Hmmm, I personally haven't heard of anyone that had a safe for their valuables but if it makes you feel safer then you should get one. All the housing around there is for freshmen(North mountain and the red bricks) so most of the people passing by your room will be students(in case that makes you feel better). A lot of people I knew freshmen year typically did not lock the door to their room. So I guess make what you want of that info and do whatever feels right for your situation and belongings. :) Best of luck!
@@tejasvichalamcherla149 Thank you! I got a brand new laptop, so I'm mostly worried about keeping it safe. Do most students have their own laptops? They showed a picture of a bunch of stolen ones at the orientation.
You don't need to go to parties in order to make friends! There are many clubs and organizations you can join to get involved and make friends. There are lots of clubs that are catered to people in specific majors and clubs just for fun(ie hammock club or comedy club)! There is something called the "club showcase" that happens very early during fall quarter. This will be a good place for you to explore all the different options and find new ways to get involved. I hope that answered your question! :)
hey! just got accepted and i’m strongly considering going to slo. but being asian, i’ve been a bit worried about “fitting in” knowing that it’s a predominantly white university. i am from the bay area and i go to a school that’s literally
Hey! I understand where you are coming from. I came from a high school that had a large percentage of white students so cal poly was not as much of a culture shock for me compared to others. In my experience at cal poly, people were friendly and generally accepting. I did notice that sometimes in my computer science classes, that a large portion of the students were white males but I found a solid group of friends in computer science that made me feel more comfortable. In my experience, people were really nice and inviting. More often than not, I felt like I "fit in" and had people that made me feel at home there. In my time there, I noticed that Cal Poly's student body was becoming a bit more diverse each year. There are cultural organizations/clubs that you can join. I think that may help with the "culture shock" factor. You can see the list of current clubs here: clubs.calpoly.edu/clubs-directory. It was pretty easy to meet new people and make friends, especially freshman year because of the dorm environment and the fact that everyone is new helps build relationships. I will say that (unfortunately) people can potentially experience discrimination regardless of where they go to school and maybe the incidents you have heard of are isolated (it's hard for me to say). But I had lots of asian friends that found people they are comfortable with and built that sense of "community" with. Best of luck with your decision and congrats on getting accepted to poly!
Hi, here is the link for all the housing fees broken down: www.housing.calpoly.edu/student-housing/freshman-housing/freshman-student-housing-fees And here is the link for the dining fees broken down: www.calpolydining.com/diningprograms/freshman/paymentschedule/ It is kind of confusing what some of the room layouts might look like. And there is a certain of dining dollars that everyone student pays for. I can make a video explaining it all. Are there any specific questions that you'd like me to answer in the video?
Quick question: would you say the walk from NM to Santa Lucia is worth it? Is it difficult carrying laundry back and forth? Trying to make a decision between Santa Lucia and NM. thanks!
+Emily Hajj Hi, Santa Lucia is right next to North Mountain. The walk depends on which building you live in for North Mountain but it is no more than 4 minutes. And walking to Santa Lucia is way better than to the library or anywhere else on campus. There is a study lounge, small kitchen and game room in Santa Lucia that all nomo residents have access to.
Hi, it should be the same layout as the dorm shown in the video (assuming they haven't changed things since the video was filmed). So the advice given in the video should still apply. Hope that helps :) Hope your freshman year is a blast!
I love how you walk out of your room and you're already outside

Is partying big on campus? Do you have to go to parties in order to make friends, or are there other ways to get involved?

Do you know how many outlets are in the room? Would a surge protector+power strip be recommended?
Hi Nicole, I am not sure how many outlets there are in the room. But housing does provide each person with a power strip so no need to bring your own.
