some spots on my phone from welding too! And I do like the mini belt sander. It gets in spots that other sanders can't reach well. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Doug, could it have been possible to have cut the patch panel to match the existing hole instead of doing a complete replacement? eventually I'll be in your shoes soon with my 66 convertible, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can and I thank you for your content

    • @3rdstallgarage
      @3rdstallgarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah...I wondered about that. It definitely could have been possible. And if it didn't work, you could easily buy another patch panel and try again with a larger hole. I wanted to use the whole panel because the curved edges helped me locate it. My previous owner had already welded over the mounting holes for the dash pad, so I wanted to bring those holes back. So you have a 66 vert too? Cool. What's it's story? Thanks for following along.

      @@3rdstallgarage I see your point on why you installed it. my story? lol years ago I bought what was a 1965 sprint mustang. It was a project car. I bought well over $5000 in parts. I sent it to the shop, they said it was too far gone, so I scrapped it. (if I knew then, what I know now, I would've saved it) so I held on to my parts hoping to one day come across another Mustang. so about 4.5 years ago I found a 66 convertible in miami, fl. I made the deal and picked it up. it's a project as well but, in better condition. problem is I have it stored in Florida but, I live in NY. like I said I have many parts for it. It's just a matter of time before I can start work on it. Only major parts missing is a wiring harness and a drivetrain.

    What type of mig welder are using?

    • @3rdstallgarage
      @3rdstallgarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a basic flux core Lincoln welder. Ideally I’d like to upgrade it to gas shield welding but this works just fine for now.

      I have an old Lincoln WeldPak 100. I bought it about 30 years ago.
