The Pruitt-Igoe Myth tells the story of the transformation of the American city in the decades after World War II, through the lens of the infamous Pruitt-Igoe housing development and the St. Louis residents who called it home. It began as a housing marvel. Built in 1956, Pruitt-Igoe was heralded as the model public housing project of the future, "the poor man's penthouse." Two decades later, it ended in rubble - its razing an iconic event that the architectural theorist Charles Jencks famously called the death of modernism. The footage and images of its implosion have helped to perpetuate a myth of failure, a failure that has been used to critique Modernist architecture, attack public assistance programs, and stigmatize public housing residents. The Pruitt-Igoe Myth seeks to set the historical record straight. To examine the interests involved in Pruitt-Igoe's creation. To re-evaluate the rumors and the stigma. To implode the myth.

I just watched the documentary and the residents perspective is really poignant. But at the same time, they had to be really bad for them to be demolished in the early 1970s.

The same construction companies and architectural firms built buildings that are almost identical and the residents didn't turn them into slums. It's not architecture. The maintenance problems in these buildings were overwhelming because the tenants kept them so badly. There are all types of working class and poor people living in cheap housing in the US and their homes and pipes aren't breaking down. The cages that went up on public housing around the United States are there because the tenants themselves were throwing trash off the roofs and throwing appliances on police officers on the buildings. The elevators smelled like piss because tenants were pissing in them.

0:52... i beg to differ my good man. THAT experiment passed with flying color! ... but again, that would depend on what you believe the purpose of the experiment was.
Was it INTENTIONALLY created to tear apart the black family at its source. 1:32 ... what she describes at that time code... if we learned nothing from the years prior (segregation) we learned that if we had no one else, we had ourselves.
We can follow the chain of events after and see the exact same patterns all geared towards my initial assertion.
For people of color... this was devistating, for those responsible... this was NOT an economic failure or poor management, this went off better than planned. Again... listen to what she says at 1:32 and compare THAT to where we are today.

Once upon a time, St. Louis decided to stick their poor people into Pruitt-Igoe, a brandnew shiny place build by the future WTC architect Minoru Yamasaki and everything was fine, until drugdealers took over and turn it into Arkham City without a Batman, so they moved everyone out and blew it up.
